Effects of Arts-Based Pedagogy on Competence Development in Nursing: A Critical Systematic Review

The integration of arts-based methods into nursing education is a topic of growing interest in nursing practice. While there is an emerging body of research on this subject, evidence on competence development remains vague, largely due to methodological weaknesses. The purpose of this review is to evaluate the effectiveness of arts-based pedagogy in nursing, specifically in terms of students' changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It explores which arts-based approaches to nursing education qualify as evidence-based practice in terms of nursing competence. A systematic critical review of research on arts-based pedagogy in nursing was conducted, identifying 43 relevant studies. These studies were assessed for methodological quality based on the CEC Standards for evidence-based practice, and 13 high-quality comparative studies representing a variety of arts-based approaches were selected. Creative drama was identified as the only evidence-based practice in the field, positively affecting empathy. The findings highlight a research gap in nursing education and emphasize the need for measurement and appraisal tools suitable for the peculiarities of arts-based pedagogy.

The construction of competency training mechanism model for tourism undergraduates based on grounded theory

The motivation of this paper is to solve the problem of tourism majors' lack of theoretical knowledge and professional ability by building a capacity training mechanism model based on grounded theory. The goal of the study is to optimize the ability training strategies of tourism undergraduates and improve their professional quality and competitiveness. The paper adopts the ability training model based on grounded theory, and combines with Back Propagation (BP) neural network for optimization and evaluation. By comparing the performance of different ability training mechanisms, this paper explores the best training strategies to provide support and guidance for the training of tourism undergraduates. Firstly, the employment background of the current market is studied and analyzed. By sorting out the relevant documents of grounded theory and combining with the current training strategies of tourism majors, the students' personality characteristics and the basic principles of establishing models are integrated. The Back Propagation (BP) neural network is combined with the grounded theory. The data input of the student ability model is re-optimized. The undergraduate competency training mechanism model is constructed. The results show that when the number of iterations of the network model is 500.00, the evaluation accuracy of the competency training model based on BP neural network can reach 70.00%. At this time, the evaluation accuracy of competency training model based on content analysis method is only 55.00%. In addition, the results show that with the increase of model iterations, the recognition accuracy of the ability model based on grounded theory and the ability training mechanism of content analysis method is continuously improved. However, the ability evaluation model based on grounded theory has higher accuracy, and the accuracy of ability evaluation even exceeds 78.52% when the number of iterations of the network model is 600. Secondly, through the statistics and comparison of the grading results of students of different majors, it is found that the ability training mechanism based on grounded theory can improve the overall ability level of students more significantly. The research has important reference value for promoting the optimization and perfection of students' training strategies.

Character and virtue development in medical learners: another role for the arts?

Medical education serves to teach students how to think and act as future physicians. Doing so successfully requires supporting learners' acquisition of clinical skills and knowledge, but also attending to their character education and virtue development. The arts and humanities are widely embraced as a fundamental component of a complete medical education. While not frequently touted as a useful pedagogical tool for teaching character and virtue, we argue the integration of arts-based activities into medical education can promote virtue development. In this article, we use the virtues framework from the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues at the University of Birmingham to review existing empirical studies of arts-based programs for each of these virtue domains of intellectual, moral, civic, and performance virtues. Learners may benefit from further exploration-both conceptual and empirical-of how the arts can scaffold character development in medical education.

Visual Thinking Strategies in medical education: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Arts-based pedagogical tools have been increasingly incorporated into medical education. Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) is a research-based, constructivist teaching methodology that aims to improve visual literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills through the process of investigating works of art. Harvard Medical School pioneered the application of VTS within medical education in 2004. While there are several studies investigating the use of VTS, there is a need to systematically assess the different programs that exist for medical education and their efficacy in improving relevant clinical skills. This systematic review aims to critically analyse the available evidence of the effectiveness of VTS in medical education to guide future research and provide a framework to adapt medical curricula.

METHODS

A systematic search of PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases (through November 2022) was conducted to identify studies of VTS-based interventions in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. Two reviewers independently screened citations for inclusion criteria, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias. The extracted data was then narratively synthesized.

RESULTS

Of 5759 unique citations, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. After reference review, one additional study was included. Therefore, 11 studies were included in our review. Of these, eight reported VTS-based interventions for undergraduate medical students and three reported interventions in residency training, specifically in dermatology and ophthalmology. The main goal of most studies was to increase observational or visual diagnostic skills. Three of the studies in undergraduate medical education and two in postgraduate achieved a statistically significant improvement in observational skills in post-course evaluations. Some studies reported increased tolerance for ambiguity and empathy.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the studies varied considerably in study design, learning objectives, and outcomes, findings consistently indicate that the VTS approach can serve as a vehicle to develop crucial clinical competencies, encouraging more in-depth visual analysis that could be applied when observing a patient. Despite some limitations of the included studies (lack of control groups, self-selection bias, or non-standard outcome measures), the results of this review provide support for greater inclusion of VTS training in the medical curriculum.

Skills Development through Virtual Art-Based Learning: Learning Outcomes of an Advanced Training Program for Project Managers

With regard to emerging requirements of the professional field, uncertainty competence is a skill to be cultivated and integrated into project management education and training. Art-based learning seems to be a promising approach because the artistic mindset is a suitable model for coping with uncertainty. However, it is widely unclear to what extent art-based learning’s experiential nature will result in soft skills development under the restrictions of distance education. The present quantitative study explores whether—in a virtual learning environment—art-based executive training has a measurable effect on uncertainty competence. Data collection and analysis applied a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Participants in the experimental group completed a month-long virtual training program based on visual arts. Contrary to its objective, the program did not cause meaningful changes in uncertainty competence or perceived stress but had a significant effect on participants’ attentiveness and presence. Participants achieved a higher level of mindfulness in dealing with complexity. The results imply that—even in virtual settings—art-based approaches enhance terms of perceptive capacity and social presence but need to be long-term, related to participants’ individual work-context, and disturb participants’ routines to have an effect on uncertainty competence.
