Power and spirituality in polio survivors: a study based on Rogers' science

Rogers' model was used to study patterns of power and spirituality in polio survivors (n = 172) and people who have not had polio (n = 80). Participants completed the Power as Knowing Participation in Change Test and the Spiritual Orientation Inventory. Power was positively related to spirituality (r = .34, p < .005). Polio survivors manifested the same power (t = .44, df = 250, p = .33) and greater spirituality than people who had not experienced polio (t = 3.79, df = 250, p < .001), indicating that patterns of human field change are related to surviving polio. Recommendations include replicating this study with other populations and continuing to develop a theory of spirituality within Rogers' framework.

Energy conservation, occupational therapy, and the treatment of post-polio sequelae

Individuals experiencing post-polio sequelae (PPS) are usually advised to make significant lifestyle changes to lessen symptoms and prevent further decline in function. These individuals have spent most of their lives equating success with over-achievement and find it difficult to implement such recommendations. As specialists in energy conservation and work simplification, occupational therapyists increasingly are being called on to evaluate and treat these patients. Over the past 2 years, an occupational therapy educational program has been developed to educate patients about their condition and about ways to implement lifestyle changes while preserving the ability to do valued activities. This article describes the components of a thorough occupational therapy evaluation and the design and functional outcomes of a successful occupational therapy educational program to treat PPS.

Postpolio syndrome

The recurrence of symptoms many years after the rehabilitation of individuals who survived the acute illness, poliomyelitis, is a major concern. The purpose of this article is to provide information to the nurse practitioner (NP), who, as a primary health care provider, may be the first health professional to encounter persons with such complaints. Although no cure has been identified, diagnosis and treatment is available and is important to the psychosocial well-being of those who suffer from postpolio syndrome. This article reviews research on the syndrome including etiology, pathophysiology, symptoms and management, psychological issues, and the role of the aging process. Some areas where further research is indicated are also identified.
