Evidence for the existence of an effective interfacial tension between miscible fluids. 2. Dodecyl acrylate-poly(dodecyl acrylate) in a spinning drop tensiometer

We studied drops of dodecyl acrylate in poly(dodecyl acrylate) (molecular weight of 25,000) in a spinning drop tensiometer to determine whether an effective interfacial tension (EIT) existed between these two miscible fluids. We found convincing evidence. We estimated the mechanical relaxation time from an immiscible analogue (1-propanol and poly(dodecyl acrylate)) and showed that the dodecyl acrylate drops maintained quasi-steady diameters long after this relaxation period. Drops continuously grew in length and became more diffuse, but the width of the transition zone did not grow with t(1/2) as expected from Fick's law although this system had been shown to follow Fick's law in a static configuration (Antrim, D.; Bunton, P.; Lewis, L. L.; Zoltowski, B. D.; Pojman, J. A. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 11842-11849). The EIT was determined from Vonnegut's equation, EIT = (Deltarho)omega(2)r(3)/4; both the inner and outer diameters were measured, yielding values of 0.002 and 0.02 mN m(-1), respectively. The EIT was found to be independent of the rotation rate above 6000 rpm and independent of the initial drop volume. The EIT was found to decrease with temperature and increase with the difference in concentration between the monomer drop and polymer-monomer fluid. The square gradient parameter, k, was determined from EIT = k(Deltac(2)/delta), where Deltac is the difference in mole fraction and delta is the width of the transition zone. The square gradient parameter was on the order of 10(-9) N. The square gradient parameter was found to decrease with temperature, to be independent of concentration, and to increase with the molecular weight of the polymer.

Numerical study of pattern formation in miscible rotating Hele-Shaw flows

The dynamics of the diffusing interface separating two miscible fluids in a rotating Hele-Shaw cell is studied by intensive and highly accurate numerical simulations. We perform numerical experiments in a wide range of parameters, focusing on the influence of viscosity contrast and Korteweg stresses on the shape of the interfacial patterns. A great variety of morphological behaviors is systematically introduced, and a wealth of interesting phenomena related to finger competition dynamics, filament stretching, and interface pinch off are reveal. Our simulations exhibit miscible patterns that bear a strong resemblance to their immiscible counterparts for larger Korteweg stresses. The quantitative equivalence between such stresses and the usual immiscible surface tension is studied. The concept of an effective interfacial tension is considered, allowing the direct and precise calculation of the important fingering properties under miscible circumstances. Our results show excellent agreement with existing experiments and simulations for corresponding immiscible displacements. This agreement refers to a striking similarity between miscible and immiscible pattern morphologies, and also to an accurate prediction for the typical number of miscible fingering structures formed. Our findings suggest that the effective interfacial tension is both qualitatively and quantitatively equivalent to its immiscible counterpart.

Evidence for the existence of an effective interfacial tension between miscible fluids: isobutyric acid-water and 1-butanol-water in a spinning-drop tensiometer

We report definitive evidence for an effective interfacial tension between two types of miscible fluids using spinning-drop tensiometry (SDT). Isobutyric acid (IBA) and water have an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) of 26.3 degrees C. We created a drop of the IBA-rich phase in the water-rich phase below the UCST and then increased the temperature above it. Long after the fluids have reached thermal equilibrium, the drop persists. By plotting the inverse of the drop radius cubed (r(-)(3)) vs the rotation rate squared (omega(2)), we confirmed that an interfacial tension exists and estimated its value. The transition between the miscible fluids remained sharp instead of becoming more diffuse, and the drop volume decreased with time. We observed droplet breakup via the Rayleigh-Tomotika instability above the UCST when the rotation rate was decreased by 80%, again demonstrating the existence of an effective interfacial tension. When pure IBA was injected into water above the UCST, drops formed inside the main drop even as the main drop decreased in volume with time. We also studied 1-butanol in water below the solubility limit. Effective interfacial tension values measured over time were practically constant, while the interface between the two phases remains sharp as the volume of the drop declines. The effective interfacial tension was found to be insensitive to changes in temperature and always larger than the equilibrium interfacial tension. Although these results may not apply to all miscible fluids, they clearly show that an effective interfacial tension can exist and be measured by SDT for some systems.
