Spin-orbit interaction in molecular photoelectron spectra An intermediate coupling approach

Electronic state spectroscopy of diiodomethane (CH₂I₂): experimental and computational studies in the 30,000-95,000 cm⁻¹ region

The electronic absorption spectrum of diiodomethane in the 30,000-95,000 cm(-1) region is investigated using synchrotron radiation; the spectrum in the 50,000-66,500 cm(-1) region is reported for the first time. The absorption bands in the 30,000-50,000 cm(-1) region are attributed to valence transitions, while the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectrum (50,000-95,000 cm(-1)) is dominated by several Rydberg series converging to the first four ionization potentials of CH2I2 at 9.46, 9.76, 10.21, and 10.56 eV corresponding to the removal of an electron from the outermost 3b2, 2b1, 1a2, and 4a1 non-bonding orbitals, respectively. Rydberg series of ns, np, and nd type converging to each of the four ionization potentials are assigned based on a quantum defect analysis. Time dependent density functional theory calculations of excited states support the analysis and help in interpretation of the Rydberg and valence nature of observed transitions. Density functional theory calculations of the neutral and ionic ground state geometries and vibrational frequencies are used to assign the observed vibronic structure. Vibronic features accompanying the Rydberg series are mainly due to excitation of the C-I symmetric stretch (ν3) and CH2 wag (ν8) modes, with smaller contributions from the C-H symmetric stretch (ν1). UV absorption bands are assigned to low lying valence states 1(1)B2, 1(1)B1, 2(1)A1, 3(1)A1, 2(1)B1, and 2(1)B2 and the unusually high underlying intensity in parts of the VUV spectrum is attributed to valence states with high oscillator strength. This is the first report of a comprehensive Rydberg series and vibronic analysis of the VUV absorption spectrum of CH2I2 in the 50,000-85,000 cm(-1) region. The VUV absorption spectrum of CD2I2 which serves to verify and consolidate spectral assignments is also reported here for the first time.

Spin-orbit and vibronic coupling in the ionic ground state of iodoacetylene from a rotationally resolved photoelectron spectrum

The X(+ 2)Π ← X (1)Σ(+) photoionizing transition of iodoacetylene (HC2I) has been investigated by pulsed-field-ionization zero-kinetic-energy (PFI-ZEKE) photoelectron spectroscopy. The resolution of the rotational structure of the spectra and its analysis provided information on the structure of the HC2I(+) cation and the photoionization dynamics of HC2I. In the ground electronic (2)Π state, the HC2I(+) cation is found to be linear and subject to a strong spin-orbit coupling. The first adiabatic ionization energy of HC2I and the spin-orbit splitting of the X(+ 2)Π ground state of HC2I(+) were determined to be EI(HC2I)/hc = 78296.5(2) cm(-1) and Δν̃SO = 3257(1) cm(-1), respectively. The large spin-orbit interaction almost entirely masks the Renner-Teller effect, which is only detectable through the observation of the nominally forbidden transition to the first excited level (5(1)) of the HCC-I bending mode ν5. The interaction of ∼2 cm(-1) observed between the 5(1) levels of (2)Σ1/2 and (2)Δ5/2 symmetry is attributed to a vibronic interaction with the B (2)Σ(+) electronic state of HC2I(+). The spin-orbit energy level structure of tri- and tetra-atomic molecules subject to the Renner-Teller effect and spin-orbit coupling is discussed for the two limiting cases where the spin-orbit-coupling constant is much smaller and much larger than the bending-mode frequencies.

Collision-energy-resolved Penning ionization electron spectroscopy of bromomethanes (CH3Br, CH2Br2, and CHBr3) by collision with He*(23S) metastable atoms

Ionization of bromomethanes (CH3Br, CH2Br2, and CHBr3) upon collision with metastable He*(2(3)S) atoms has been studied by means of collision-energy-resolved Penning ionization electron spectroscopy. Lone-pair (nBr) orbitals of Br4p characters have larger ionization cross sections than sigma(C-Br) orbitals. The collision-energy dependence of the partial ionization cross sections shows that the interaction potential between the molecule and the He*(2(3)S) atom is highly anisotropic around CH3Br or CH2Br2, while isotropic attractive interactions are found for CHBr3. Bands observed at electron energies of approximately 2 eV in the He*(2(3)S) Penning ionization electron spectra (PIES) of CH2Br2 and CHBr3 have no counterpart in ultraviolet (He I) photoionization spectra and theoretical (third-order algebraic diagrammatic construction) one-electron and shake-up ionization spectra. Energy analysis of the processes involved demonstrates that these bands and further bands overlapping with sigma(C-Br) or piCH2 levels are related to autoionization of dissociating (He+ - Br-) pairs. Similarly, a band at an electron energy of approximately 1 eV in the He*(2(3)S) PIES spectra of CH3Br has been ascribed to autoionizing Br** atoms released by dissociation of (unidentified) excited states of the target molecule. A further autoionization (S) band can be discerned at approximately 1 eV below the lone-pair nBr bands in the He*(2(3)S) PIES spectrum of CHBr3. This band has been ascribed to the decay of autoionizing Rydberg states of the target molecule (M**) into vibrationally excited states of the molecular ion. It was found that for this transition, the interaction potential that prevails in the entrance channel is merely attractive.
