Optimization of Quartz Sand-Enhanced Coagulation for Sewage Treatment by Response Surface Methodology

The quartz sand-enhanced coagulation (QSEC) is an improved coagulation method for treating water, which uses quartz sand as a heavy medium to accelerate the sedimentation rate of flocs and reduce the sedimentation time. The factors that influence the QSEC effect and can be controlled manually include the quartz sand dosage, coagulant dosage, sewage pH, stirring time, settling time, etc., and their reasonable setting is critical to the result of water treatment. This paper aimed to study the optimal conditions of QSEC; first, single-factor tests were conducted to explore the optimal range of influencing factors, followed by response surface methodology (RSM) tests to accurately determine the optimum values of significant factors. The results show that the addition of quartz sand did not improve the water quality of the coagulation treatment, it took only 140 s for the floc to sink to the bottom, and the sediment volume only accounted for 12.2% of the total sewage. The quartz sand dosage, the coagulant dosage, and sewage pH all had a significant impact on the coagulation effect, and resulted in inflection points. A QSEC-guiding model was derived through RSM tests, and subsequent model optimization and experimental validation revealed the optimal conditions for treating domestic sewage as follows: the polyaluminum chloride (PAC) dosage, cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) dosage, the sewage pH, quartz sand dosage, stirring time, and settling time were 0.97 g/L, 2.25 mg/L, 7.22, 2 g/L, 5 min, and 30 min, respectively, and the turbidity of the treated sewage was reduced to 1.15 NTU.

Molecular and microbial insights towards anaerobic biodegradation of anionic polyacrylamide in oil sands tailings

Anionic polyacrylamide (A-PAM) is widely used as a flocculant in the management of oil sands tailings. Nevertheless, apprehensions arise regarding its potential biodegradation and environmental consequences within the context of oil sands tailings. Consequently, it is imperative to delve into the anaerobic biodegradation of A-PAM in oil sands tailings to gain a comprehensive understanding of its influence on tailings water quality. This work explored the dynamics of A-PAM biodegradation across concentrations: 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000, and 2000 mg/kg TS. The results showed a significant decrease in A-PAM concentration and molecular weight at lower concentrations (50 and 100 mg/kg TS) compared to higher ones, suggesting enhanced degradation efficiency. Likewise, the organic transformation and methane production exhibited dependency on A-PAM concentrations. The peak concentrations observed were 20.0 mg/L for volatile fatty acids (VFAs), 0.07 mg/L for acrylamide (AMD), and 8.9 mL for methane yield, with these maxima being recorded at 50 mg/kg TS. The biodegradation efficiency diminishes at higher concentrations of A-PAM, potentially due to the inhibitory effects of polyacrylic acid accumulation. A-PAM biodegradation under anaerobic condition did not contribute to acute toxicity or genotoxicity. SEM-EDS, FT-IR and XRD analyses further revealed that higher concentrations of A-PAM inhibited the biodegradation by altering floc structure and composition, thereby restricting the microbial activity. Major microorganisms, including Smithella, Candidatus_Cloacimonas, W5, XBB1006, and DMER64 were identified, highlighting A-PAM's dual role as a source of carbon and nitrogen under anaerobic conditions. The above findings from this research not only significantly advance understanding of A-PAM's environmental behavior but also contribute to the effective management practices in oil sands tailings.

Effect of Ultrasonic Pretreatment on Flocculation Filtration of Low-Rank Coal Slurry

The efficient filtration of low-rank coal (LRC) slurry was significantly beneficial to the production process of wet coal beneficiation. However, relatively few studies have been reported on novel pretreatment methods for the efficient filtration of LRC slurry. In this paper, the mechanism of ultrasonic pretreatment to promote flocculation and filtration of slurry was studied. The hydrophobic variation of the slurry surface was measured by contact angle and XPS. The flocculation properties of slurry were characterized using zeta potential and FBRM. The effects of filter cake porosity and ultrasonic pretreatment on slurry filtration resistance were calculated by L-F NMR and Darcy's theory. The results showed that the ultrasonic pretreatment promoted the flocculation and filtration performance of LRC slurry, increased the filtration rate, and decreased the cake moisture content. Meanwhile, the contact angle of LRC increased significantly from 50.1° to 67.8° after ultrasonic pretreatment, and the surface tension of the filtrate decreased from 69.5 to 53.31 mN/m. Ultrasonic pretreatment reduced the absolute value of the zeta potential of coal slurry from 24.8 to 21.0 mV, and the average chord length of flocs increased from 5-10 μm to 25-30 μm, thus weakening the electrostatic repulsion between coals to promote floc formation. In addition, the pore tests and filtration theory calculations showed that the ultrasonic pretreatment significantly improved the permeability of the filter cake to water and reduced the resistance to slurry during filtration. In particular, the mesopore porosity increased by 9.18%, and the permeability increased by 2.937 × 10⁸ m². Therefore, this contributed to the reduction of slurry filtration resistance. This research provides an efficient method for promoting the efficient filtration of slurry.

An Assessment of the Role of Combined Bulk Micro- and Nano-Bubbles in Quartz Flotation

Bulk micro-nano-bubbles (BMNBs) have been proven to be effective at improving the flotation recovery and kinetics of fine-grained minerals. However, there is currently no research reported on the correlation between the properties of BMNBs and flotation performance. For this purpose, aqueous dispersions with diverse properties were created by altering preparation time (0, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 min), aeration rate (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 L/min) and aging time (0, 0.5, 1, and >3 min). Micro- and nano-bubbles were characterized using focused beam reflection measurements (FBRM) and nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), respectively. The micro-flotation of quartz particles was performed using an XFG-cell in the presence and absence of BMNBs with Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as a collector. The characterization of bubble sizes showed that the bulk micro-bubble (BMB) and bulk nanobubble (BNB) diameters ranged from 1–10 μm and 50–400 nm, respectively. It was found that the preparation parameters and aging time considerably affected the number of generated bubbles. When BNBs and BMBs coexisted, the recovery of fine quartz particles significantly improved (about 7%), while in the presence of only BNBs the promotion of flotation recovery was not significant (2%). This was mainly related to the aggregate via bridging, which was an advantage for quartz flotation. In comparison, no aggregates were detected when only nano-bubbles were present in the bulk solution.

A Review on Coagulation/Flocculation in Dewatering of Coal Slurry

Coal slurry is an essential component of mining operations, accounting for more than half of operating costs. Dewatering technology is simultaneously confronted with obstacles and possibilities, and it may yet be improved as the crucial step for reducing the ultimate processing cost. Coagulation/flocculation is used as a dewatering process that is reasonably cost-effective and user-friendly. This paper reviews application of different coagulants/flocculants and their combinations in dewatering mechanisms. In this context, various polymeric flocculants are discussed in the coal slurry in depth. Many operational parameters that influence the performance of coal slurry flocculation are also presented. Furthermore, a discussion is provided on the mechanism of flocculants’ interaction, the strategy of combining flocculants, and efficient selection methods of flocculants. Finally, coagulation/flocculation remaining challenges and technological improvements for the better development of highly efficient treatment methods were highlighted, focusing on the intricate composition of slurry and its treatment difficulties.
