Anaphylaxis due to ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst in a 13-year-old boy

Hydatid cyst, a common disease in the world, is usually transmitted to humans through dog feces. Hydatid cyst is caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Diagnostic interventions for hydatid cyst include physical examination and chest x-ray tomography. Although the treatment options of hydatid cyst vary according to the clinical findings of the patients, the primary treatment may be considered as surgery. We herein reported the case of a child hospitalized due to pneumonia who developed anaphylaxis as a result of the rupture of a pulmonary hydatid cyst.

Rare primary extrahepatic intra-abdominal hydatid cysts

Hydatid disease is an endemic parasitic disease prevalent in sheep-rearing countries. Although liver and lung are the commonly involved organs, hydatid disease can occur in any organ or tissue. In this case series, we share our experience of some rare primary extrahepatic intra-abdominal hydatid cysts.

Laparoscopic treatment of unilocular renal hydatid cyst mimicking a simple cyst in a child

A 110 x 70 x 60-mm hydatid cyst in the right kidney of a 5-year-old boy was treated using a laparoscopic approach. The renal hydatid cyst was not identified before the operation. There were no complications related to surgery and therapy. The child was under follow-up for 12 months and there was no evidence of recurrence on ultrasonography and computed tomography during this period. To our knowledge, this is the first case of renal hydatid cyst treated by laparoscopic approach in a child.

Isolated Unilocular Renal Hydatid Cyst: A Rare Diagnostic Difficulty with Simple Cyst

Hydatid disease is endemic in many parts of the world. The location is mostly hepatic (75%) and pulmonary (15%), and only 10% of the cysts occur in the rest of the body. It may develop in almost any part of the body. Although hydatidosis can be present in all parts of the human body, urinary tract involvement develops in only 2-4% of all cases, and isolated renal cysts are extremely rare. There are no specific clinical symptoms or signs that will reliably confirm the diagnosis of renal echinococcosis. In addition, there is no laboratory finding that is pathognomonic for hydatid disease except for hydatiduria. Routine blood tests are generally normal except for eosinophilia which is found in only 50% of the cases. Radiological studies have a more important place in the preoperative diagnosis of renal hydatic disease. However, there is no specific sign on plain radiography or intravenous urography, and ultrasound or computed tomography cannot always show a hydatidosis as a specific lesion. From these reasons, sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between a unilocular hydatid cyst without mural calcification and a simple renal cyst. So, despite its rarity, hydatid disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in solid organs or other anatomic sites, especially in endemic countries. We present herein a patient with isolated renal hydatid cyst mimicking a simple cyst treated successfully with complete excision.

Subcutaneous extension of a large diaphragmatic hydatid cyst

A 53-year-old male patient with a large hydatid cyst of the left hemidiaphragm and smaller secondary cysts located in the left thoracic cavity and upper left abdominal quadrant presented with two progressively enlarging lipoma-like masses in the left hypochondrium and under the left scapulae respectively. Total excision of all the cysts was performed through a bilateral subcostal incision, with the left hemidiaphragm near totally excised and replaced by a synthetic bilayer mesh.

Hydatid cysts in muscle: a modified percutaneous treatment approach

INTRODUCTION

Any organ in the human body may be affected by hydatid disease, but the liver and the lungs are most commonly affected. A rare localization of hydatid disease is within muscle tissue. Herein we present three patients with muscular hydatid disease who were successfully treated with a modified percutaneous approach.

METHODS

Patients with Gharbi type III cysts were treated on an outpatient basis. All procedures were performed under ultrasound guidance in the ultrasonography unit of our department. After local anesthesia, percutaneous puncture was performed in a one-step procedure. After free drainage stopped, absolute ethanol and polidocanol were injected into the cyst cavity. After the procedure, the patient was observed for at least six hours for any adverse reactions and sent home. Patients were followed-up with ultrasonography. A positive treatment effect was characterized by a reduction of the cyst's pseudo-tumor pattern and size, and by detachment of the germinal membrane.

RESULTS

The three patients in this report had a total of five hydatid cysts in muscle tissue and were all successfully treated with a modified percutaneous approach without recurrence.

CONCLUSION

Percutaneous drainage without re-aspiration is simple, easy to apply, low cost, repeatable, and does not require hospitalization. There have been no reported deaths associated with the procedure and morbidity is very low. When the technique is applied properly, relapses do not occur. With its low complication rate and its suitability for outpatient treatment, this method can be an alternative to surgery or puncture, aspiration, injection, and re-aspiration (PAIR) in selected patients.
