Abstract
We measured the rotationally resolved infrared spectra of helium solvated methyl fluoride at 3 μm and 10 μm, wherein lies C-H and C-F stretching bands, respectively. The linewidths (FWHM) were found to increase with increasing vibrational energy and range from 0.002 cm-1 in the v3 band (C-F stretch) at ~1047 cm-1, to 0.65 cm-1 in the v4 band (asymmetric C-H stretch) at ~2997 cm-1. In between these two bands we observed the lower and upper components of the Fermi triad bands (ν1/2ν2/2ν5) at ~2859 and ~2961 cm-1. We carried out Stark spectroscopy on the lower band on account of its narrower linewidths (0.04 vs. 0.14 cm-1, respectively). The objective of performing Stark spectroscopy was to see if there is any evidence for a rotational linewidth dependence on the external field strength, due to a reduced difference in between methyl fluorides rotational energy gap and the roton-gap of superfluid helium. We did not find any evidence for such an effect, which we largely attribute to the rotational energy gap not increasing significantly enough by the external field. We point to another molecule (formaldehyde) whose energy levels are predicted to show a more promising response to application of an external field.

Abstract
Van der Waals clusters composed of He and aromatic molecules provide fundamental information about intermolecular interactions in weakly bound systems. In this study, phenol-helium clusters (PhOH-Hen with n ≤ 2) are characterized for the first time by UV and IR spectroscopies. The S1 ← S0 origin and ionization energy both show small but additive shifts, suggesting π-bound structures of these clusters, a conclusion supported by rotational contour analyses of the S1 origin bands. The OH stretching vibrations of the PhOH moiety in the clusters match with those of bare PhOH in both the S0 and D0 states, illustrating the negligible perturbation of the He atoms on the molecular vibration. Matrix shifts induced by He attachment are discussed based on the observed band positions with the help of complementary quantum chemical calculations. For comparison, the UV and ionization spectra of PhOH-Ne are reported as well.

Abstract
The formation of angulon, stemming from the rotor (molecule or impurity), rotating in the quantum many-body field, adds a new member to the quasi-particles' family and has aroused intense interest in multiple research fields. However, the analysis of the coupling strength between the rotor and its hosting environment remains a challenging task, both in theory and experiment. Here, we develop the all-coupling theory of the angulon by introducing a unitary transformation, where the renormalization of the rotational constants for different molecules in the helium nanodroplets is reproduced, getting excellent agreement with the experimental data collected during the past decades. Moreover, the strength of molecule-helium coupling and the effective radius of the solvation shell co-rotating along with the molecular rotor could be estimated qualitatively. This model not only provides significant enlightenment for analyzing the rotational spectroscopy of molecules in the phononic environment, but also provides a new method to study the transfer of the phonon angular momentum in the angulon frame.

Abstract
Diamondoid ethers were introduced into superfluid helium nanodroplets and the resulting clusters were analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Clusters of higher abundances (magic number clusters) were identified and the corresponding potential cluster geometries were obtained from GFN2-xTB and DFT computations. We found that the studied diamondoid ethers readily self-assemble in helium nanodroplets and that London dispersion attraction between hydrocarbon subunits acts as a driving force for cluster formation. On the other hand, hydrogen bonding between ether oxygens and trace water molecules fosters the eventual breakdown of the initial supramolecular aggregate.

Abstract
Mid-infrared spectra of methanol and methanol-water clusters have been investigated in the symmetric CD3 stretching band of CD3OH and CD3OD. We find that the position of this band provides a useful signature of the general type of hydrogen-bonded cluster it is associated with. Our results are consistent with those previously reported in the OH stretching region (Sulaiman, M. I.; Yang, S.; Ellis, A. M. J. Phys. Chem. A 2017, 121, 771-776) in that methanol clusters from the trimer to the pentamer are cyclic and that mixed clusters with one water molecule (and at least two methanol molecules) are also cyclic. We additionally provide evidence that the methanol trimer adopts a chair-like structure (as opposed to bowl-like), that mixed clusters with a larger number of water molecules are also cyclic, and that branched methanol clusters contribute to the depletion signal in larger methanol clusters. We performed double-hybrid DFT calculations which support these interpretations.

Abstract
Helium is the only solvent within which molecules can "freely" rotate, albeit with an increased moment of inertia relative to the gas phase. Evidence for this can be obtained by performing infrared laser spectroscopy on molecules embedded large helium clusters (nanodroplets), which often reveals rotationally resolved lines that are more closely spaced than in vacuo. The additional rotational inertia results from coupling of the helium to the molecule (rotor), and decreases in going from heavy (e.g., SF6) to light (e.g., CH4) rotors due to a partial breakdown in the adiabatic (following) approximation; faster (lighter) rotors cannot couple as well to helium since their effective interaction with helium is less anisotropic. In addition to this "mass" dependence to the coupling, there is also a time dependence to it, which shows up in the IR spectra as an asymmetry in the rovibrational lineshapes; this results from a delay in the response of helium to the change in rotational speed of the solvated molecule (when ΔJ = ±1). In this perspective we discuss the coupling between various probe molecules and helium that have been investigated by infrared laser spectroscopy in the frequency domain.

Abstract
Diamantane clusters formed inside superfluid helium nanodroplets were analyzed by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Distinct cluster sizes were identified as "magic numbers" and the corresponding feasible structures for clusters consisting of up to 19 diamantane molecules were derived from meta-dynamics simulations and subsequent DFT computations. The obtained interaction energies were attributed to London dispersion attraction. Our findings demonstrate that diamantane units readily form assemblies even at low pressures and near-zero Kelvin temperatures, confirming the importance of the intermolecular dispersion effect for condensation of matter.

Abstract
We study the role of pairwise long-range interactions in the formation of van der Waals molecules through direct three-body recombination processes A + B + B → AB + B, based on a classical trajectory method in hyperspherical coordinates developed in our earlier works [J. Pérez-Ríos et al., J. Chem. Phys. 140, 044307 (2014); M. Mirahmadi and J. Pérez-Ríos, J. Chem. Phys. 154, 034305 (2021)]. In particular, we find the effective long-range potential in hyperspherical coordinates with an exact expression in terms of dispersion coefficients of pairwise potentials. Exploiting this relation, we derive a classical threshold law for the total cross section and the three-body recombination rate yielding an analytical expression for the three-body recombination rate as a function of the pairwise long-range coefficients of the involved partners.

Abstract
In this work, we show that van der Waals molecules X-RG (where RG is the rare gas atom) may be created through direct three-body recombination collisions, i.e., X + RG + RG → X-RG + RG. In particular, the three-body recombination rate at temperatures relevant for buffer gas cell experiments is calculated via a classical trajectory method in hyperspherical coordinates [Pérez-Ríos et al., J. Chem. Phys. 140, 044307 (2014)]. As a result, it is found that the formation of van der Waals molecules in buffer gas cells (1 K ≲ T ≲ 10 K) is dominated by the long-range tail (distances larger than the LeRoy radius) of the X-RG interaction. For higher temperatures, the short-range region of the potential becomes more significant. Moreover, we notice that the rate of formation of van der Walls molecules is of the same order of the magnitude independent of the chemical properties of X. As a consequence, almost any X-RG molecule may be created and observed in a buffer gas cell under proper conditions.

Abstract
Recently achieved two-component dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates open exciting possibilities for the study of mixtures of ultradilute quantum liquids. While nondipolar self-bound (without external confinement) mixtures are necessarily miscible with an approximately fixed ratio between the two densities, the density ratio for the dipolar case is free. Therefore, self-bound dipolar mixtures present qualitatively novel and much richer physics, characterized by three possible ground-state phases: miscible, symmetric immiscible, and asymmetric immiscible, which may in principle occur at any population imbalance. Self-bound immiscible droplets are possible due to mutual nonlocal intercomponent attraction, which results in the formation of a droplet molecule. Moreover, our analysis of the impurity regime shows that quantum fluctuations in the majority component crucially modify the miscibility of impurities. Our work opens intriguing perspectives for the exploration of spinor physics in ultradilute liquids, which should resemble to some extent that of ^{4}He-^{3}He droplets and impurity-doped helium droplets.

Abstract
Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) is a method for calculations of intermolecular (noncovalent) interaction energies. The set of SAPT codes that is described here, the current version named SAPT2020, includes virtually all variants of SAPT developed so far, among them two-body SAPT based on perturbative, coupled cluster, and density functional theory descriptions of monomers, three-body SAPT, and two-body SAPT for some classes of open-shell monomers. The properties of systems governed by noncovalent interactions can be predicted only if potential energy surfaces (force fields) are available. SAPT is the preferred approach for generating such surfaces since it is seamlessly connected to the asymptotic expansion of interaction energy. SAPT2020 includes codes for automatic development of such surfaces, enabling generation of complete dimer surfaces with a rigid monomer approximation for dimers containing about one hundred atoms. These codes can also be used to obtain surfaces including internal degrees of freedom of monomers.

Abstract
Solvation of Cs+ ions inside helium droplets has been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. On the one hand, mass spectra of doped helium clusters ionized with a crossed electron beam, HeNCs+, have been recorded for sizes up to N = 60. The analysis of the ratio between the observed peaks for each size N reveals evidences of the closure of the first solvation shell when 17 He atoms surround the alkali ion. On the other hand, we have obtained energies and geometrical structures of the title clusters by means of basin-hopping, diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC), and path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) methods. The analytical He-Cs+ interaction potential employed in our calculations is represented by the improved Lennard-Jones expression optimized on high level ab initio energies. The weakness of the existing interaction between helium and Cs+ in comparison with some other alkali ions such as Li+ is found to play a crucial role. Our theoretical findings confirm that the first solvation layer is completed at N = 17 and both evaporation and second difference energies obtained with the PIMC calculation seem to reproduce a feature observed at N = 12 for the experimental ion abundance. The analysis of the DMC probability distributions reveals the important contribution from the icosahedral structure to the overall configuration for He12Cs+.

Abstract
Understanding the behavior of molecules interacting with superfluid helium represents a formidable challenge and, in general, requires approaches relying on large-scale numerical simulations. Here, we demonstrate that experimental data collected over the last 20 years provide evidence that molecules immersed in superfluid helium form recently predicted angulon quasiparticles [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 203001 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.114.203001]. Most important, casting the many-body problem in terms of angulons amounts to a drastic simplification and yields effective molecular moments of inertia as straightforward analytic solutions of a simple microscopic Hamiltonian. The outcome of the angulon theory is in good agreement with experiment for a broad range of molecular impurities, from heavy to medium-mass to light species. These results pave the way to understanding molecular rotation in liquid and crystalline phases in terms of the angulon quasiparticle.

Abstract
Helium at low temperatures has unique quantum properties such as superfluidity, which causes it to behave differently from a classical fluid. Despite our deep understanding of quantum mechanics, there are many open questions concerning the properties of quantum fluids in nanoscale systems. Herein, the quantum behavior of helium transportation through one-dimensional nanopores was evaluated by measuring the adsorption of quantum helium in the nanopores of single-walled carbon nanohorns and AlPO4-5 at 2-5 K. Quantum helium was transported unimpeded through nanopores larger than 0.7 nm in diameter, whereas quantum helium transportation was significantly restricted through 0.4-nm and 0.6-nm nanopores. Conversely, nitrogen molecules diffused through the 0.4-nm nanopores at 77 K. Therefore, quantum helium behaved as a fluid comprising atoms larger than 0.4-0.6 nm. This phenomenon was remarkable, considering that helium is the smallest existing element with a (classical) size of approximately 0.27 nm. This finding revealed the presence of significant quantum fluctuations. Quantum fluctuation determined the behaviors of quantum flux and is essential to understanding unique quantum behaviors in nanoscale systems.

Abstract
Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) provides a unique set of advantages for parameterizing next-generation force fields from first principles. SAPT provides a direct, basis-set superposition error free estimate of molecular interaction energies, a physically intuitive energy decomposition, and a seamless transition to an asymptotic picture of intermolecular interactions. These properties have been exploited throughout the literature to develop next-generation force fields for a variety of applications, including classical molecular dynamics simulations, crystal structure prediction, and quantum dynamics/spectroscopy. This review provides a brief overview of the formalism and theory of SAPT, along with a practical discussion of the various methodologies utilized to parameterize force fields from SAPT calculations. It also highlights a number of applications of SAPT-based force fields for chemical systems of particular interest. Finally, the review ends with a brief outlook on the future opportunities and challenges that remain for next-generation force fields based on SAPT.

Abstract
We report a facile method of doping cations from an electrospray ionization (ESI) source into superfluid helium droplets. By decelerating and stopping the ion pulse of reserpine and substance P from an ESI source in the path of the droplet beam, about 10(4) ion-doped droplets (one ion per droplet) can be recorded, corresponding to a pickup efficiency of nearly 1 out of 1000 ions. We attribute the success of this simple approach to the long residence time of the cations in the droplet beam. The resulting size of the doped droplets, on the order of 10(5)/droplet, is measured using deflection and retardation methods. Our method does not require an ion trap in the doping region, which significantly simplifies the experimental setup and procedure for future spectroscopic and diffraction studies.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 1938, superfluidity has been the subject of much investigation because it provides a unique example of a macroscopic manifestation of quantum mechanics. About 60 years later, scientists successfully observed this phenomenon in the microscopic world though the spectroscopic Andronikashvili experiment in helium nano-droplets. This reduction of scale suggests that not only helium but also para-H2 (pH2) can be a candidate for superfluidity. This expectation is based on the fact that the smaller number of neighbours and surface effects of a finite-size cluster may hinder solidification and promote a liquid-like phase. The first prediction of superfluidity in pH2 clusters was reported in 1991 based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The possible superfluidity of pH2 was later indirectly observed in a spectroscopic Andronikashvili experiment in 2000. Since then, a growing number of studies have appeared, and theoretical simulations have been playing a special role because they help guide and interpret experiments. In this review, we go over the theoretical studies of pH2 superfluid clusters since the experiment of 2000. We provide a historical perspective and introduce the basic theoretical formalism along with key experimental advances. We then present illustrative results of the theoretical studies and comment on the possible future developments in the field. We include sufficient theoretical details such that the review can serve as a guide for newcomers to the field.

Abstract
The stability of the ground or excited state calcium atom in an argon-doped helium droplet has been investigated using an extension of the helium density functional method to treat clusters. This work was motivated by the experimental study presented in a companion paper, hereafter called Paper I [A. Masson, M. Briant, J. M. Mestdagh, M. A. Gaveau, A. Hernando, and N. Halberstadt, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 184310 (2012)], which investigated Ca(2) photodissociation in an argon-doped helium droplet and the nature of the fluorescent species. It is found that one single argon atom is sufficient to bring the calcium atom inside the droplet, for droplets of over 200 helium atoms. The absorption and emission spectra of CaAr(M) (M = 0-7) clusters have been simulated using the recently developed density sampling method to describe the influence of the helium environment. Absorption spectra exhibit broad, double bands that are significantly blueshifted with respect to the calcium atomic line. The emission spectra are less broad and redshifted with respect to the calcium resonance line. The shifts are found to be additive only for M ≤ 2, because only the first two argon atoms are located in equivalent positions around the calcium p orbital. This finding gives a justification for the fit presented in the companion paper, which uses the observed shifts in the emission spectra as a function of argon pressure to deduce the shifts as a function of the number of argon atoms present in the cluster. An analysis of this fit is presented here, based on the calculated shifts. It is concluded that the emitting species following Ca(2) photodissociation in an argon-doped droplet in Paper I could be Ca∗Ar(M) in a partly evaporated droplet where less than 200 helium atoms remain.

Abstract
In this study we report on the electronic contributions to the linear and nonlinear static electronic electric dipole properties, namely the dipole moment (μ), the polarizability (α), and the first-hyperpolarizability (β), of spatially confined LiH molecule in its ground X (1)Σ(+) state. The finite-field technique is applied to estimate the corresponding energy and dipole moment derivatives with respect to external electric field. Various forms of confining potential, of either spherical or cylindrical symmetry, are included in the Hamiltonian in the form of one-electron operator. The computations are performed at several levels of approximation including the coupled-cluster methods as well as multi-configurational (full configuration interaction) and explicitly correlated Gaussian wavefunctions. The performance of Kohn-Sham density functional theory for the selected exchange-correlation functionals is also discussed. In general, the orbital compression effects lead to a substantial reduction in all the studied properties regardless of the symmetry of confining potential, however, the rate of this reduction varies depending on the type of applied potential. Only in the case of dipole moment under a cylindrical confinement a gradual increase of its magnitude is observed.
