Abstract
A new pyrazole based thiosemicarbazone ligand, 5-methyl-3-formylpyrazole-N(4)-isopropylthiosemicarbazone, (HMPzNHPri) (compound I), and its cobalt(III) and nickel(II) complexes, [Co(MPzNHPri)2]Cl (compound II) and [Ni(HMPzNHPri)2]Br2 (compound III), respectively, have been synthesized and characterized through various physico-chemical and spectroscopic studies. Both the reported Co(III) and Ni(II) complexes are cationic in nature and behave as 1:1 and 1:2 electrolytes in MeOH, respectively. Electronic spectral features of the complexes have classified them as distorted octahedral ones. IR spectral data (4000-450 cm-1) have suggested a monoprotic tridentate (NNS) function of compound I coordinating to the Co(III) ion via the pyrazolyl (tertiary) ring nitrogen, azomethine nitrogen and thiolato sulphur atom; while for compound III, compound I has been found to act as neutral NNS tridentate one, coordinating to Ni(II) via the pyrazolyl iminic nitrogen, azomethine nitrogen and thioketo sulphur. Structural features of all the compounds are confirmed by the single crystal X-ray data. All the compounds reported here have been found to exhibit significant photocatalytic activity towards degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) under UV radiation. Anticancer activity of all the three compounds against cancer cell lines (HeLa and A549) and a normal cell line (HEK293) have been investigated. Compound II has been found to be more efficient against the human cervical cancer cell (HeLa) and the lung cancer cell (A549) than compounds I and III. The ligand and both the complexes display potential activities against both gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis MTCC 7193) and gram-negative bacteria (E. coli MTCC 1610).

Abstract
The great success of cisplatin as a chemotherapeutic agent considerably increased research efforts in inorganic biochemistry to identify more metallic drugs having the potential of treating lung cancer. Metal coordination centres, which exhibit a wide range of coordination numbers and geometries, various oxidised and reduced states and the inherent ligand properties offer pharmaceutical chemists a plethora of drug structures. Owing to the presence of C=N and C=S bonds in a thiosemicarbazone Schiff base, N and S atoms in its hybrid orbital has lone pair of electrons, which can generate metal complexes with different stabilities with most metal elements under certain conditions. Such ligands and complexes play key roles in the treatment of anti-lung cancer. Research regarding metallic anti-lung cancer has advanced considerably, but there remain several challenges. In this review, we discuss the potential of thiosemicarbazone Schiff base complexes as anti-lung cancer drugs, their anti-cancer activities and the most likely action mechanisms involving the recent families of copper, nickel, platinum, ruthenium and other complexes.

Abstract
This paper reports the synthesis and detailed characterisation of copper(II) and nickel(II) complexes with tridentate thiosemicarbazone ligands H 2 L1 and H 2 L2 derived from 2-acetylpyrazine. The ligands and their metal complexes were characterised by different physicochemical techniques, including elemental and thermogravimetric analysis; UV-Vis, IR, 1H-NMR, and 13C-NMR spectroscopy; molar conductance measurements; and mass spectrometry. The crystal structure of the H 2 L1 ligand was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The spectral data showed that the thiosemicarbazone behaves as an NNS tridentate ligand through the nitrogen atoms of the azomethine group and pyrazine ring and the sulphur atom of the thioamide group. Elemental and thermal analyses indicated that the obtained metal complexes had a 1 : 1 stoichiometry (metal-ligand). The interactions between these complexes and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) were studied by electronic absorption and viscosity measurements. The activities of these compounds against oxidative DNA cleavage were examined by agarose gel electrophoresis. Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes can wind DNA strands through groove interactions and promote strand breakage of the plasmid pmCherry under oxidative stress conditions. Moreover, all the complexes could interact more strongly with DNA than could with the free ligands. Finally, the antibacterial activities of the ligands and their complexes were determined by in vitro tests against Gram-positive bacterial strains (S. aureus ATCC 25923, L. monocytogenes ATCC 19115, and B. cereus ATCC 10876) and Gram-negative bacterial strains (E. coli ATCC 25922, S. typhimurium ATCC 14028, and K. pneumoniae ATCC BAA-2146) using the broth microdilution method. The metal complexes showed greater antimicrobial activities than the precursor ligands against some of the microorganisms.

Abstract
Malaria is a potentially life-threatening disease, affecting approx. 214 million people worldwide. Malaria is caused by a protozoan, Plasmodium falciparum, which is transmitted through the Anopheles mosquito. Malaria treatment is becoming more challenging due to rising resistance against the antimalarial drug, chloroquine. Novel compounds that target aspects of parasite development are being explored in attempts to overcome this wide-spread problem. Anti-malarial drugs target specific aspects of parasite growth and development within the human host. One of the most effective targets is the inhibition of hematin formation, either through inhibition of cysteine proteases or through iron chelation. Metal-thiosemicarbazone (TSC) complexes have been tested for antimalarial efficacy against drug-sensitive and drug-resistant strains of P. falciparum. An array of TSC complexes with numerous transition metals, including ruthenium, palladium, and gold has displayed antiplasmodial activity. Au(I)- and Pd(II)-TSC complexes displayed the greatest potency; 4-amino-7-chloroquine moieties were also found to improve antiplasmodial activity of TSCs. Although promising metal-TSC drug candidates have been tested against laboratory strains of P. falciparum, problems arise when attempting to compare between studies. Future work should strive to completely characterize synthesized metal-TSC structures and assess antiplasmodial potency against several drug-sensitive and drugresistant strains. Future studies need to precisely determine IC50 values for antimalarial drugs, chloroquine and ferroquine, to establish accurate standard values. This will make future comparisons across studies more feasible and potentially help reveal structure-function relationships. Investigations that attempt to link drug structures or properties to antiplasmodial mechanism(s) of action will aid in the design of antimalarial drugs that may combat rising drug resistance.

Abstract
Cobalt complexes with semi- and thiosemicarbazones of 8-quinolinecarboxaldehyde have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis. These novel complexes and a previously synthesized cobalt complex with a selenium-based selenosemicarbazone ligand showed myeloid differentiation activity on all trans retinoic acid resistant HL-60 acute myeloid leukaemia cells. They also showed varying levels of cytotoxicity on five human tumor cell lines: cervix carcinoma cells (HeLa), lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549), colorectal adenocarcinoma cells (LS-174), breast carcinoma cells (MDA-MB-361), and chronic myeloid leukaemia (K562) as well as one normal human cell line: fetal lung fibroblast cells (MRC-5). Leukaemia differentiation was most strongly induced by a metal-free oxygen ligand and the selenium ligand, whilst the latter and the cobalt(ii) complex with an oxygen ligand showed the strongest dose-dependent cytotoxic activity. In four out of five investigated tumor cell lines, it was of the same order of magnitude as cisplatin. These best compounds, however, had lower toxicity on non-transformed MRC-5 cells than cisplatin.
