Service Sire Effects on Body Condition Score, Milk Production, and Rebreeding of Mixed-Aged Dairy Cows Bred to Angus and Hereford Bulls—A Case Study in New Zealand

Beef-breed bulls are used in dairy herds to produce a calf of greater value for finishing than calves sired by dairy bulls. There is limited research about which beef-breed bulls are most appropriate, and whether any negative impact on cow performance in terms of milk production and rebreeding should be considered. The aim of this case study was to compare the body condition score, milk production, and rebreeding performance of mixed-aged dairy cows bred to a selection of Angus and Hereford beef-breed bulls. Body condition score, post-calving live weight, milk production, rebreeding performance, and survival of 952 mixed-aged dairy cows artificially bred to 65 Angus and Hereford bulls were compared. There was no effect of service sire on post-calving live weight, days in milk, milk production, or inter-calving intervals of mixed-aged cows. Service sire had an effect on the calving day due to differences in gestation length (p < 0.001), although this did not translate into an effect on days in milk. A longer gestation length negatively influenced pregnancy rates, and greater birth weight of the calf negatively influenced survival to rebreeding (p < 0.05), indicating the potential for an effect of service sire. Selection of beef-breed service sires for dairy cows should include emphasis on lighter calves and shorter gestation lengths. The general absence of the service sire effect on the parameters measured in this study indicated that any of the service sires used in this experiment would be appropriate for use over dairy cows.

Associations between early lactation milk protein concentrations and the intervals to calving for Holstein cows of differing parity

High milk protein concentrations (MP%) have been positively associated with the reproductive performance of lactating dairy cows. No studies have measured the effects of this association on subsequent calving dates in multiparous cows, nor assessed whether the underlying causal mechanisms are present in nulliparous heifers. Holstein cows (primiparous = 918; multiparous = 4242) were selected from herds that had seasonally concentrated calving patterns resulting from seasonally restricted breeding periods. In seasonally calving herds, the date of a herd’s planned start of calving (PSC date) is the average gestation length of 282 days after the date that the preceding breeding period commenced, so that the interval from the herd’s PSC date to each cow’s actual calving date (PSC-to-calving interval) primarily reflects the time to conception from the start of the breeding period in the previous year. This measure was used to compare associations between the average MP% during the first 120 days of lactation and time to the calving that initiated that lactation in primiparous and multiparous cows. Early lactation MP% was negatively associated with PSC-to-calving interval. A 1% difference in MP% was associated with an 8-day difference in the average PSC-to-calving interval in primiparous cows and a 31–35-day difference in the average interval in multiparous cows. The observed associations between early lactation MP% and PSC-to-calving interval are likely to involve determinants present during a cow’s breeding period that affect the probability of conception. Some of these determinants are not restricted to early lactation as the association between MP% and PSC-to-calving interval in primiparous cows is a reflection of the reproductive performance in nulliparous heifers at ~15 months of age.

Calving patterns in seasonal dairy herds

Two field studies examined the calving patterns of cows in seasonal dairy herds in the Waikato (Field Study 1) and South Taranaki regions (Field Study 2). The first study examined patterns for cows commencing their second or subsequent lactation in herds which had used an inseminating service during the previous season. The second study included first lactation heifers only in 15 herds where animals had been naturally mated, and in 15 herds in which they had been synchronised and then artificially inseminated at the synchronised oestrus. The parameters describing calving patterns were based on the date for each herd's planned start of calving (PSC), which was 282 days from the date on which breeding commenced in the preceding season. The average interval from PSC to mean calving date for the 35 herds in Field Study 1 was 22 days, with individual herds ranging from 15 to 30 days. In herds with heifers which had been naturally mated (Field Study 2), it was 17.6 days compared to 11.0 days for previously synchronised animals. Calculating the intervals from PSC to median calving date and separately for the last two quartiles more effectively described a herd's calving pattern. The duration for the last quartile of the calving pattern was influenced by the extent and timing of induced calving. In Field Study 1, 88.6% of the 35 herd owners induced premature parturition in at least one cow. In these herds, 11.3% of cows were treated and calved prematurely. Only 61.7% of heifers which had previously been naturally mated calved by 3 weeks after PSC. Their calving dates were not evenly distributed over this 3-week period, with 9.8% in the first week and 25.6% in the third week. The calving pattern for heifers which had been previously synchronised showed several distinct peaks. Calvings to the synchronised mating were completed 15 days after PSC, by which time 64.7% of animals had calved. By 3 weeks after PSC, 72.9% of these heifers had calved. The results showed that there was considerable variation in calving patterns in seasonal dairy herds. This variation would have been due to differences in conception pattern, and the way induced calving had been applied. The calving pattern in heifers which had been naturally mated was less concentrated than had been expected. Synchronisation can significantly concentrate the calving pattern of these first lactation animals. The parameters used to describe calving patterns may be less applicable in herds in which a high proportion of animals is induced to calve prematurely, or where a whole herd is synchronised. Nonetheless, they do serve as an illustrative example of the variation in calving patterns among herds.

A longitudinal study of reproductive performance and management of 82 dairy herds in the Waikato region with differing policies on the routine use of induction of parturition

AIMS

To describe the reproductive performance and management practices over three lactations in dairy herds that had different policies on the routine use of induction of parturition; to describe any change in outcomes in herds that ceased inductions during the study period; and to investigate other herd-level factors associated with reproductive performance.

METHODS

From 2002 to 2004 inclusive, a longitudinal study was undertaken in 82 herds in the Waikato region of New Zealand. The main outcome variables were the percentage of cows pregnant after 8 weeks of mating (8-week in-calf rate) and the percentage of cows not pregnant at the end of mating (final empty rate). Data were obtained from pregnancy diagnosis records from a veterinary practice and from an electronic database, and a questionnaire. Herds were classified as either not using inductions in the three lactations (Nil; n=14), ceased inductions in the second or third lactation (Transitional; n=12), or continuing to induce (Continuing; n=56).

RESULTS

Nil herds had a higher 8-week in-calf rate (p=0.01) than Transitional or Continuing herds (83%, 78% and 79%, respectively). The final empty rate in Nil and Transitional herds was similar (10.2% and 9.9%), tended to be greater in Nil than in Continuing herds (10.2% vs 9.0%; p=0.06) and was greater in Transitional than in Continuing herds (9.9% vs 9.0%; p=0.04), respectively. Multivariable modelling found that 8-week in-calf rates were additionally associated with year of lactation, interval from the planned start of calving (PSC) to the median calving date, duration of artificial insemination, and 21-day submission rate; and that final empty rates were associated with year of lactation, predominant breed, percentage of the herd calving within 40 days of the planned start of mating (PSM), the total duration of mating, and the 21-day submission rate, but not the herd induction policy. A change to ceasing routine use of induction tended to be associated (p=0.07) with a 2.5% increase in the final empty rate in the lactation of change.

CONCLUSIONS

The reproductive performance of herds was associated with induction policy, in addition to other factors. Herds that ceased induction had a greater 8-week in-calf rate but a greater final empty rate than those that continued. The higher empty rate in Nil herds was partly due to their shorter duration of mating.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Herdowners and their advisors planning to cease routine use of induction should plan for an increase in the final empty rate in both the lactation of change and in the longer term, and undertake measures to mitigate against this effect.

Climatic factors and secondary sex ratio in dairy cows

The hypothesis for this study was that the prevailing climate around the time of conception was associated with changes in the secondary sex ratio (SSR) in grazing, seasonally bred dairy cattle. Calving date, parity, cow breed, and calf sex were obtained for 8,621 lactations (with single births only) from 1,897 cows between 1970 and 2003 (inclusive). Conception date was estimated by subtracting a gestation length of 282 d from the date at calving. Climatic factors, including maximum and minimum ambient temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, sunlight hours, and evaporation rate, were averaged across the week immediately prior to conception for all lactations. Sun radiation data were available after 1976. Generalized estimating equations, with cow included as a repeated effect, were used to determine the effect of climate around the time of conception on the logit of the probability of a male calf. Breed of cow, year of conception, and parity at conception did not affect the SSR. The odds of a male calf being born were 3.74 times greater when the immediately previous calf born was male. A male calf was more likely to be born following periods of elevated air temperature, greater evaporation, or both. A 1 degrees C increase in average maximum air temperature from the average (18.3 degrees C), during the week immediately prior to conception, was associated with a 1-percentage unit increase in the probability of a male calf being born (i.e., from 52 to 53%). A corresponding 1 degrees C increase in average minimum air temperature was reflected in a 0.5-percentage unit increase in the probability of a male calf being born. The probability of a male calf being born increased by 2.9 percentage units with each additional millimeter of evaporation per day. Results indicate that climatic factors associated with elevated temperatures and greater evaporation may influence the SSR in dairy cattle.

Pre-conception energy balance and secondary sex ratio--partial support for the Trivers-Willard hypothesis in dairy cows

According to the Trivers-Willard hypothesis, maternal condition at or around conception affects the secondary sex ratio in mammals. However, there are little or no data available on indicators of maternal condition in dairy cows on the sex of the resultant offspring. A total of 76,607 body condition score (BCS; scale of 1 to 5) records and 76,611 body weight (BW) records from 3,209 lactations across 1,172 cows were extracted from a research database collated from one research herd between 1986 and 2004, inclusive. Exclusion of multiple births and cows with no information before calving (e.g., nulliparous animals) resulted in 2,029 records with BCS and BW observations from the previous calving, and 2,002 and 1,872 lactations with BCS and BW observations at conception and midgestation, respectively. Change in BCS and BW between calving and conception and between conception and midgestation was calculated per lactation. Generalized estimating equations were used to model the logit of the probability of a male calf, in which cow was included as a repeated effect with a first-order autoregressive correlation structure assumed among records within cow. Of the BCS variables investigated, there was a linear relationship between the logit of the probability of a male calf and BCS change between calving and conception, the rate of BCS change over this period (BCS divided by days in milk), and BCS at the calving event immediately before conception. The birth of a bull calf was 1.85 times more likely in cows that lost no BCS from calving to conception compared with cows that lost one BCS unit from calving to conception. This increase in odds was equivalent to a 14% unit increase in the probability of a male calf (from 54 to 68%). The amount of BW lost between calving and conception and the rate of loss affected the sex of the resultant offspring. Less BW loss or greater BW gain between calving and conception was associated with greater likelihood of a male calf. Results suggested a positive effect of pre-conception BCS and BW change on secondary sex ratio, agreeing with the Trivers-Willard hypothesis that females in good physiological condition are more likely to produce male offspring.

Advances in bovine theriogenology in New Zealand. 1. Pregnancy, parturition and the postpartum period

Unique systems of breeding and calving management have been developed to allow New Zealand cattle herd owners to maintain seasonally concentrated calving patterns. Improved pastures are used as the sole ration for most beef and dairy cows with limited conservation and no grain feeding. Patterns of calving are described in relation to herd Planned Start of Calving (PSC) dates, calculated as 282 days after the first date of insemination in the preceding seasonal artificial breeding (AB) programme. Corticosteroids have been systematically used in over 80% of New Zealand dairy herds to induce premature parturition (calving induction) during the third trimester of pregnancy for about 25 years, to condense calving patterns into periods of 6-12 weeks. Widespread use of calving induction has minimised the adverse effects of declining reproductive performance in dairy herds on the sustainability of seasonally concentrated calving. The use of calving induction is now discouraged on animal welfare grounds and due to possible consequences for the marketing of New Zealand dairy products. Recent declines in the reproductive performance of dairy herds are linked to increased prevalence of extended periods of postpartum anovulatory anoestrus (AA), which has become the major form of infertility in dairy herds in New Zealand and can be related to reliance on grazed pasture as the sole diet for cows of increasing genetic merit. The prevalence of AA is influenced by by parity, breed, recent genetic origin within a breed, body condition score, herd and year. management strategies such as once-daily milking, preferential grazing or feeding of silage, have not proven as successful as hormonal treatments. Although seasonal concentrated calving has remained a standard feature of the industry's low-cost, pasture-based system of management, continuing research will be required to economically maintain this pattern.
