Recent advances in structural engineering of photocatalysts for environmental remediation

Photocatalysis appears to be an appealing approach for environmental remediation including pollutants degradation in water, air, and/or soil, due to the utilization of renewable and sustainable source of energy, i.e., solar energy. However, their broad applications remain lagging due to the challenges in pollutant degradation efficiency, large-scale catalyst production, and stability. In recent decades, massive efforts have been devoted to advance the photocatalysis technology for improved environmental remediation. In this review, the latest progress in this aspect is overviewed, particularly, the strategies for improved light sensitivity, charge separation, and hybrid approaches. We also emphasize the low efficiency and poor stability issues with the current photocatalytic systems. Finally, we provide future suggestions to further enhance the photocatalyst performance and lower its large-scale production cost. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of photocatalysis in environmental remediation.

Graphene oxide-incorporated silver-based photocatalysts for enhanced degradation of organic toxins: a review

Environmental contamination and scarcity of energy have been deepening over the last few decades. Heterogeneous photocatalysis plays a prominent role in environmental remediation. The failure of earlier metal oxide systems like pure TiO₂ and ZnO as stable visible-light photocatalysts demanded more stable catalysts with high photodegradation efficiency. Silver-based semiconductor materials gained popularity as visible-light-responsive photocatalysts with a narrow bandgap. But their large-scale usage in natural water bodies for organic contaminant removal is minimal. The factors like self-photocorrosion and their slight solubility in water have prevented the commercial use. Various efforts have been made to improve their photocatalytic activity. This review focuses on those studies in which silver-based semiconductor materials are integrated with carbonaceous graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The decoration of Ag-based semiconductor components on graphene oxide having high-surface area results in binary composites with enhanced visible-light photocatalytic activity and stability. It is found that the introduction of new efficient materials further increases the effectiveness of the system. So binary and ternary composites of GO and Ag-based materials are reviewed in this paper.

Photocatalytic Fuel Cells for Simultaneous Wastewater Treatment and Power Generation: Mechanisms, Challenges, and Future Prospects

Technological advancement is accompanied by excessive consumption of fossil fuels and affluent uses of chemical substances in many sectors, including transportation and manufacturing companies, and so on. Being an exhaustible resource, the excessive use of fossil fuels and of chemical substances may lead to a serious energy crisis in the long run, and it may additionally impose environmental pollution. Attempts have been made in the solution of such serious issues from every nook and corner. Nonetheless, no method has been found to be a panacea in waste water treatment and subsequent beneficiaries. One of the attempts in the solution to such issues is the application of photocatalytic technology, which could serve as a dual function in environmental remediation and clean energy production. A photocatalytic fuel cell is a tool developed for the recovery of energy from organic wastes. A rational cell construction needs the fabrication of photoelectrodes, the design of a photoanode and a photocathode chamber, in addition to an ion-transport membrane for pollution treatment and electricity generation. In this review, comprehensive fundamental assessments and recent developments in the design of photocatalytic fuel cells, their applications, future prospects, and challenges are covered.

Titanium dioxide based nanocomposites - Current trends and emerging strategies for the photocatalytic degradation of ruinous environmental pollutants

Many ruinous pollutants are omnipresent in the environment and among them; pesticides are xenobiotic and pose to be a bio-recalcitrance. Their detrimental ecological and environmental impacts attract attention of environmental excerpts and the surge of stringent regulations have endows the need of a technically feasible treatment. This critical review emphasizes about the occurrence, abundance and fate of structurally distinct pesticides in different environment. The practiced remedial strategies and in particular, the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) those utilize the photo-catalytic properties of nano-composites for the degradation of pollutants are critically discussed. Photo-catalytic degradation utilizes many composite materials at nano-scale level, wherein synthesis of nano-composites with appropriate precursors and other adjoining functional moieties are of prime importance. Therefore, suitable starter materials along with the reaction conditions are prerequisite for effectively tailoring the nano-composites. The aforementioned aspects and their customized applications are critically discussed. The associated challenges, opportunities and process economics of degradation using photo-catalytic AOP techniques are highlighted and in addition, the review tries to explain how best the photo-degradation can be a stand-alone tool with a societal importance. Conclusively, the future prospects for undertaking new researches in photo-catalytic breakdown of pollutants that can be judiciously sustainable.

Highly efficient and cheap treatment of dye by graphene-doped TiO2 microspheres

Highly efficient dye wastewater treatment by photocatalytic catalysis commonly requires expensive catalysts, long degradation time and a complicated procedure. Here, we for the first time prepared cheap graphene-doped titanium dioxide microspheres with a simple procedure to degrade dye with high efficiency. When the catalyst concentration was 0.2 g·L^-1, the photocatalysis degradation extent of methylene blue solution, methylene green solution and 1,9-dimethyl methylene blue solution reached 96.4, 85.9 and 98.7%, respectively. The results showed that the degradation reactions accorded with the Langmuir-Hinshelwood model, and the photocatalytic reactions belonged to a first-order reaction in the primary stage. Furthermore, different photocatalytic degradation mechanisms were proposed, which have not been found in other literature. This work opened a new route for simple preparation of cheap microspheres in photocatalytic dye wastewater treatment with high efficiency.

Recent Advances in TiO2 Films Prepared by Sol-gel Methods for Photocatalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants and Antibacterial Activities

Photocatalysis has recently emerged as an advanced, green, and eco-friendly process for the treatment of wastewater and air, and antimicrobial disinfection applications. In this context, TiO2 nanostructures have been shown to be the prominent photocatalyst candidates due to their low cost, non-toxicity, and ease of fabrication. This review highlights the investigation and development of TiO2 photocatalyst film by sol-gel method with special emphasis on the photodecolorization of synthetic dyes and antibacterial activities. Furthermore, various synthesis methods for the preparation of TiO2 films and their advantages, as well as limitations, are summarized. Finally, recent advances in TiO2 films by sol-gel method for dye degradation and antibacterial activities, challenges, and future perspective are discussed.
