Molecular dynamics simulations of liquid crystal phases using atomistic potentials

Hysteresis Elimination for an Anisotropic Liquid-Crystal Model via Molecule Design and Replica-Exchange Optimization

The phenomenon of hysteresis in simulations, in which a system's current state is correlated to previous states and inhibits the transition to a more stable phase, may often lead to misleading results in physical chemistry. In this study, in addition to the replica exchange method (REM), a novel approach was taken by combining an evolution strategy based on the evolutionary principles of nature to predict phase transitions for the Hess-Su liquid-crystal model. In this model, an anisotropy term is added to the simple 6-12 Lennard-Jones model to intuitively reproduce the behavior of liquid crystals. We first applied the pressure-temperature REM to the Hess-Su model and optimized the replica spacing for the energy distribution to gain the maximum advantage from the REM. We then used the same approach as for the Hamiltonian REM, seeking to optimize the replica spacing in the same way. Based on both results, we attempted to predict this coarse-grained liquid-crystal model's exact phase transition point. In the Hamiltonian REM, replicas were prepared with different molecular aspect ratios corresponding to the values of the anisotropy terms in the potential function. The Hess-Su liquid-crystal model, which undergoes a direct transition from the nematic to the solid phase without going through a smectic phase, is a challenging research target for understanding phase transitions. Despite the tremendous computational difficulty in overcoming the strong hysteresis present in this system, our method could predict the phase transition point clearly and significantly reduce the extent of hysteresis. Our approach is beneficial when simulating more complex systems and, above all, shows great potential for more accurate and efficient phase transition predictions in the field of molecular simulation in the future.

Modelling charge transport in organic semiconductors: from quantum dynamics to soft matter

The charge carrier dynamics in organic semiconductors has been traditionally discussed with the models used in inorganic crystalline and amorphous solids but this analogy has severe limitations because of the more complicated role of nuclear motions in organic materials. In this perspective, we discuss how a new approach to the modelling of charge transport is emerging from the alliance between the conventional quantum chemical methods and the methods more traditionally used in soft-matter modelling. After describing the conventional limit cases of charge transport we discuss the problems arising from the comparison of the theory with the experimental and computational results. Several recent applications of numerical methods based on the propagation of the wavefunction or kinetic Monte Carlo methods on soft semiconducting materials are reviewed.

Atomistic simulations of a thermotropic biaxial liquid crystal

We have performed molecular dynamics simulations of a 2,5-bis-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole mesogen (ODBP-Ph-C(7)) at a fully atomistic level for a range of temperatures within the region that has experimentally been assigned to a biaxial nematic phase. Analysis of the data shows that the simulated nematic phase is biaxial but that the degree of biaxiality is small. The simulations show also the formation of ferroelectric domains in the nematic where the molecular short axis is aligned with the oxadiazole dipoles parallel to each other. Removal of electrostatic interactions leads to destabilization of ferroelectric domains and destabilization of the biaxiality. An additional simulation shows the slow growth of a mesophase directly from the isotropic fluid over a period of approximately 50 ns. This is the first time this has been achieved within the framework of an all-atom model.

Dispersion of the ordinary refractive indices of smectic liquid crystals in free standing films

The ordinary refractive indices of some smectic-A liquid crystals have been measured by means of interference spectra of free standing films as a function of wavelength and temperature. Numerical data are presented for further use. In the Sm-C phase one of the principal indices can be measured. If the three principal indices in the Sm-C phase would be known the tilt angle could be measured by means of the interference technique with high precision. Predictions of the refractive index of liquid crystals based on quantum chemical calculations of polarizabilities are presented. Using an expression derived by de Jeu and Bordewijk [J. Chem. Phys. 68, 109 (1978)] values for the principal refractive indices have been calculated that can be compared with our experimental results.

Atomistic simulation of a model liquid crystal

We present atomistic molecular dynamics computer simulations of the bulk phases of a model liquid crystal system based on 8CB. The model differs from real 8CB because it employs a united-atom description to eliminate all hydrogen atoms, and neglects all long-range electrostatic interactions. Despite this simplification, the pressure-temperature phase diagram shows an order-disorder transition, in which isotropic, smectic, and nematiclike behaviors are observed. A detailed analysis of the inter- and intramolecular structures of the ordered phases is given, together with an examination of finite size effects and the equilibration times of the system. It is shown that, whereas a system may appear to be thermodynamically and mechanically equilibrated after a period of 10-15 ns, it is possible for an imprint of the starting configuration to persist for much longer time scales. In the present case, however, such an imprint does not appear to affect the observed phase behavior.

Molecular dynamics simulations of side chain liquid crystal polymer molecules in isotropic and liquid-crystalline melts

A detailed molecular dynamics simulation study is described for a polysiloxane side chain liquid crystal polymer (SCLCP). The simulations use a coarse-grained model composed of a combination of isotropic and anisotropic interaction sites. On cooling from a fully isotropic polymer melt, we see spontaneous microphase separation into polymer-rich and mesogen-rich regions. Upon application of a small aligning potential during cooling, the structures that form on microphase separation anneal to produce a smectic-A phase in which the polymer backbone is largely confined between the smectic layers. Several independent quenches from the melt are described that vary in the strength of the aligning potential and the degree of cooling. In each quench, defects were found where the backbone chains hop from one backbone-rich region to the next by tunneling through the mesogenic layers. As expected, the number of such defects is found to depend strongly on the rate of cooling. In the vicinity of such a defect, the smectic-A structure of the mesogen-rich layers is disrupted to give nematiclike ordering. Additionally, several extensive annealing runs of approximately 40 ns duration have been carried out at the point of microphase separation. During annealing the polymer backbone is seen to be slowly excluded from the mesogenic layers and lie perpendicular to the smectic-A director. These observations agree with previous assumptions about the structure of a SCLCP and with interpretations of x-ray diffraction and small angle neutron scattering data. The flexible alkyl spacers, which link the backbone to the mesogens, are found to form sublayers around the backbone layer.
