LIGHT BACKSCATTERING AS A TECHNIQUE TO MEASURE SOLIDS PARTICLE SIZE AND CONCENTRATION IN SUSPENSION

High-resolution structural elucidation of extremely swollen lyotropic phases

Self-assembled lyotropic phases are important in a variety of applications, in particular microemulsions are essential for formulation science. A spectacular situation arises when microemulsions are made to swell by systematically increasing the bending modulus of the surfactant film separating the oil and water regions. In an attempt to realize such extremely swollen microemulsion phases, Peter et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett., 76 (1996) 3866] found a variety of lyotropic phases including a long-range ordered three-dimensional cubic phase over a narrow section of the complex phase diagram of a pseudo-quaternary system composed of decane, brine, octanol, and sodium dodecyl sulfate. In this work, the same region of the phase diagram was reinvestigated using high-resolution small-angle X-ray scattering (HR-SAXS) and rheo-SAXS, which is an important technical aspect for homogenizing the sample and orienting the structural units. Whilst the formation of a swollen two-dimensional hexagonal phase was observed, the structural features of a cubic phase were not detected. The long correlation lengths noted prior were also seen here, over 2000 nm for the hexagonal phase, taken from rheo-SAXS measurements. Based on the measurements covering more than three orders of magnitude in scattering vector, the structure appeared to be an organization of elongated swollen emulsion droplets, which could form an interconnected structure, dense liquid-like order, or further order into a hexagonal morphology with unusually large lattice spacings for a surfactant system.

Investigation on dynamic calibration for an optical-fiber solids concentration probe in gas-solid two-phase flows

This paper presents a review and analysis of the research that has been carried out on dynamic calibration for optical-fiber solids concentration probes. An introduction to the optical-fiber solids concentration probe was given. Different calibration methods of optical-fiber solids concentration probes reported in the literature were reviewed. In addition, a reflection-type optical-fiber solids concentration probe was uniquely calibrated at nearly full range of the solids concentration from 0 to packed bed concentration. The effects of particle properties (particle size, sphericity and color) on the calibration results were comprehensively investigated. The results show that the output voltage has a tendency to increase with the decreasing particle size, and the effect of particle color on calibration result is more predominant than that of sphericity.

Determination of the size, concentration, and refractive index of silica nanoparticles from turbidity spectra

The size and concentration of silica cores determine the size and concentration of silica/gold nanoshells in final preparations. Until now, the concentration of silica/gold nanoshells with Stober's silica core has been evaluated through the material balance assumption. Here, we describe a method for simultaneous determination of the average size and concentration of silica nanospheres from turbidity spectra measured within the 400-600 nm spectral band. As the refractive index of silica nanoparticles is the key input parameter for optical determination of their concentration, we propose an optical method and provide experimental data on a direct determination of the refractive index of silica particles n = 1.475 +/- 0.005. Finally, we exemplify our method by determining the particle size and concentration for 10 samples and compare the results with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and dynamic light scattering data.

Monte Carlo calculation of backscattered light intensity by suspension: comparison with experimental data

An optical device for measuring high particle concentrations is presented. The sensor consists of two optical fibers used for the emission and reception of the light scattered by particles in suspension. To describe the light path in this medium, we developed a Monte Carlo calculation including a mean free path, a phase function for particle scattering, and an absorption rate. A similarity law links concentration variations to a homothetic space transformation. A comparison between our calculation and experimental data is given for well-stirred, dense suspensions of silica particles with different sizes. A good fit is found when the model parameters (mean free path and phase function) are chosen according to the data given by a particle sizer.
