Abstract
A new class of rigid, photoactive heteroditopic anionic ligands based on the 1,10-disubstituted [closo-B10H10]2- anion was designed and six of these compounds were obtained from [closo-B10H10]2- in three steps with yields in the range of 25-30%. The design includes two apical substituents, a metal coordinating cyano group and an azinium (4-cyanopyridinium, 4,4'-bipyridinium, pyrazinium, pyrimidinium, and pyridazinium), which provides a secondary binding site. The azinium substituent is involved in an efficient intramolecular charge transfer process and compensates one of the two delocalized negative charges of the boron cluster. The compounds exhibit intramolecular CT bands with maxima in the range of 340-410 nm (MeCN) and two are weakly fluorescent with significant Stokes shifts. A highly colored bis-zwitterionic byproduct with two clusters, [closo-1-CN-B10H8-10-(pyrazinium-1,4-diyl)-10'-B10H8-1'-CN-closo]2-, was also obtained in a low yield. The ligands were structurally characterized (XRD) and their geometrical and photophysical properties were compared to those of the analogues lacking the CN group and the parent pyridinium derivative. A comparative analysis of experimental data was augmented with DFT and TD-DFT results. Two of the ligands (with the 4,4'-bipyridinium and pyrazinium) were converted to (η5-Cp)(dppe)Fe complexes and one of them was used to obtain a heterodinuclear complex with Cu(pdc)(H2O)3 to demonstrate the ditopic function of the ligand. All three iron complexes were characterized by the XRD method.

Abstract
A ditopic multi-colorimetric probe based on the phenylpridyl-thioic moiety (EN) was synthesized via a Schiff base reaction mechanism and characterized using 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy. The colorimetric analyses carried out revealed that EN was capable of discriminating between a number of heavy metal cations via coordination induced charge transfer, as well as between anions through hydrogen bonding induced charge transfer, in DMSO–H2O (9 : 1). In particular, the ditopic probe could spectrally and colorimetrically recognize the most toxic heavy metal cations of Cd2+, Pb2+ and Hg2+, among others, in DMSO–H2O. Additionally, EN was selective and sensitive to the presence of CN−, F−, AcO− and H2PO4− in the same solvent system as cations. The reversibility and reproducibility studies showed that EN exhibited complementary IMP/INH logic functions, based on colour and spectral switching (ON/OFF), modulated by F−/Al3+. The real time application of the probe was tested on food grade products to detect the presence of F− in toothpastes and mouthwash dissolved in water, as well as cations in underground water (normally saline), which displayed substantial responses. Thus, EN displayed an excellent scope of response and can thus be developed for real time sensing kits, which could be used instantly in on-field analysis. Theoretical studies were conducted to complement the experimental work. A ditopic multi-colorimetric probe based on the phenylpridyl-thioic moiety (EN) was synthesized via a Schiff base reaction mechanism and characterized using 1H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopy.![]()

Abstract
Abstract
Acetylacetone (2,4-pentanedione) derivatives with N donor substituents represent ditopic ligands with coordination sites of distinctly different Pearson hardness. Deprotonation of the acetylacetone (Hacac) moiety leads to O,O′ chelating monoanionic (acac) ligands suitable for coordination to hard cations. The softer N donor site(s) preferably act as nucleophiles towards softer partners. When the organic molecules are employed as linkers and coordinate via either site, they are often selective and allow to synthesize well-ordered heterometallic solids. This review addresses the derivatives of 17 pentanediones with nitrile, pyridyl and pyrazolyl moieties as N donor substituents, with an emphasis on structurally characterized compounds. Depending on the N donor substituents and the cations, O,O′ or N coordination will dominate. The nitrile-substituted compounds essentially behave as acetylacetones; they may easily O,O′ coordinate to a wide range of cations whereas N coordination is limited to AgI, CuI or, in the case of less soft cations, to longer and presumably weaker contacts, e.g. to the more distant sites in Jahn–Teller distorted CuII. In contrast, pyridyl-substituted pentanediones act as N donor ligands, regardless whether their (H)acac site is chelating a cation or not. The still scarcely explored pyrazolyl derivative shows the most complex coordination pattern: it may be deprotonated both at the acetylacetone and the pyrazol site, the latter affording N,N′ bridging ligands. In addition to N donor nucleophilicity, the distance between the alternative coordination sites and their mutual orientation are relevant for crystal engineering applications.

Abstract
We describe a quantitative analysis of the complexation-induced inversion of a screw-sense preference based on a conformationally dynamic double-helix structure in a macrocycle. The macrocycle is composed of two twisting units (terephthalamide), which are spaced by two strands (1,3-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene), and is designed to generate a double-helix structure through twisting about a C2 axis in a conrotatory manner. The attachment of chiral auxiliaries to the twisting units induces a helical preference for a particular sense of (M)- or (P)-helicity through the intramolecular transmission of chirality to dynamic double helices. The twisting unit can also act as a binding site for capturing a guest molecule, and, in a complexed state, the preferred screw sense of the dynamic double-helix structure is reversed to exhibit the contrary preference. We quantitatively monitored the complexation-induced inversion of the screw-sense preference using 1H NMR spectroscopy, which enabled us to observe independently two species with (M)- or (P)-helicity in both the absence and presence of a guest molecule. Inversion of the screw-sense preference was induced upon complexation with an achiral guest as well as a chiral guest.

Abstract
Abstract
Vanadium(V) oxidation of ethanol follows a first order dependency on the concentration of ethanol, vanadium(V), H+ and HSO4
–. These observations remain unaltered in the presence of externally added surfactants. The effect of the cationic surfactant (i.e., N-cetylpyridinium chloride [CPC]), anionic surfactant (i.e., sodium dodecyl sulphate [SDS]) and neutral surfactant (i.e., Triton X-100 [TX-100]) has been studied. CPC inhibits the reactions, whereas SDS and TX-100 accelerate the reaction to different extents. Observed effects have been justified by considering the hydrophobic and electrostatic interaction between the surfactants and reactants. SDS and TX-100 can be used as catalysts in the production of acetaldehyde from ethanol.
