Abstract
To expand the QUEST database of highly accurate vertical transition energies, we consider a series of large organic chromogens ubiquitous in dye chemistry, such as anthraquinone, azobenzene, BODIPY, and naphthalimide. We compute, at the CC3 level of theory, the singlet and triplet vertical transition energies associated with the low-lying excited states. This leads to a collection of more than 120 new highly accurate excitation energies. For several singlet transitions, we have been able to determine CCSDT transition energies with a compact basis set, finding minimal deviations from the CC3 values for most states. Subsequently, we employ these reference values to benchmark a series of lower-order wave function approaches, including the popular ADC(2) and CC2 schemes, as well as time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT), both with and without applying the Tamm-Dancoff approximation (TDA). At the TD-DFT level, we evaluate a large panel of global, range-separated, local, and double hybrid functionals. Additionally, we assess the performance of the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) formalism relying on both G0W0 and evGW quasiparticle energies evaluated from various starting points. It turns out that CC2 and ADC(2.5) are the most accurate models among those with respective O ( N 5 ) and O ( N 6 ) scalings with system size. In contrast, CCSD does not outperform CC2. The best performing exchange-correlation functionals include BMK, M06-2X, M06-SX, CAM-B3LYP, ωB97X-D, and LH20t, with average deviations of approximately 0.20 eV or slightly below. Errors on vertical excitation energies can be further reduced by considering double hybrids. Both SOS-ωB88PP86 and SOS-ωPBEPP86 exhibit particularly attractive performances with overall quality on par with CC2, whereas PBE0-DH and PBE-QIDH are only slightly less efficient. BSE/evGW calculations based on Kohn-Sham starting points have been found to be particularly effective for singlet transitions, but much less for their triplet counterparts.

Abstract
The present benchmark calculations testify to the validity of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) when exploring the low-lying excited states potential energy surfaces of models of phenylalanine protein chains. Among three functionals suitable for systems exhibiting charge-transfer excited states, LC-ωPBE, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97X-D, which were tested on a reference peptide system, we selected the ωB97X-D functional, which gave the best results compared to the approximate coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CC2) method. A quantitative agreement for both the geometrical parameters and the vibrational frequencies was obtained for the lowest singlet excited state (a ππ* state) of the series of capped peptides. In contrast, only a qualitative agreement was met for the corresponding adiabatic zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE)-corrected excitation energies. Two composite protocols combining CC2 and DFT/TD-DFT methods were then developed to improve these calculations. Both protocols substantially reduced the error compared to CC2 and experiment, and the best of both even led to results of CC2 quality at a lower cost, thus providing a reliable alternative to this method for very large systems.

Abstract
We present an effective computational protocol (cLR2) to describe both solvatochromism and fluorosolvatochromism. This protocol, which couples the polarizable continuum model to time-dependent density functional theory, simultaneously accounts for both linear-response and state-specific solvation effects. A series of test cases, including solvatochromic and fluorosolvatochromic compounds and excited-state intramolecular proton transfers, are used to highlight that cLR2 is especially beneficial for modeling bright excitations possessing a significant charge-transfer character, as well as cases in which an accurate balance between states of various polarities should be restored.

Abstract
We report an effective strategy for improving the electronic transport and switching behaviors of dimethyldihydropyrene/cyclophanediene (DHP/CPD)-based molecular devices, an intriguing photoswitch that can be triggered by ultraviolet/visible (UV-vis) light irradiation. Aiming to obtain molecular devices with high on-off ratios, we assess a series of molecular designs formed by [e]-fusing different arenes on a conjugated macrocycle to modulate the photochemical and electronic properties. Here, the switching mechanism and transport properties of [e]-fused DHP/CPD-based nanojunctions are theoretically investigated by first-principles calculations. As a result, the large diversity in electrical conductance between the closed and open forms certifies the substantial switching behavior observed in these sandwich structures. The maximum on-off ratios in all designed photoswitches are greater than 102. Further analysis confirms the improvement of switching performance caused by [e]-fusion. Notably, in the benzo-fused molecular junctions, the maximum on-off ratio is up to 103, which is 55 times larger than that of the un-fused one. We also find that the position of the switch core can remarkably affect the performance of photoswichable nanodevices.

Abstract
Ab initio calculation of electronic excitation energies with chemical accuracy (ca. 1 kcal·mol-1 or 0.043 eV with respect to experiment) is a long-standing challenge in electronic structure theory. Indeed, the most advanced theories can, in practice, only be used to estimate vertical transition energies that cannot be measured experimentally, whereas the calculation of 0-0 energies requires excited-state structures and vibrations for both the ground and excited states, which drastically restrains the number of applicable methods. In this Letter, we present a composite computational protocol able to deliver chemically accurate theoretical 0-0 energies, with a mean absolute deviation of 0.018 eV for a set of 35 singlet valence states. Such accuracy, achievable for the valence states of small- and medium-sized molecules only, allows pinpointing questionable experimental assignments with very high confidence and constitutes a step toward quantitative prediction of excited-state properties.
