The value of plasma fibrinogen estimations in cattle: a comparison with total leucocyte and neutrophil counts

Could fibrinogen and hsCRP be useful for assessing personal risk in workers exposed to a mixture of ultrafine particles and organic solvents?

Purpose: Our study focuses on elucidating if two common inflammatory biomarkers, easily performed in any laboratory - high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), as well as fibrinogen - could be used to assess the personal health risk of workers exposed to a complex occupational exposure to ultrafine particles (UFP) and a mixture of organic solvents. Methods: To assess the inflammatory response on the body, laboratory determinations were performed by testing the serum levels of hsCRP and fibrinogen, in exposed and unexposed groups. Results: There are no statistically significant differences for hsCRPs (p-0.25), medians were similar in groups. The mean values of fibrinogen in the three groups were: in the workers group (1st group): 346.2 mg/dl, in the office staff group (2nd group): 328.7 mg/dl, and in the control group (3rd group): 284.8 mg/dl, with significant differences between 1st group vs 3rd group and between 2nd group vs 3rd group (p-0.002). UFP levels differ between the groups, as follows: 1st group were exposed to the highest levels, ranging from 48349 to 3404000 part/cm3; 2nd group, ranging from 17371 to 40595 part/cm3; and 3rd group, ranging from 213 to 16255 part/cm3. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that fibrinogen is a useful inflammatory biomarker for exposure to a mixture of UFP and organic solvents. On the other hand, hsCRP is not a useful inflammatory biomarker in occupational exposure to UFP and organic solvents. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the extent to which fibrinogen is more or less influenced by organic solvents or UFP alone.

Acute-phase response in dairy cows with surgically-treated abdominal disorders

Ninety-seven dairy cows suffering from traumatic reticuloperitonitis, abomasal displacement, and other gastrointestinal disorders or dystocia were referred for abdominal surgery. Plasma protein concentrations, including plasma fibrinogen and haptoglobin, and conventional haematological variables were determined both pre- and postoperatively. The examined variables were not of value in predicting the outcome of the abdominal disorders in general, but fibrinogen concentrations may be helpful in postoperative monitoring of infectious complications, such as peritonitis. Fifty-five per cent of the cows had increased haptoglobin concentrations preoperatively and abdominal surgery led to an additional haptoglobin increase for a further 2-3 days. It is recommended that pre- and postoperative haptoglobin values should be compared when monitoring infectious complications. Non-parametric receiver operating characteristics (ROC) analysis suggested that plasma haptoglobin concentration was the most accurate parameter for differentiating traumatic reticuloperitonitis from other gastrointestinal disorders, but plasma fibrinogen and globulin concentrations were also of value in this respect.

Preliminary observations on plasma fibrinogen and plasma protein concentrations and on plasma protein:fibrinogen ratios in clinically healthy buffaloes

The plasma fibrinogen concentration, the total plasma protein concentration and the plasma protein to fibrinogen ratio (PP:F) were determined in clinically healthy Nili Ravi buffaloes. The plasma fibrinogen concentrations in calves, lactating and non-lactating buffaloes were 513 +/- 62, 615 +/- 90 and 544 +/- 74 mg/dl, respectively, and were statistically different (p < 0.05). Total plasma protein concentrations in these animals were 7.15 +/- 0.28, 9.32 +/- 0.53 and 8.79 +/- 0.58 g/dl. PP:F for all animals was between 11 and 19. Fibrinogen levels were positively correlated with plasma protein (r = 0.59) and negatively correlated with PP:F (r = -0.59).

Bovine and canine acute phase proteins

Acute phase proteins are serum proteins which increase in concentration during the acute phase response to inflammation or infection. The response occurs in all animals, but in different species the response of individual proteins can be significantly different. Of the numerous acute phase proteins which have been identified in humans, a number have been examined in cattle and dogs but usually on an individual basis with little reference to their part in the acute phase response. Biochemical, physiological and clinical investigations into haptoglobin, fibrinogen, alpha 1-proteinase inhibitor, ceruloplasmin, seromucoid and C-reactive protein of cattle and dogs have therefore been reviewed with the emphasis on their role in this response to tissue damage.
