Conductive polymers for cardiac tissue engineering and regeneration

Cardiovascular diseases, such as myocardial infarction, are considered a significant global burden and the leading cause of death. Given the inability of damaged cardiac tissue to self-repair, cell-based tissue engineering and regeneration may be the only viable option for restoring normal heart function. To maintain the normal excitation-contraction coupling function of cardiac tissue, uniform electronic and ionic conductance properties are required. To transport cells to damaged cardiac tissues, several techniques, including the incorporation of cells into conductive polymers (CPs) and biomaterials, have been utilized. Due to the complexity of cardiac tissues, the success of tissue engineering for the damaged heart is highly dependent on several variables, such as the cell source, growth factors, and scaffolds. In this review, we sought to provide a comprehensive overview of the electro CPs and biomaterials used in the engineering and regeneration of heart tissue.

Integrated photo-inspired antibacterial polyvinyl alcohol/carboxymethyl cellulose hydrogel dressings for pH real-time monitoring and accelerated wound healing

Recurrent infection of chronic wounds remains a major clinical challenge. Recently, the hydrogel antibacterial materials have attracted extensive attention for preventing infection in wound healing. In this study, a hybrid hydrogel made of polyvinyl alcohol - iodine (PAI), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and carbamino quantum dot (CQDs) was prepared by the cross-linking of hydrogen bonds, named as polyvinyl alcohol‑iodine/sodium carboxymethyl cellulose/carbon quantum dots (PAI/CMC/CQDs). The composite hydrogels exhibited the outstanding photothermal conversion efficiency with near infrared (NIR) light irradiation, and the high antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Meanwhile, the elevated temperature of the composite hydrogels up to ~45 °C was able to stimulate the migration of epidermal cell to accelerate skin repair. Given that PAI and CQDs could respond to different pH values (5-8), the real-time would pH information was provided by the visible light and fluorescent light dual monitoring system by naked eye. Moreover, the visible-fluorescent images could be collected and transformed into RGB signals to quantify the would pH levels, avoiding secondary injuries caused by frequent dressing changes. PAI/CMC/CQDs was demonstrated the significant therapeutic effect on chronic wounds by eliminating bacterial infections and promoting skin repair under the smart RGB monitoring system.

L-cysteine aided polyaniline capped SrO2 nanoceramics: Assessment of MC3T3-E1-arbitrated osteogenesis and anti-bactericidal efficacy on the polyurethane 2D nanofibrous substrate

Fabricating bioartificial bone graft ceramics retaining structural, mechanical, and bone induction properties akin to those of native stem-cell niches is a major challenge in the field of bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Moreover, the developed materials are susceptible to microbial invasion leading to biomaterial-centered infections which might limit their clinical translation. Here, we successfully developed biomimetic porous scaffolds of polyurethane-reinforcedL-cysteine-anchored polyaniline capped strontium oxide nanoparticles to improve the scaffold's biocompatibility, osteo-regeneration, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. The engineered nanocomposite substrate PU/L-Cyst-SrO₂ @PANI (0.4 wt%) significantly promotes bone repair and regeneration by modulating osteolysis and osteogenesis. ALP activity, collagen-I, ARS staining, as well as biomineralization of MC3T3-E1 cells, were used to assess the biocompatibility and cytocompatibility of the developed scaffolds in vitro, confirming that the scaffold provided a favorable microenvironment with a prominent effect on cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. Furthermore, osteogenic protein markers were studied using qRT-PCR with expression levels of runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2), secreted phosphoprotein 1 (Spp-I), and collagen type I (Col-I). The overall results suggest that PU/L-Cyst-SrO₂ @PANI (0.4 wt%) scaffolds showed superior interfacial biocompatibility, antibacterial properties, load-bearing ability, and osteoinductivity as compared to pristine PU. Thus, prepared bioactive nanocomposite scaffolds perform as a promising biomaterial substrate for bone tissue regeneration.

Self-doped conducting polymers in biomedical engineering: Synthesis, characterization, current applications and perspectives

Recent studies willingly agree that conducting polymers (CPs) are attractive materials for biomedical engineering purposes, mainly because of their unique physicochemical characteristics combining electrical conductivity and high biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the applicability of CPs is restricted by their limited stability under physiological conditions, associated with a decrease in electrical conductivity upon dedoping. Accordingly, modifying chemical structure of CPs to exhibit a self-doping effect seems to be an appealing approach aimed to enhance their functionality. The aim of this review is to provide a current state-of-the-art in the research concerning self-doped CPs, particularly those with potential biomedical applications. After presenting a library of available structure modifications, we describe their physicochemical characteristics, focusing on achievable conductivities, electrochemical, optical and mechanical behaviour, as well as biological properties. To highlight high applicability of self-doped CPs in biomedical engineering, we elaborate on biomedical areas benefiting most from using this type of conducting materials.

Emerging Role of Piezo Ion Channels in Cardiovascular Development

Mechanical cues are crucial for vascular development and the proper differentiation of various cell types. Piezo1 and Piezo2 are mechanically activated cationic channels expressed in various cell types, especially in vascular smooth muscle and endothelial cells. It is present as a transmembrane homotrimeric complex, regulating calcium influx. Local blood flow associated shear stress, in addition to blood pressure associated cell membrane stretching are key Piezo channel activators. There is rising proof, showcasing Piezo channels significance in myocytes, cardiac fibroblast, vascular tone maintenance, atherosclerosis, hypertension, NO generation, and baroreceptor reflex. Here, we review the role of Piezo channels in cardiovascular development and its associated clinical disorders. Complexation of an Azo Dye by Cyclodextrins: A Potential Strategy for Water Purification

The chemistry of the host-guest complex formation has received much attention as a highly efficient approach for use to develop economical adsorbents for water purification. In the present study, the synthesis of three β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) inclusion complexes with the oil orange SS (OOSS) azo dye as a guest molecule and their potential applications in water purification are described. The complexes were synthesized by the coprecipitation method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FTIR and thermal analyses confirmed the encapsulation of OOSS dye within the hydrophobic cavity of β-CD. The encapsulation of hydrophobic dye inside the β-CD cavity was mainly due to the hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction. The results showed that the stability of the OOSS dye had been improved after the complexation. The effect of three different compositions of the host-guest complexes was analyzed. The present study demonstrated that the hydrophobic dye could be removed from aqueous solution via inclusion complex formation. Thus, it can play a significant role in removing the highly toxic OOSS dye from the industrial effluent.
