Accurate diatomics-in-molecules calculations on Ar+n clusters

A density-matrix adaptation of the Hückel method to weak covalent networks

The coupled-monomers model is built as an adaptation of the Hückel MO theory based on a self-consistent density-matrix formalism. The distinguishing feature of the model is its reliance on variable bond and Coulomb integrals that depend on the elements of the density matrix: the bond orders and partial charges, respectively. Here the model is used to describe electron reactivity in weak covalent networks Xn±, where X is a closed-shell monomer. Viewing the electron as the simplest chemical reagent, the model provides insight into charge sharing and localisation in chains of such identical monomers. Data-driven modelling improves the results by training the model to experimental or ab initio data. Among key outcomes is the prediction that the charge in Xn± clusters tends to localise on a few (2-3) monomers. This is confirmed by the properties of several known cluster families, including Hen+, Arn+, (glyoxal)n-, and (biacetyl)n-. Since this prediction is obtained in a purely coherent covalent regime without any thermal excitation, it implies that charge localisation does not require non-covalent perturbations (such as solvation), decoherence, or free-energy effects. Instead, charge localisation is an intrinsic feature of weak covalent networks arising from their geometry relaxation and is ultimately attributed to the correlation between covalent bond orders and equilibrium bond integrals.

Photodissociation of medium-sized argon cluster cations in the visible region

Semiclassical methods for non-adiabatic dynamics simulations, based on a semiempirical diatomics-in-molecules model of intracluster interactions and the mean-field dynamical approach with the inclusion of quantum decoherence, have been used to study the photodissociation of argon cluster cations, Ar_N⁺ (N = 6–19), at E_phot = 2.35 eV.

Photoabsorption spectrum of helium trimer cation--theoretical modeling

The photoabsorption spectrum of He3(+) is calculated for two semiempirical models of intracluster interactions and compared with available experimental data reported in the middle UV range [H. Haberland and B. von Issendorff, J. Chem. Phys. 102, 8773 (1995)]. Nuclear delocalization effects are investigated via several approaches comprising quantum samplings using either exact or approximate (harmonic) nuclear wavefunctions, as well as classical samplings based on the Monte Carlo methodology. Good agreement with the experiment is achieved for the model by Knowles et al., [Mol. Phys. 85, 243 (1995); Mol. Phys. 87, 827 (1996)] whereas the model by Calvo et al., [J. Chem. Phys. 135, 124308 (2011)] exhibits non-negligible deviations from the experiment. Predictions of far UV absorption spectrum of He3(+), for which no experimental data are presently available, are reported for both models and compared to each other as well as to the photoabsorption spectrum of He2(+). A simple semiempirical point-charge approximation for calculating transition probabilities is shown to perform well for He3(+).

Theoretical modeling of ionization energies of argon clusters: nuclear delocalization effects

Temperature dependence of vertical ionization energies is modeled for small argon clusters (N ≤ 13) using classical parallel-tempering Monte Carlo methods and extended interaction models based on the diatomics-in-molecules approach. Quantum effects at the zero temperature are also discussed in terms of zero-point nuclear vibrations, either at the harmonic approximation level or at the fully anharmonic level using the diffusion Monte Carlo calculations. Both approaches lead to a considerable improvement of the theoretical predictions of argon clusters ionization energies and represent a realistic way of modeling of ionization energies for weakly bound and floppy complexes in general. A thorough comparison with a recent electron-impact experiment [O. Echt et al., J. Chem. Phys. 123, 084313 (2005)] is presented and a novel interpretation of the experimental data is proposed.

Mechanisms and dynamics of the metastable decay in Ar2+

A detailed experimental as well as theoretical investigation of the properties of the metastable dissociation Ar2+ --> Ar+ + Ar is presented. The mass-analyzed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) scan technique has been performed using a three sector field mass spectrometer. The possible mechanisms of the metastability of Ar2+ have been examined and the observed decay process is assigned to the II(1/2)(u)-->I(1/2)(g) bound to continuum radiative transition, in agreement with earlier work. The calculation of the theoretical shape of the kinetic energy release distribution of fragment ions allowed us to construct the theoretical MIKE peak and compare it with the raw experimental data. The accuracy of various sets of potential energy curves for Ar2+ is discussed, as well as the way of production of the metastable Ar2+[II(1/2)(u)] electronic state by electron impact. Excellent agreement between the experimental data and theoretical model has been observed.

Fragmentation dynamics of argon clusters (Arn, n=2 to 11) following electron-impact ionization: Modeling and comparison with experiment

The fragmentation dynamics of argon clusters ionized by electron impact is investigated for initial cluster sizes up to n = 11 atoms. The dynamics of the argon atoms is modeled using a mixed quantum-classical method in which the nuclei are treated classically and the transitions between electronic states quantum mechanically. The potential-energy surfaces are derived from a diatomics-in-molecules model with the addition of the induced dipole-induced dipole and spin-orbit interactions. The results show extensive and fast fragmentation. The dimer is the most abundant ionic fragment, with a proportion increasing from 66% for n = 2 to a maximum of 95% for n = 6 and then decreasing down to 67% for n = 11. The next abundant fragment is the monomer for n < 7 and the trimer otherwise. The parent ion dissociation lifetimes are all in the range of 1 ps. Long-lived trajectories appear for initial cluster sizes of seven and higher, and favor the formation of the larger fragments (trimers and tetramers). Our results show quantitative agreement with available experimental results concerning the extensive character of the fragmentation: Ar+ and Ar2(+) are the only ionic fragments for sizes up to five atoms; their overall proportion is in quantitative agreement for all the studied sizes; Ar2(+) is the main fragment for all sizes; stable Ar3(+) fragments only appear for n > or = 5, and their proportion increases smoothly with cluster size from there. However, the individual ionic monomer and dimer fragment proportions differ. The experimental ones exhibit oscillations with initial cluster size, with a slight tendency to decrease on average for the monomer. In contrast our results show a monotonic, systematic evolution, similar to what was found in our earlier studies on neon and krypton clusters. Several hypotheses are discussed in order to find the origin of this discrepancy. Finally, the metastable II(1/2)u and II(1/2)g states of Ar2(+) are found to decay with a lifetime of 3.5 and 0.1 ps, respectively, due to spin-orbit coupling. The difference with the commonly accepted microsecond range value for rare-gas dimer ions could originate from the role of autoionizing states in the formation of the parent ions.
