Benign Spindle Cell Lesion of the Nasal Cavity: A Rare Presentation of Solitary Fibrous Tumor

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare neoplasms primarily found in the pleural region but have been documented in diverse extrapleural sites, including the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, albeit infrequently. Here, we present a case of a 48-year-old female who presented with a right-sided nasal mass and associated ophthalmologic symptoms, ultimately diagnosed with a benign spindle cell lesion localized to the nasal cavity. The patient underwent a comprehensive evaluation involving clinical examination, radiological imaging, and histopathological analysis, leading to the identification of a benign solitary fibrous tumor. Notably, diagnosing SFTs in the nasal cavity presents challenges due to their nonspecific clinical and imaging features, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach for accurate diagnosis and optimal management. Surgical excision, preferably via endoscopic techniques, remains the cornerstone of treatment based on tumor characteristics and extent. This case underscores the importance of recognizing uncommon presentations of sinonasal lesions, navigating diagnostic complexities, and emphasizing the critical role of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving favorable treatment outcomes for patients with such nasal cavity tumors.

A Large Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses Involving the Anterior Frontal Fossa: A Case Report and Review of the Literature

The Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm that arises mainly from the pleura. The sinonasal tract is generally not affected by SFT, and less than 100 cases have been reported in the English literature to date. We report an extremely rare SFT of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses extending into the anterior frontal fossa through the floor of the anterior skull base. To our knowledge, this case is the fourth SFT of the sinonasal tract involving the anterior frontal fossa in the world. Meanwhile, the tumor, measuring 13 × 6 cm in images, is the largest SFT of the sinonasal tract compared to previously reported cases. Three surgical procedures, including a transcranial one, were performed for the patient to achieve complete removal of the tumor. The diagnosis of SFT was established primarily by immunohistochemical positivity for CD34, STAT6, and negativity for S-100 protein. We emphasize the possibility of recurrence in SFT, and close follow-up is necessary with the help of nasal endoscopy and imaging approaches.

Rare Case of Solitary Nasal Fibrous Tumor Eroding Skull-Base

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a spindle cell lesion, classified under mesothelial tumors. Involvement of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx is rare. We present an extremely rare case of SFT of nasal origin eroding the anterior skull base. Complete local excision is the treatment of choice in the head and neck SFT, and we successfully excised the tumor by endoscopic approach only. The patient followed an uneventful course without any evidence of recurrence on 8-months follow-up.

Endoscopic resection of solitary fibrous tumor of the ethmoid: Case report review of the literature

INTRODUCTION

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT), as are benign neoplasms of fibroblastic cells. Nasosinusal localisation is exremely rare, difficult to diagnose and to manage.

CASE REPORT

We report a rare case of Solitary fibrous tumour in the nasal cavity in a 47-year-old- woman, with complete surgical resection.

DISCUSSION

SFTs are of mesenchymal origin, mainly from serous membranes. The head and neck region is affected with a percentage ranging from 5 to 27%. On the other hand, LTS unusually affects the nasal tract (NTS). Because of this rarity and its variable morphological appearance, it is difficult to distinguish TNS from other mesenchymal lesions.

CONCLUSION

Although there are no standard clinical guidelines, the preferred treatment for FLS is radical surgical resection.

Sinonasal Tract Solitary Fibrous Tumor: A Clinicopathologic Study of Six Cases with a Comprehensive Review of the Literature

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are well recognized in the head and neck region, but rarely arise in the sinonasal tract (SNT). Six primary SNT SFTs were identified in the files of Southern California Permanente Medical Group between 2006 and 2017. The patients included five males and one female ranging in age from 33 to 72 years (mean 52 years), most of whom presented clinically with nasal obstruction. Three tumors involved the nasal cavity alone, one involved the paranasal sinuses, and two involved both the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Histologically, the tumors were characterized by a variably cellular proliferation of cytologically bland spindle cells within a collagenous stroma with prominent interspersed branching vessels. Mitotic activity was low (range 0-2 per 10 high power fields) and there was no evidence of pleomorphism or tumor necrosis. Surface ulceration was noted. By immunohistochemistry, the lesional cells were positive for CD34, STAT6 and bcl-2. Clinical follow up information was available for all patients (range 32-102 months; mean 72 months). There were no recurrences or metastases and all were alive with no evidence of disease at last follow-up. SFTs rarely affect the SNT, but should be considered in the differential diagnosis of SNT mesenchymal lesions. Immunohistochemical expression of STAT6 can aid in diagnosis and separation of SFT from other spindle cell lesions occurring at this anatomic site. In combination with cases reported in the literature, primary SNT SFT behave in an indolent manner with conservative treatment.

Endoscopic-modified medial maxillectomy and its limitation for a solitary fibrous tumor of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises from the pleura. Recently, SFTs have been reported in the head and neck region located in subsites such as the orbit. SFTs of the lacrimal sac are extremely rare, with only six cases reported in the English literature. We describe a SFT arising from the right lacrimal sac and extending along the nasolacrimal duct into the nasal cavity. Although, the tumor could not be removed by endoscopic-modified medial maxillectomy (EMMM) alone, combined approach with EMMM and a small external incision achieved the complete removal of the tumor. The patient has remained disease-free 24 months after surgery.

[Solitary Fibrous Tumors of the Nasal and Paranasal Sinuses]

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) are uncommon neoplasm that arises in most cases from the pleura. SFT has been rarely observed in the head and neck, but SFT of the paranasal sinuses is especially rare, with 39 previously reported cases to date including those reported in this abstract. Herein we describe three cases of SFT in the paranasal sinuses that were successfully treated endoscopically. Two of the three cases involved patients with no previous history of SFT. The lesion of one of the patients was pathologically diagnosed as SFT preoperatively, but the other was diagnosed as an angiogenic tumor without any biopsies. The tumors were completely resected after arterial embolization by a transnasal endoscopic procedure. The third case involved a 43-year old man, who had undergone medial maxillectomy through a lateral rhinotomy incision to resect SFT four years and seven months before. The tumor relapsed intracranially and, therefore, a craniotomy procedure followed by endoscopic skull base surgery was performed. Radiation therapy was performed postoperatively because the recurrent tumor was pathologically identified as malignant SFT, which had been classified benign at the time of the first resection. All three patients are presently alive with no evidence of disease.

Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses

The nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses occupy the top of the upper respiratory tract and form pneumatic spaces connected with the atmosphere. They are located immediately beneath the base of the cranium, where crucial vital structures are harbored. From this region, very much exposed to airborne agents, arise some of the more complex and rare benign and malignant lesions seen in humans, whose difficulties in interpretation make this remarkable territory one of the most challenging in the practice of surgical pathology.

Contents of this chapter cover inflammations and infections, polyps and pseudotumors, fungal and midfacial destructive granulomatous lesions, as well as benign, borderline, and malignant neoplasms. Among the neoplasms, emphasis is made on those entities characteristic or even unique for the sinonasal region, such as Schneiderian papillomas, glomangiopericytoma, intestinal- and non-intestinal-type adenocarcinomas, olfactory neuroblastoma, nasal-type NK-/T-cell lymphoma, and teratocarcinosarcoma. Moreover, recently recognized entities involving this territory, i.e., HPV-related non-keratinizing carcinoma, NUT carcinoma, and SMARCB1-deficient basaloid carcinoma, are also discussed in the light of their specific molecular findings. Furthermore, the text is accompanied by numerous classical and recent references, several tables, and 100 illustrations.

Solitary fibrous tumor arising from the superior nasal turbinate: a case report

Solitary fibrous tumor is a rare neoplasm, which was first described as a primary spindle-cell tumor of the pleura, is a type of mesenchymal tumor. Although the majority of these tumors originate in the pleura, they can also derive from extrapleural sites, such as the liver, lung, abdomen, and extremities. We report a rare case of a nasal solitary fibrous tumor that originated from the nasal superior turbinate. The tumor, measuring 45 × 25 × 10 mm, was in the right nasal cavity. We successfully removed the tumor in one piece through endonasal endoscopic surgery. The tumor had spindle-shaped cells within a collagenous stroma and was positive for CD34. There has been no evidence of tumor recurrence in the 14 months following surgery.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the sinonasal cavity: CT and MR imaging findings

SUMMARY

SFT is a rare lesion of the sinonasal cavity. We retrospectively reviewed 5 patients with histopathologically proved sinonasal SFTs to determine their CT and MR imaging features. All patients underwent paranasal sinus CT and MR imaging. Four SFTs occurred in the nasal cavity, and 1, in the maxillary sinus. All SFTs had well-defined margins, and the mean maximum diameter was 55 mm. On nonenhanced CT, 5 SFTs appeared homogeneously isoattenuating to gray matter. The most common manifestations of bony involvement were bony remodeling and thinning. On MR imaging, 5 SFTs were isointense to gray matter on T1-weighted images, and the lesions were isointense in 3 and hypointense in 2 patients on T2-weighted images. The lesions showed heterogeneously marked enhancement on postenhanced MR images. Four patients underwent dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging, and the TICs showed a washout pattern. A familiarity with the imaging findings of sinonasal SFT may help to diagnose this entity.

Atypical solitary fibrous tumor of the nose and maxillary sinus

BACKGROUND

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) belongs to a group of mesenchymal tumors, also known as benign fibrous mesotheliomas or submesothelial fibromas. SFTs of the sinonasal tract are extremely rare.

METHODS

We report a rare case of an atypical SFT of the sinonasal tract presenting with ipsilateral nasal obstruction and recurrent epistaxis. Endoscopy and imaging studies showed a well-circumscribed mass of the nose and the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent total endoscopic resection of the tumor.

RESULTS

Permanent histology and immunohistochemical studies revealed an atypical variant of SFT of the sinonasal tract, with negative surgical margins. The patient did not receive any adjuvant treatment. Postoperative monitoring was uneventful.

CONCLUSION

In general, these tumors are reported to follow an indolent course. SFTs adopt a biological behavior that cannot be determined as malignant. Total surgical resection of the tumor remains the gold-standard method of treatment.

Malignant solitary fibrous tumor of the nasal cavity

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are unusual mesenchymal tumors that were first described as primary spindle-cell neoplasms of the pleura. These tumors have been described in many other locations, including the urogenital system, orbit, mediastinum, and upper respiratory tract. Twenty-two cases of an SFT of the paranasal sinuses and nasal cavity have been reported, but none described a malignant SFT extending through the anterior skull base. A 70-year-old man had a 6-month history of unilateral left-sided epiphora and nasal obstruction. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large left-sided nasal cavity mass with extension into the left extraconal orbit and intracranial extension through the left cribriform plate and ethmoid roof. The patient underwent preoperative embolization of the internal maxillary artery and a subsequent anterior craniofacial resection via a midfacial degloving approach and a left anterior craniotomy. Histopathological analysis of the specimen was consistent with a malignant SFT.

Solitary Fibrous Tumor of the Vagina

Solitary fibrous tumor, initially described in the pleura, is now known to occur in various extrathoracic sites. However, its occurrence in the female genital tract, especially the vagina, is extremely rare. The authors report here a case of a well-circumscribed vaginal spindle cell nodule in a 48-year-old woman with features consistent with solitary fibrous tumor. The diagnosis was established histologically by the varying pattern with hypocellular fibrous areas alternating with hypercellular areas and hemangiopericytoma-like areas and, immunohistochemically by the strong positive reaction for CD34 and Bcl2 with a negative reaction for all other spindle cell and epithelial markers. The differential diagnosis is discussed and a review of the literature is presented.

Solitary fibrous tumor arising from the sphenoid sinus

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon neoplasm that usually arises from the pleura. To our knowledge, only 30 cases of SFTs in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses have been reported in the literature. We describe an SFT that arose from the right sphenoid sinus and extended to the nasal cavity and epipharynx. The tumor was completely removed by endoscopic sinus surgery without complication. The patient is taking an uneventful course without any evidence of recurrence of the disease 8 months after surgery now.

[ 220] Der Stirnfortsatz bildet sich währen der 4. postovulatorischen Woche, aus ihm gehen die oberen und mittleren Anteile des Gesichts hervor. Die Oberkiefer- und Nasenwülste entwickeln sich unterhalb des Stirnfortsatzes. Am Ende der 4. Woche bilden zwei oberflächliche Verdickungen der Nasenwülste die Riechplakoden, die ektodermaler Herkunft sind und aus denen der Epithelbelag der Nasenhöhle und Nasennebenhöhlen hervorgeht. Die Plakoden stülpen sich ein und bilden die Riechgruben, aus denen die vorderen Choanen (Nasenlöcher) und weniger oberflächlich die primitiven hinteren Choanen entstehen. Die medialen Nasen- und Stirnfortsätze bilden das Nasenseptum, die Stirnknochen, Nasenknochen, die Siebbeinzellen- Komplexe und die oberen Schneidezähne. Die lateralen Nasen- und Oberkieferfortsätze vereinigen sich zur Bildung des Philtrum und der Columella. Das knorpelige Nasenskelet bildet sich während der 7. und 8. postovulatorischen Woche tief unterhalb der Nasen- und Stirnbeinknochen aus dem Chondrocranium. Die Nasennebenhöhlen entwickeln sich in der 6. Fetalwoche aus den lateralen Nasenwänden, und ihr Wachstum setzt sich nach der Geburt während des gesamten Kindes- und Jugendalters fort.

Solitary fibrous is rare mesenchymal neoplasm that usually arises in the pleura or less commonly is related to other serosal surfaces. There were reported SFTs in some extrapleural locations. There locations cause diagnostic difficulties. Ethmoid sinuses, nasal cavity and anterior fossa are rare site for SFTs. Authors report a case of SFT of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses and anterior fossa in 33 year-old woman to show the difficulty and importance of recognition. Diagnostic procedures and medical treatment are presented. This report pays attention that SFT should be taken into consideration during diagnostic process of spindle-cell lesions of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses in order to avoid some confusions.

Minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for treating large, benign processes of the nose, paranasal sinus, and pterygomaxillary and infratemporal fossae: solitary fibrous tumour

OBJECTIVES

We report an extremely rare case of a large solitary fibroma of the paranasal sinus, which we treated by sinonasal endoscopic surgery. We describe its clinical and histopathological features, and we report the endoscopic technique used to deal with such a large sinonasal mass (penetrating the pterygomaxillary and infratemporal fossae); we also offer a brief survey of the literature.

CASE REPORT

A woman presented with an approximately one-year history of nasal obstruction. Nasal endoscopy revealed an irregularly shaped, friable, reddish mass that occupied the whole of the right nasal fossa. Magnetic resonance imaging of the paranasal sinuses revealed a large mass that occupied the anterior and posterior ethmoids and the maxillary and sphenoid sinuses, displacing the septum and penetrating the pterygomaxillary fossa, having destroyed the lateral wall of the right nasal fossa. The tumour was resected by means of sinonasal endoscopic surgery; an endoscopic medial maxillectomy with extension to the pterygomaxillary and infratemporal regions was performed. Histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumour. During follow up, we performed regular nasal endoscopies, as well as computed tomography scans one and six months post-operatively.

CONCLUSIONS

Endoscopic techniques are currently the approach of choice for the treatment of such tumours of the sinonasal cavity and pterygomaxillary and infratemporal regions. The size of the lesion did not contraindicate endoscopic sinonasal surgery as a curative treatment.

[Solitary fibrous tumor of the nose and paranasal sinuses]

OBJECTIVE

The solitary fibrous tumor is an uncommon, benign lesion with a mesenchymal origin which arises most commonly from the pleura and, in extremely rare cases, from the mucosa of the nose and paranasal sinuses.

PATIENT AND METHODS

We describe a case of solitary fibrous tumor in the nasal cavity with an extension into both ethmoid sinuses and destruction of the nasal septum in a 64-year-old woman presenting with nasal obstruction and frontal headache. In the histopathologic examination and by immunohistochemistry, the tumor was composed of spindle cells and nodular collagen, and was confirmed as a solitary fibrous tumor. It was completely removed using an endonasal approach with the patient being free of any complaints and without evidence of disease 2 years after surgery.

CONCLUSIONS

Solitary fibrous tumor should be included in diagnostic considerations in patients with sinonasal masses, especially in cases with the appearance of spindle cells. Diagnostic procedures, clinicopathological features, therapeutic options and prognosis of the such tumors are discussed.

Solitary fibrous tumors in the head and neck: new insights and implications for diagnosis and treatment

OBJECTIVES

The solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a potentially malignant spindle cell neoplasm of mesenchymal origin that was originally described as a thoracic lesion originating from pleural tissue. Recently, numerous extrapleural sites of origin have been described, frequently affecting the head and neck region. The purpose of this article is to focus on a formerly underestimated neoplasm and to highlight its appearance in the head and neck region.

METHODS

The authors present 2 illustrative cases, including what is probably the first reported case of an SFT arising in the human tonsillar fossa, and give a clinical and pathological literature review.

RESULTS

The clinical, histologic, and radiologic features are presented, and the surgical treatment is described. The international medical literature concerning SFTs in general and SFTs of the head and neck in particular is reviewed, and the changing concept of SFTs and hemangiopericytomas is discussed on the basis of the updated World Health Organization classification of soft tissue tumors.

CONCLUSIONS

It is nowadays recognized that the large majority of lesions formerly classified as hemangiopericytomas are, in fact, variants of SFTs. Although still a rare occurrence, SFTs have become increasingly recognized, and clinicians should be aware of their presentation.

Giant solitary fibrous tumour of the liver

Background

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon mesenchymal neoplasm that most frequently affects the pleura, although it has been reported with increasing frequency in various other sites such as in the peritoneum, pericardium and in non-serosal sites such as lung parenchyma, upper respiratory tract, orbit, thyroid, parotid gland, or thymus. Liver parenchyma is rarely affected. Clinically, SFTs cause symptoms after having reached a certain size or when vital structures are involved. In recent years, SFTs are more often identified and distinguished from other tumours with a similar appearance due to the availability of characteristic immunohistochemical markers.

Case presentation

In this manuscript we report the case of a large tumour of the liver, which was histologically diagnosed as a SFT, and showed involvement of a single hepatic segment. Because of the patient's presentation and clinical course, it may represent a radiation-induced lesion.

Conclusion

When a SFT has been diagnosed, surgery is the treatment of choice. The small number of patients with a SFT of the liver and its unknown natural behaviour creates the need to a careful registration and follow-up of all identified cases

Solitary fibrous tumor with pseudo-lipoblasts involving the sublingual gland: report of a case and review of the literature

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are mesenchymal neoplasms uncommonly occurring in the salivary glands. In rare instances, SFTs can contain mature fat, atrophic fat, or vacuolated cells previously termed 'pseudo-lipoblasts', which may be misinterpreted as a feature of malignancy. We report an unusual tumor with pseudo-lipoblasts occurring in the sublingual gland. The tumor exhibited a prominent hemangiopericytic pattern, bland cytology, and immunohistochemical and morphologic features consistent with that of an SFT. A review of 15 cases of SFTs of the salivary glands is presented. Emphasis is laid upon the histologic differential diagnosis and the clinical features of these tumors.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the retropharynx causing obstructive sleep apnea

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) are rare, usually benign, spindle cell neoplasms that most often originate near mesothelium-lined surfaces of the pleural or peritoneal cavity. SFTs reported in the head and neck occur most commonly in the oral cavity, sinonasal tract, and orbit. We report a case of SFT of the retropharynx causing severe obstructive sleep apnea. The diagnostic and management strategies of SFTs are discussed.

A case of solitary fibrous tumour of the nose and paranasal sinuses

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFT), formerly known as benign fibrous mesothelioma, are rare mesenchymal spindle cell neoplasms, originally described in the pleura, but now found to arise in many other locations such as mediastinum, urogenital tract, face, nose, paranasal sinuses, orbit, meninges, ear, buccal mucosa, tongue, salivary gland etc. It was first described as a distinct neoplasm in 1931 by Klemperer and Rabin. On reviewing the literature, so far, 21 cases have been reported involving the nose and paranasal sinuses. A case of solitary fibrous tumour of the nose and paranasal sinuses is presented.

Endonasal endoscopic resection of an ethmoidal solitary fibrous tumor

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell tumor that typically arises at the level of the pleura in adults. However, SFT has also been reported in various extrapleural sites including orbit, meninges, liver, lung, salivary glands, retroperitoneum, mediastinum. In the head and neck region, SFT has been documented in the external auditory canal, larynx, thyroid, sublingual gland, tongue, parapharyngeal space and the infratemporal fossa. The nose and the paranasal sinuses are a rare site for SFT with only 14 publications in the world literature. We present an additional case of a SFT arising at the level of the right ethmoid sinus successfully removed in one piece endoscopically and review the corresponding literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor of the auditory canal

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm of increasing incidence that was originally described to be of pleural origin; however, more recently, SFT has been reported in extrapleural sites, including the orbit, liver, salivary glands, tongue, nose, paranasal sinuses, larynx, retroperitoneum, meninges, and thyroid. The increase in the number of SFTs does not necessarily mean increased incidence of this tumor but rather an increased understanding of this tumor, especially recognition of this tumor in extrapleural locations, which has been aided by immunohistochemical analysis. We report a case of SFT in the auditory canal, which to our knowledge has not been previously reported, as evident by morphologic findings and immunophenotype.

Solitary fibrous tumor arising in the sphenoethmoidal recess: a case report and review of the literature

Recently, solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) have been reported in the head and neck area, such as the nasal cavity, thyroid, salivary gland, etc. We present a rare case of SFT which arose from the sphenoethmoidal recess of the nasal cavity, penetrating into the sphenoid sinus, and which showed different intensities on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) according to the occupied locations. T2 weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images showed low intensity in the nasal cavity, and iso-intensity in the sphenoid sinus. Enhancement with gadolinium contrast on T1-weighted images was more remarkable in the sphenoid sinus than in the nasal cavity. While the tumor in the nasal cavity showed abundant collagen and high cellularity in microscopic examination, numerous small vessels and dilated vascular spaces were remarkable in the tumor of the sphenoid sinus. MRI findings corresponded to pathological findings. We review SFTs in the head and neck area in the English literature.

Solitary fibrous tumour of the liver: case report and review of the literature

BACKGROUND

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) of the liver are very rare entities. Although firstly described to be tumours of pleural origin, SFTs have been reported in various organs such as the meninges, orbit, upper respiratory tract, thyroid, peritoneum, retroperitoneum and soft tissues. Histologically, this tumour often shows alternating cellular and relatively acellular areas. The cellular areas show a wide variety of patterns, making it difficult for it to be differentiated from other mesenchymal tumours. Its immunohistochemical positivity for CD34 and vimentin is believed to be unique. Histiogenesis of SFTs, however, is not yet fully understood. They are known to be usually benign, with only few reports indicating their ability to metastasize.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

We review the literature on SFTs of the liver and report on the case of a 63-year-old female patient with a large SFT of the right liver.

CONCLUSIONS

Surgical resection seems to be the treatment of choice. Local recurrence is scarce. Due to the very limited number of cases, data regarding the long-term survival of patients are lacking.

Laryngeal solitary fibrous tumor treated with CO2 laser excision: case report

The solitary fibrous tumor is an uncommon unilateral benign lesion that usually arises from the pleura. Recently, these tumors have been described in many other locations, such as the mediastinum, head and neck, orbit and urogenital system. To date, only two cases of solitary fibrous tumor arising from the larynx have been reported in the scientific literature. We describe a new case of laryngeal solitary fibrous tumor localized at the right false vocal fold. A 29-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of progressive hoarseness and foreign body sensation in the throat. A mass lesion was recognized in the right false vocal fold, and CT scan demonstrated a large, well-defined tumor without signs of infiltration. The tumor was removed by transoral CO(2) laser surgery. The definitive diagnosis was obtained by immunohistochemical analysis that showed vimentin and CD34-positive cells. The patient remains free of tumor after 15 months of follow-up.
