Abstract
Bacterial infection is a major obstacle to the wound healing process. The hydrogel dressings with a simpler structure and good antibacterial and wound healing performance are appealing for clinical application. Herein, a robust hydrogel was synthesized from acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA) and N,N'-methylene diacrylamide (MBA) via a redox initiating polymerization. The polymerization conditions were optimized to obtain the hydrogel with minimum unreacted monomers, which were 0.25% and 0.12% for AM and AA, respectively. The hydrogel had good mechanical strength, and could effectively resist damage by external forces and maintain a good macroscopic shape. It showed large water uptake capacity, and could post load a wide range of molecules via hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. Loading of antibiotic doxycycline (DOX) enabled the hydrogel with good antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria in vitro and in vivo. In a rat model of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)-infected full-thickness skin defect wound, the DOX-loaded hydrogel showed good therapeutic effect. It could significantly promote the wound closure, increased the collagen coverage area, down-regulate the expressions of pro-inflammatory TNF-α and IL-1β factors, and up-regulate the expressions of anti-inflammatory IL-4 factor and CD31 neovascularization factor.

Abstract
Photocrosslinked gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) hydrogels have attracted great concern in the biomedical field because of their good biocompatibility and tunable physicochemical properties. Herein, different approaches to synthesize GelMA were introduced, especially, the typical method using UV light to crosslink the gelatin-methacrylic anhydride (MA) precursor was introduced in detail. In addition, the traditional and cutting-edge technologies to characterize the properties of GelMA hydrogels and GelMA prepolymer were also overviewed and compared. Furthermore, the applications of GelMA hydrogels in cell culture and tissue engineering especially in the load-bearing tissue (bone and cartilage) were summarized, followed by concluding remarks.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to synthesize and characterize a new form of topical membranes as chitosan-based hydrogel membranes for bacterial skin infections. The polymeric membranes were synthesized by modification in free radical solution polymerization technique. High molecular weight (HMW) chitosan polymer was cross-linked with monomer 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) through cross-linker N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). Mupirocin, an antibiotic, was used as model drug. The polymeric membranes were prepared in spherical form that found stable and elastic. Characterization of hydrogel membranes was performed by FTIR, SEM, DSC, TGA, swelling behavior, drug release, irritation study, and ex vivo drug permeation and deposition study. Structural and thermal studies confirmed the formation of new polymeric network with enhanced stability of hydrogel membranes. Permeation flux of drug from optimized formulation through rabbit's skin assessed by using Franz cell was up to 104.09 μg cm-2 h-1. Furthermore, hydrogel membrane has significant retention of drug in skin up to 2185 μg 1.5 cm-2. Draize patch test confirmed the synthesized hydrogels as non-irritant to skin. The preparation of a topical membrane with improved antibacterial activity within controlled release manner is desirable for the advancement and treatment of skin diseases.

Abstract
Recent wearable devices offer portable monitoring of biopotentials, heart rate, or physical activity, allowing for active management of human health and wellness. Such systems can be inserted in the oral cavity for measuring food intake in regard to controlling eating behavior, directly related to diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. However, existing devices using plastic circuit boards and rigid sensors are not ideal for oral insertion. A user-comfortable system for the oral cavity requires an ultrathin, low-profile, and soft electronic platform along with miniaturized sensors. Here, we introduce a stretchable hybrid electronic system that has an exceptionally small form factor, enabling a long-range wireless monitoring of sodium intake. Computational study of flexible mechanics and soft materials provides fundamental aspects of key design factors for a tissue-friendly configuration, incorporating a stretchable circuit and sensor. Analytical calculation and experimental study enables reliable wireless circuitry that accommodates dynamic mechanical stress. Systematic in vitro modeling characterizes the functionality of a sodium sensor in the electronics. In vivo demonstration with human subjects captures the device feasibility for real-time quantification of sodium intake, which can be used to manage hypertension.
