The behaviour of tributyl phosphate in an organic diluent

Competitive extraction of Li, Na, K, Mg and Ca ions from acidified aqueous solutions into chloroform layer containing diluted alkyl phosphates

Alkyl phosphates were extensively used in liquid-liquid extraction of lanthanides and actinides, but to a lesser extent for alkali and alkaline earth metals. The high amount of alkyl phosphate, which is usually used in the organic layer (>40 wt%), is not favoured due to its corrosive effect and toxicity. In the present work, diluted chloroform solutions (20.0 mM) of tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP), tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphates (TRIS) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (BIS) were investigated for their extraction of Li, Na, K, Mg and Ca ions. The extraction experiments were conducted on 7.0 M HNO₃ aqueous solutions containing 60.0 mM of metal ions in binary (Li⁺ and Mg²⁺), ternary (Li⁺, Na⁺ and K⁺) and quinary (Li⁺, Na⁺, K⁺, Mg²⁺ and Ca²⁺) mixtures. The Li⁺ selectivity over Mg²⁺ was very high in the binary system. Remarkably, increasing HNO₃ concentration in the aqueous layer had opposing effect on the extraction of Li⁺ (positive) and Mg²⁺ (negative). However, the selectivity for Li⁺ became less dramatic in the case of ternary and quinary system, though the selectivity varied with initial metal concentrations. The amounts of water and NO₃^- transferred into the organic layer demonstrated their synergistic effect on extracting metal ions. In the ternary and quinary systems, the total concentrations of metal ions in the organic layer (ranged from 49 to 85 mM) were higher than the concentration of ligand in the organic layer (20.0 mM), suggesting that metal ions may be extracted into water/ligand/NO₃^- aggregates in the organic layer. TBP, TRIS and BIS do not have significant difference in their extraction behaviour. The FTIR results indicated formation of P⁺-O^-M⁺/M²⁺ in the solid TBP/metal complex.

Deviations of dynamic parameters characterizing enthalpic and dielectric relaxations in glass forming alkyl phosphates

In our recent study [T. Wu et al., J. Chem. Phys. 147, 134501 (2017)], an alkyl phosphate glass former was studied and it suggested that the enthalpy relaxation involving the motions of all parts of the molecule is global, while the dielectric relaxation detects the local rotation of the polar core. In this work, we study a series of trialkyl phosphates using calorimetric and dielectric measurements over a wide temperature range. The results indicate a departure of the dielectric fragility indexes from the enthalpic ones as the length of the branch chain increases in the trialkyl phosphates. The Kirkwood correlation factor (g _k ) is found to coincide at ∼0.6 at glass transition temperature (T _g ) from triethyl phosphate to tributyl phosphate, indicating a similar structural alignment. The enthalpic relaxation serving as the more fundamental relaxation relevant to the structural relaxation is confirmed. Strikingly, we observed the relation of T _g to the chain length in alkyl phosphates, revealing a minimum T _g behavior, and its explanation assists in the understanding of the glass transition in relation to the structure of the glass-formers.

Molecular dynamics simulation for the test of calibrated OPLS-AA force field for binary liquid mixture of tri-iso-amyl phosphate and n-dodecane

Tri-isoamyl phosphate (TiAP) has been proposed to be an alternative for tri-butyl phosphate (TBP) in the Plutonium Uranium Extraction (PUREX) process. Recently, we have successfully calibrated and tested all-atom optimized potentials for liquid simulations using Mulliken partial charges for pure TiAP, TBP, and dodecane by performing molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. It is of immense importance to extend this potential for the various molecular properties of TiAP and TiAP/n-dodecane binary mixtures using MD simulation. Earlier, efforts were devoted to find out a suitable force field which can explain both structural and dynamical properties by empirical parameterization. Therefore, the present MD study reports the structural, dynamical, and thermodynamical properties with different mole fractions of TiAP-dodecane mixtures at the entire range of mole fraction of 0-1 employing our calibrated Mulliken embedded optimized potentials for liquid simulation (OPLS) force field. The calculated electric dipole moment of TiAP was seen to be almost unaffected by the TiAP concentration in the dodecane diluent. The calculated liquid densities of the TiAP-dodecane mixture are in good agreement with the experimental data. The mixture densities at different temperatures are also studied which was found to be reduced with temperature as expected. The plot of diffusivities for TiAP and dodecane against mole fraction in the binary mixture intersects at a composition in the range of 25%-30% of TiAP in dodecane, which is very much closer to the TBP/n-dodecane composition used in the PUREX process. The excess volume of mixing was found to be positive for the entire range of mole fraction and the excess enthalpy of mixing was shown to be endothermic for the TBP/n-dodecane mixture as well as TiAP/n-dodecane mixture as reported experimentally. The spatial pair correlation functions are evaluated between TiAP-TiAP and TiAP-dodecane molecules. Further, shear viscosity has been computed by performing the non-equilibrium molecular dynamics employing the periodic perturbation method. The calculated shear viscosity of the binary mixture is found to be in excellent agreement with the experimental values. The use of the newly calibrated OPLS force field embedding Mulliken charges is shown to be equally reliable in predicting the structural and dynamical properties for the mixture without incorporating any arbitrary scaling in the force field or Lennard-Jones parameters. Further, the present MD simulation results demonstrate that the Stokes-Einstein relation breaks down at the molecular level. The present methodology might be adopted to evaluate the liquid state properties of an aqueous-organic biphasic system, which is of great significance in the interfacial science and technology.

Determination of the Structures of Uranyl-Tri-n-butyl-Phosphate Aggregates by Coupling Experimental Results with Molecular Dynamic Simulations

The complex structure of a plutonium uranium refining by extraction (PUREX) process organic phase was characterized by combining results from experiments and molecular dynamics simulations. For the first time, the molecular interactions between tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) and the extracted solutes, as well as TBP aggregation after the extraction of water and/or uranyl nitrate, were described and analyzed concomitantly. Coupling molecular dynamics simulations with small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SWAXS) experiments can lead to simulated organic solutions that are representative of the experimental ones, even for high extractant and solute concentrations. Furthermore, this coupling is well adapted for the interpretation of SWAXS experiments without preliminary hypothesis on the size or shape of aggregates. The results link together previous literature studies obtained for each level of depiction separately (complexation or aggregation). Without uranium, or at low metal concentration, almost no aggregation was observed. At high uranium concentration, organic phases contain small [UO₂ (NO₃ )₂ (TBP)₂ ]_n polymetallic aggregates (with n=2 to 4), in which the 1:2 U/TBP stoichiometry is preserved.

A Molecular Dynamics Study of Tributyl Phosphate and Diamyl Amyl Phosphonate Self-Aggregation in Dodecane and Octane

A molecular dynamics model for tributyl phosphate (TBP) and diamyl amyl phosphonate (DAAP) is presented using the Generalized AMBER Force Field (GAFF) and the AM1-BCC method for calculated atomic charges with a modification to the phosphorus-containing dihedral parameters. The density and average molecular dipole in a neat liquid simulation, and dimerization in dodecane and octane diluents, compare favorably to experimental values. At low extractant concentration, investigation of the dimer structure reveals the offset "head-to-head" orientation as the predominant structure over a range of TBP and DAAP concentrations with a phosphoryl oxygen separation distance between dimerized extractants of 3-5.5 Å. At high extractant concentrations, a graph analysis of extractant aggregates was used to determine concentrations of each aggregate size and the average coordination number, which gives a measure of the linearity of the aggregates. For aggregates up to 7 extractant molecules, the mean free energy of association per molecule was found to be 0.55-0.59 and 0.72 kcal/mol for TBP and DAAP, respectively. In both diluents, TBP formed large aggregates more frequently than DAAP, and those aggregates were more nonlinear than their DAAP equivalents. This finding anticipates differences in aggregation chemistry between TBP and DAAP in PUREX extraction systems.
