Abstract
It is demonstrated that significant accuracy improvements in MRSF-TDDFT can be achieved by introducing two different exchange-correlation (XC) functionals for the reference Kohn-Sham DFT and the response part of the calculations, respectively. Accordingly, two new XC functionals of doubly tuned Coulomb attenuated method-vertical excitation energy (DTCAM-VEE) and DTCAM-AEE were developed on the basis of the "adaptive exact exchange (AEE)" concept in the framework of the Coulomb-attenuating XC functionals. The values by DTCAM-VEE are in excellent agreement with those of Thiel's set [mean absolute errors (MAEs) and the interquartile range (IQR) values of 0.218 and 0.327 eV, respectively]. On the other hand, DTCAM-AEE faithfully reproduced the qualitative aspects of conical intersections (CIs) of trans-butadiene and thymine and the nonadiabatic molecular dynamics (NAMD) simulations on thymine. The latter functional also remarkably exhibited the exact 1/R asymptotic behavior of the charge-transfer state of an ethylene-tetrafluoroethylene dimer and the accurate potential energy surfaces (PESs) along the two torsional angles of retinal protonated Schiff base model with six double bonds (rPSB6). Overall, DTCAM-AEE generally performs well, as its MAE (0.237) and IQR (0.41 eV) are much improved as compared to BH&HLYP. The current idea can also be applied to other XC functionals as well as other variants of linear response theories, opening a new way of developing XC functionals.

Abstract
We present an algorithm for evaluating analytic nuclear energy gradients of the state-averaged density matrix renormalization group complete-active-space self-consistent field (SA-DMRG-CASSCF) theory based on the newly derived coupled-perturbed (CP) DMRG-CASSCF equations. The Lagrangian for the conventional SA-CASSCF analytic gradient theory is extended to the SA-DMRG-CASSCF variant that can fully consider a whole set of constraints on the parameters of multi-root canonical matrix product states formed at all the DMRG block configurations. An efficient algorithm to solve the CP-DMRG-CASSCF equations for determining the multipliers was developed. The complexity of the resultant analytic gradient algorithm is overall the same as that of the unperturbed SA-DMRG-CASSCF algorithm. In addition, a reduced-scaling approach was developed to directly compute the SA reduced density matrices (SA-RDMs) and their perturbed ones without calculating separate state-specific RDMs. As part of our implementation scheme, we neglect the term associated with the constraint on the active orbitals in terms of the active-active rotation in the Lagrangian. Thus, errors from the true analytic gradients may be caused in this scheme. The proposed gradient algorithm was tested with the spin-adapted implementation by checking how accurately the computed analytic energy gradients reproduce numerical gradients of the SA-DMRG-CASSCF energies using a common number of renormalized bases. The illustrative applications show that the errors are sufficiently small when using a typical number of the renormalized bases, which is required to attain adequate accuracy in DMRG's total energies.

Abstract
This paper presents state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field in polarizable continuum model (PCM) for studies of photoreactions in solvents. The wavefunctions of the solute and the PCM surface charges of the solvent are optimized simultaneously such that the state-averaged free energy is variationally minimized. The method supports both fixed weights and dynamic weights where the weights are automatically adjusted based on the energy gaps. The corresponding analytical nuclear gradients and non-adiabatic couplings are also derived. Furthermore, we show how the new method can be entirely formulated in terms of seven basic operations, which allows the implementation to benefit from existing high-performance libraries on graphical processing units. Results demonstrating the accuracy and performance of the implementation are presented and discussed. We also apply the new method to the study of minimal conical intersection search and photoreaction energy pathways in solvents. Effects from the polarity of the solvents and different formulas of dynamic weights are compared and discussed.

Abstract
Cinnamate derivatives show a variety of photo-induced reactions. Among them is trans-cis photoisomerization, which may involve the nonradiative decay (NRD) process. The extended multistate complete active space second-order perturbation (XMS-CASPT2) method was used in this study as a suitable theory for treating multireference electronic nature, which was frequently manifested in the photoisomerization process. The minimum energy paths of the trans-cis photoisomerization process of cinnamate derivatives were determined, and the activation energies were estimated using the resulting intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) paths. Natural orbital analysis revealed that the transition state's (TS) electronic structure is zwitterionic-like, elucidating the solvent and substituent effect on the energy barrier of photoisomerization paths. Furthermore, it was found that the charge on the pyramidalized carbon atom at the TS structure was strongly correlated with the activation energy barrier for the cinnamate derivatives. Thus, it seemingly provided a physical picture of the photoisomerization of cinnamates and was a good descriptor potentially applicable to molecular design for controlling the rate constant of the photoisomerization reaction.

Abstract
Global switching trajectory surface hopping molecular dynamics simulations are performed using accurate on-the-fly (TD)CAM-B3LYP/6-31G potential energy surfaces to study retinal protonated Schiff-base photoisomerization up to S1 excitation. The simulations detected two-layer conical intersection networks: one is at an energy as high as 8 eV and the other is in the energy range around 3-4 eV. Six conical intersections within the low-layer energy region that correspond to active conical intersections under experimental conditions are found via the use of pairwise isomers, within which nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations are performed. Eight isomer products are populated with simulated sampling trajectories from which the simulated quantum yield in the gas phase is estimated to be 0.11 (0.08) moving from the all-trans isomer to the 11-cis (11-cis to all-trans) isomer in comparison with an experimental value of 0.09 (0.2) in the solution phase. Each conical intersection is related to one specific twist angle accompanying a related CC double bond motion during photoisomerization. Nonplanar distortion of the entire dynamic process has a significant role in the formation of the relevant photoisomerization products. The present simulation indicates that all hopping points show well-behaved potential energy surface topology, as calculated via the conventional TDDFT method, at conical intersections between S1 and S0 states. Therefore, the present nonadiabatic dynamics simulations with the TDDFT method are very encouraging for simulating various large systems related to retinal Schiff-base photoisomerization in the real world.

Abstract
We present the formulation and implementation of an analytical gradient algorithm for extended multiconfiguration quasidegenerate perturbation theory (XMCQDPT2) with the resolvent-fitting approximation by Granovsky. This algorithm is powerful when optimizing molecular configurations with a moderate-sized active space and many electronic states. First, we present the powerfulness and accuracy of resolvent-fitting approximations compared to canonical XMCQDPT2 theory. Then, we demonstrate the utility of the current algorithm in frequency analyses, optimizing the minimum energy conical intersection geometries of the retinal chromophore model RPSB6 and evaluating nuclear gradients when there are many electronic states. Furthermore, we parallelize the algorithm using the OpenMP/MPI hybrid approach. Additionally, we report the computational cost and parallel efficiency of the program.

Abstract

The compound 9-cis-retinyl acetate (9-cis-RAc) is a precursor
to 9-cis-retinal,
which has potential application in the treatment of some hereditary
diseases of the retina. An attractive synthetic route to 9-cis-RAc is based on the photoisomerization reaction of the
readily available all-trans-RAc. In the present study,
we examine the mechanism of the photoisomerization reaction with the
use of state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations for two
polyenic model compounds: tEtEt-octatetraene and tEtEtEc-2,6-dimethyl-1,3,5,7,9-decapentaene. The occurrence
of photoisomerization is attributed to a chain-kinking mechanism,
whereby a series of S1/S0 conical intersections
associated with kinking deformations at different positions along
the polyenic chain mediate internal conversion to the S0 state, and subsequent isomerization around one of the double bonds.
Two other possible photoisomerization mechanisms are taken into account,
but they are rejected as incompatible with simulation results and/or
the available spectroscopic data.

Abstract
Density fitting reduces the computational cost of both energy and gradient calculations by avoiding the computation and manipulation of four-index electron repulsion integrals. With this algorithm, one can efficiently optimize the geometries of large systems with an accurate multireference treatment. Here, we present the derivation of multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory for energies and analytic gradients with density fitting. Six systems are studied, and the results are compared to those obtained with no approximation to the electron repulsion integrals and to the results obtained by complete active space second-order perturbation theory. With the new approach, there is an increase in the speed of computation with a negligible loss in accuracy. Smaller grid sizes have also been used to reduce the computational cost of multiconfiguration pair-density functional theory with little effect on the optimized geometries and gradient values.

Abstract
Analytical gradient theory for the second-order extended multiconfiguration quasi-degenerate perturbation theory (XMCQDPT2), which can be regarded as the multistate version of the multireference second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (MRMP2), is formulated and implemented. The theory is similar to the previous analytical gradient theory for MCQDPT2, but we take into account the intruder state avoidance (ISA) technique and the "extension" of the MCQDPT2 theory by Granovsky. Although the (X)MCQDPT2 theory is not invariant with respect to rotations among the active orbitals, the resulting analytical gradients are accurate. We demonstrate the utility of the current algorithm in optimizing the minimum energy conical intersections (MECIs) of ethylene, butadiene, benzene, the retinal model chromophore PSB3, and the green fluorescent protein model chromophore pHBI. The XMCQDPT2 MECIs are very similar to the XMS-CASPT2 MECIs in terms of molecular conformation and the computed energies. We also discuss possible improvements of the current algorithm.

Abstract
Multireference electron correlation methods describe static and dynamical electron correlation in a balanced way and, therefore, can yield accurate and predictive results even when single-reference methods or multiconfigurational self-consistent field theory fails. One of their most prominent applications in quantum chemistry is the exploration of potential energy surfaces. This includes the optimization of molecular geometries, such as equilibrium geometries and conical intersections and on-the-fly photodynamics simulations, both of which depend heavily on the ability of the method to properly explore the potential energy surface. Because such applications require nuclear gradients and derivative couplings, the availability of analytical nuclear gradients greatly enhances the scope of quantum chemical methods. This review focuses on the developments and advances made in the past two decades. A detailed account of the analytical nuclear gradient and derivative coupling theories is presented. Emphasis is given to the software infrastructure that allows one to make use of these methods. Notable applications of multireference electron correlation methods to chemistry, including geometry optimizations and on-the-fly dynamics, are summarized at the end followed by a discussion of future prospects.
