A new equation of state for associating Lennard–Jones fluids with two sites: small bond angle

Role of site-site interaction on the phase equilibria of multiple-site associating fluids in a functionalized slit pore

Vapor-liquid phase equilibria for multiple sites associating fluids with different associating strengths are investigated in a slit pore using grand-canonical transition matrix Monte Carlo method. The increase of critical temperature from two-site to four-site associating fluids at constant site strength is quite significant as compared to that of the one-site to two-site associating fluids, which is more pronounced at higher associating strength (ϵ* = 6). Monomer fraction and cluster size distribution are used to investigate the association of fluid particles in coexistence phases. The monomer fraction for both phases decreases with increased associating sites on the fluid particles due to more site-site interaction with neighboring fluid particles and forming a larger cluster. Therefore, the number of associating sites and their distribution play a vital role in the association of fluid particles. Moreover, the saturation chemical potential changes with the arrangement of the sites. For two-site associating fluids, we observe early vapor-liquid transition when the sites are oppositely placed, and when the sites are placed at 90°, the vapor-liquid transition is observed at the higher chemical potential. Moreover, four-site associating fluids with a square arrangement show early vapor-liquid phase transition, mainly because these arrangements of sites effectively interact with surface sites and the molecules in the next layer.

Bond cooperativity and ring formation in hydrogen fluoride thermodynamic properties: A two-density formalism framework

In this work, we develop a thermodynamic perturbation theory using a two-density formalism framework to model the bond cooperativity effect for associating hard sphere and Lennard-Jones fluids. The theory predictions are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results and they are in excellent agreement. We incorporate bond angle dependent ring formation into the theory to calculate hydrogen fluoride thermodynamic properties. The liquid density and vapor pressure obtained by the theory are in good agreement with the experimental data. Comparing the thermo-physical properties of hydrogen fluoride calculated by this theory with previous studies reveals the importance of bond angle dependent ring formation and cooperative hydrogen bonding to capture its anomalous behavior especially in the vapor phase. The cooperativity ratio obtained in our model is close to the values reported by previous quantum studies.

A molecular equation of state for alcohols which includes steric hindrance in hydrogen bonding

In this paper, we develop the first equation of state for alcohol containing mixtures which includes the effect of steric hindrance between the two electron lone pair hydrogen bond acceptor sites on the alcohol's hydroxyl oxygen. The theory is derived for multi-component mixtures within Wertheim's multi-density statistical mechanics in a second order perturbation theory. The accuracy of the new approach is demonstrated by application to pure methanol and ethanol and binary ethanol/water mixtures. It is demonstrated that the new approach gives a substantial improvement in the prediction of the hydrogen bonding structure of both pure alcohol and alcohol/water mixtures, as compared to conventional approaches which do not include steric effects between the alcohol association sites. Finally, it is demonstrated that the inclusion of steric effects allows for more accurate binary phase equilibria and heats of mixing prediction with water.

Extension of the SAFT-VR Mie EoS To Model Homonuclear Rings and Its Parametrization Based on the Principle of Corresponding States

The statistical associating fluid theory of variable range employing a Mie potential (SAFT-VR-Mie) proposed by Lafitte et al. (J. Chem Phys. 2013, 139, 154504) is one of the latest versions of the SAFT family. This particular version has been shown to have a remarkable capability to connect experimental determinations, theoretical calculations, and molecular simulations results. However, the theoretical development restricts the model to chains of beads connected in a linear fashion. In this work, the capabilities of the SAFT-VR Mie equation of state for modeling phase equilibria are extended for the case of planar ring compounds. This modification proposed replaces the Helmholtz energy of chain formation by an empirical contribution based on a parallelism to the second-order thermodynamic perturbation theory for hard sphere trimers. The proposed expression is given in terms of an extra parameter, χ, that depends on the number of beads, m_s, and the geometry of the ring. The model is used to describe the phase equilibrium for planar ring compounds formed of Mie isotropic segments for the cases of m_s equals to 3, 4, 5 (two configurations), and 7 (two configurations). The resulting molecular model is further parametrized, invoking a corresponding states principle resulting in sets of parameters that can be used indistinctively in theoretical calculations or in molecular simulations without any further refinements. The extent and performance of the methodology has been exemplified by predicting the phase equilibria and vapor pressure curves for aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene, hexafluorobenzene, toluene), heterocyclic molecules (2,5-dimethylfuran, sulfolane, tetrahydro-2H-pyran, tetrahydrofuran), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, pyrene, anthracene, pentacene, and coronene). An important aspect of the theory is that the parameters of the model can be used directly in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate equilibrium phase properties and interfacial tensions with an accuracy that rivals other coarse grained and united atom models, for example, liquid densities, are predicted, with a maximum absolute average deviation of 3% from both the theory and the MD simulations, while the interfacial tension is predicted, with a maximum absolute average of 8%. The extension to mixtures is exemplified by considering a binary system of hexane (chain fluid) and tetrahydro-2H-pyran (ring fluid).

On the cooperativity of association and reference energy scales in thermodynamic perturbation theory

Equations of state for hydrogen bonding fluids are typically described by two energy scales. A short range highly directional hydrogen bonding energy scale as well as a reference energy scale which accounts for dispersion and orientationally averaged multi-pole attractions. These energy scales are always treated independently. In recent years, extensive first principles quantum mechanics calculations on small water clusters have shown that both hydrogen bond and reference energy scales depend on the number of incident hydrogen bonds of the water molecule. In this work, we propose a new methodology to couple the reference energy scale to the degree of hydrogen bonding in the fluid. We demonstrate the utility of the new approach by showing that it gives improved predictions of water-hydrocarbon mutual solubilities.
