Tuning ultrafast time-evolution of photo-induced charge-transfer states: A real-time electronic dynamics study in substituted indenotetracene derivatives

Photo-induced charge transfer (CT) states are pivotal in many technological and biological processes. A deeper knowledge of such states is mandatory for modeling the charge migration dynamics. Real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TD-DFT) electronic dynamics simulations are employed to explicitly observe the electronic density time-evolution upon photo-excitation. Asymmetrically substituted indenotetracene molecules, given their potential application as n-type semiconductors in organic photovoltaic materials, are here investigated. Effects of substituents with different electron-donating characters are analyzed in terms of the overall electronic energy spacing and resulting ultrafast CT dynamics through linear response (LR-)TD-DFT and RT-TD-DFT based approaches. The combination of the computational techniques here employed provided direct access to the electronic density reorganization in time and to its spatial and rational representation in terms of molecular orbital occupation time evolution. Such results can be exploited to design peculiar directional charge dynamics, crucial when photoactive materials are used for light-harvesting applications.

Thermally Activated Geometrical Regioselective E→Z Isomerization-Enabled Cascade Sequences of Conjugated Dienals: Experimental and DFT Studies

The geometrical regioselective E→Z isomerization of a conjugated alkene under thermal activation pose a challenge due to microscopic reversibility. Herein we report that such reversibility issues can be circumvented by integrating E→Z isomerization with subsequent cyclization cascade, particularly in the absence of commonly employed light, acids, or metal-catalysts. Thus, linearly conjugated dienals in a mixture of toluene-alcohol (2 : 1) solvents or only with alcohol at 60-70 °C can be converted to γ-alkoxybutenolides in moderate to good yields. The intermediary 2Z,4E-isomer can be isolated, which includes the first example of isolating the regioselective isomerization product under thermal conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) studies have been employed to shed light on the feasibility of geometrical alkene isomerization and ensuing cascade sequences. It has been observed that the regioselective 2E,4E→2Z,4E isomerization of dienal is a thermodynamically facile (ΔG <0) process. Structural elucidation further reveals that the presence of a certain charge transfer and a non-covalent interaction may be the primary reasons for the enhanced stability of the 2Z,4E-isomer. The thermodynamic plausibility of the subsequent cascade reaction from the Z-isomer to the anticipated product in the presence of a polar protic solvent (here MeOH) is also explicated. Out of the two probable pathways, the "hemiacetal pathway" involving a relay proton transfer is kinetically more feasible due to the diminished activation barrier than the "conjugate addition pathway".

Alkali metal decorated C60 fullerenes as promising materials for delivery of the 5-fluorouracil anticancer drug: a DFT approach

The development of effective drug delivery vehicles is essential for the targeted administration and/or controlled release of drugs. Using first-principles calculations, the potential of alkali metal (AM = Li, Na, and K) decorated C₆₀ fullerenes for delivery of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) is explored. The adsorption energies of the 5FU on a single AM atom decorated C₆₀ are −19.33, −16.58, and −14.07 kcal mol⁻¹ for AM = Li, Na, and K, respectively. The results, on the other hand, show that up to 12 Li and 6 Na or K atoms can be anchored on the exterior surface of the C₆₀ fullerene simultaneously, each of which can interact with a 5FU molecule. Because of the moderate adsorption energies and charge-transfer values, the 5FU can be simply separated from the fullerene at ambient temperature. Furthermore, the results show that the 5FU may be easily protonated in the target cancerous tissues, which facilitates the release of the drug from the fullerene. The inclusion of solvent effects tends to decrease the 5FU adsorption energies in all 5FU-fullerene complexes. This is the first report on the high capability of AM decorated fullerenes for delivery of multiple 5FU molecules utilizing a C₆₀ host molecule.

DFT calculations show the capability of alkali metal (AM = Li, Na, and K) decorated C60 fullerenes to deliver multiple 5-fluorouracil 5FU molecules. The results show 5FU may be protonated to target cancerous tissues, this causes the drug to be realised from the fullerene.

Reversible CO2 storage and efficient separation using Ca decorated porphyrin-like porous C24N24 fullerene: a DFT study

The search for novel materials for effective storage and separation of CO₂ molecules is a critical issue for eliminating or lowering this harmful greenhouse gas. In this paper, we investigate the potential application of a porphyrin-like porous fullerene (C₂₄N₂₄) as a promising material for CO₂ storage and separation using thorough density functional theory calculations. The results show that CO₂ is physisorbed on bare C₂₄N₂₄, implying that this material cannot be used for efficient CO₂ storage. Coating C₂₄N₂₄ with Ca atoms, on the other hand, can greatly improve the adsorption strength of CO₂ molecules due to polarization and charge-transfer effects. Furthermore, the average adsorption energy for each of the maximum 24 absorbed CO₂ molecules on the fully decorated Ca₆C₂₄N₂₄ fullerene is −0.40 eV, which fulfills the requirement needed for efficient CO₂ storage (−0.40 to −0.80 eV). The Ca coated C₂₄N₂₄ fullerene also have a strong potential for CO₂ separation from CO₂/H₂, CO₂/CH₄, and CO₂/N₂ mixtures.

Using dispersion-corrected DFT calculations, the potential application of a porphyrin-like porous fullerene (C₂₄N₂₄) as an efficient material for CO₂ storage and separation was investigated.

Efficient hydrogen storage on Al decorated C24N24: a DFT study

Hydrogen storage on Al-decorated C24N24 is explored by the dispersion corrected DFT calculations. Each Al site in the Al6C24N24 cluster can adsorb up to five H2 molecules, with an average adsorption energy of −0.30 eV.

Stability of Coinage Metals Interacting with C60

Buckminsterfullerene (C₆₀) has been advocated as a perfect candidate material for the encapsulation and adsorption of a variety of metals and the resultant metallofullerenes have been considered for the use in different scientific, technological and medical areas. Using spin-polarized density functional theory together with dispersion correction, we examine the stability and electronic structures of endohedral and exohedral complexes formed between coinage metals (Cu, Ag and Au) and both non-defective and defective C₆₀. Encapsulation is exoergic in both forms of C₆₀ and their encapsulation energies are almost the same. Exohedral adsorption of all three metals is stronger than that of endohedral encapsulation in the non-defective C₆₀. Structures and the stability of atoms interacting with an outer surface of a defective C₆₀ are also discussed. As the atoms are stable both inside and outside the C₆₀, the resultant complexes can be of interest in different scientific and medical fields. Furthermore, all complexes exhibit magnetic moments, inferring that they can be used as spintronic materials.
