Validity and Reliability of the Golombok-Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS) in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

Patient-reported outcome measures for assessing health-related quality of life in people with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are important tools to assess outcomes relevant to patients, with Health-Related Quality Of Life (HRQOL) as an important construct to be measured. Many different HRQOL PROMs are used in the type 2 diabetes field, however a complete overview of these PROMs is currently lacking. We therefore aimed to systematically describe and classify the content of all PROMs that have specifically been developed or validated to measure (aspects of) HRQOL in people with type 2 diabetes. A literature search was performed in PubMed and EMBASE until 31 December 2021. Studies on the development or validation of a PROM measuring HRQOL, or aspects of HRQOL, in people with type 2 diabetes were included. Title and abstract and full-text screening were conducted by two independent researchers and data extraction was performed independently by one of the researchers. Data were extracted on language in which the PROM was developed, target population, construct(s) being measured, names of (sub)scales and number of items per (sub)scale. In addition, all PROMs and subscales were classified according to specific aspects of HRQOL based on the Wilson & Cleary model (symptom status, functional status, general health perceptions) to aid researchers in PROM selection. In total 220 studies were identified that developed or validated PROMs that measure (aspects of) HRQOL in people with type 2 diabetes. Of the 116 unique HRQOL PROMs, 91 (of the subscales) measured symptom status, 60 measured functional status and 26 measured general health perceptions. In addition, 16 of the PROMs (subscales) measured global quality of life. 61 of the 116 PROMs (subscales) also include characteristics of the individual (e.g. aspects of personality, coping) or environment (e.g. social or financial support) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs, e.g. measure of a patient's perception of their personal experience of the healthcare they have received, e.g. treatment satisfaction), which are not part of the HRQOL construct. Only 9 of the 116 PROMs measure all aspects of HRQOL based on the Wilson & Cleary model. Finally, 8 of the 116 PROMs stating to measure HRQOL, measured no HRQOL construct. In conclusion, a large number of PROMs are available for people with type 2 diabetes, which intend to measure (aspects of) HRQOL. These PROMs measure a large variety of (sub)constructs, which are not all HRQOL constructs, with a small amount of PROMs not measuring HRQOL at all. There is a need for consensus on which aspects of HRQOL should be measured in people with type 2 diabetes and which PROMs to use in research and daily practice. PROSPERO: CRD42017071012. Scales and assessments of sexual dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is a very frequent non-motor symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, patients are often reluctant to declare their sexual problems and many clinicians do not inquire about them during routine visits. The use of validated rating scales and questionnaires allows overcoming these difficulties, characterizing the nature and causes of the patient's sexual dysfunction, and helping to implement and monitor the most adequate interventions. There is a wide range of instruments available for assessing sexual dysfunction in PD, including generic and specific ones. In this chapter, we review the most used rating scales and questionnaires, with a description of its components, characteristics and psychometric attributes.

Female Sexual Dysfunction in Diabetes: Mechanisms, Diagnosis and Treatment

Female sexual dysfunction (FSD) is an underinvestigated comorbidity of diabetes mellitus, often not evaluated in diabetes clinics. Diabetic women should be encouraged to talk about this topic by their diabetologist, because these problems could be comorbid to cardio-metabolic alterations, as it happens in the male counterpart. This review summarizes evidence on sexual dysfunction characteristics in diabetic women, exploring possible underlying pathogenic mechanisms. The role of hypoglycemic drugs in this context was also evaluated. To date, no specific questionnaire has been designed for the assessment of sexual dysfunctions in diabetic female patients but the use of colour-doppler ultrasound of clitoral arteries has been highlighted as a useful tool for the assessment of cardiovascular risk in these women. Similarly, no specific guidelines are available for the treatment of FSD in the diabetic population but patients should be supported to have a healthy lifestyle and, in the absence of contraindications, can benefit from already approved treatments for FSD.

Exploring the Role of Sexual Avoidance in Male Sexual Dysfunction

Theoretical models of male sexual dysfunction highlight the role of sexual avoidance as a maintaining factor. However, little empirical research has directly tested the role of sexual avoidance in samples of men with sexual problems. The goals of the current study were to A) assess the association between sexual avoidance, sexual function, and subjective sexual well-being, and B) explore possible predictors of sexual avoidance, including insecure attachment, activation of negative sexual schemas, and trait experiential avoidance. One hundred and fifty eight men with self-identified impairments in sexual function (low desire, erectile function, and/or premature/delayed ejaculation) completed validated self-report measures in a secure online survey. Sexual avoidance was uniquely predicted by most aspects of sexual function, and was correlated with poorer subjective sexual well-being. Higher levels of attachment avoidance and activation of negative schemas uniquely predicted more frequent sexual avoidance. Alternatively, interaction models suggested that impaired erectile function was less likely to be associated with sexual avoidance for those with high levels of attachment anxiety and for those with high levels of trait experiential avoidance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

How Is the Sexual Function of Premenopausal Chinese Women Without Hyperlipidemia?

Introduction

Most premenopausal women in China have normal lipid profiles while the sexual function among them was scarcely demonstrated.

Aim

To find out the characteristics of the sexual function in premenopausal Chinese women without hyperlipidemia using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction (GRISS).

Methods

This cross-sectional study was performed to find out the characteristics of sexual function in premenopausal Chinese women without hyperlipidemia. Between January 2019 and March 2019, we recruited 216 women, 25–49 years of age. Data from questionnaires and health checkups were collected and analyzed.

Main Outcome Measure

We report the prevalence of and factors related to female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in premenopausal Chinese women without hyperlipidemia in accordance with the FSFI and the GRISS.

Results

The prevalence of FSD in our study was 46.2%. The mean age was 38.07 ± 6.94 years. More highly educated women suffered from FSD than those in the control group (61.1% vs 35.2%, P < .05). Binge eating was significantly different between the groups (P = .023). Multiple logistic regression analyses demonstrated that total cholesterol level was positively associated with low desire (OR, 2.13; 95% CI, 1.10–4.13; P = .025) and so was the low-density lipoprotein level (OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.03–4.62; P = .0.041). The high-density lipoprotein level was inversely associated with infrequency (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.06–0.59; P = .004). More women with FSD had orgasm disorder than those in the control group, for 83.3% vs 35.2% in the FSFI (P < .001), 88.9% vs 54.3% in the GRISS (P < .001), respectively. Dissatisfaction remained the most common issue for the control group in both the FSFI and the GRISS (90.50% and 58.10%, respectively).

Conclusions

FSD is frequent in premenopausal Chinese women without hyperlipidemia. Dissatisfaction as the common problem influenced over half of them and orgasm disorder is a severe sexual issue for women with FSD.
