Abstract
An inversion method for time-resolved data from ultrafast experiments is introduced, based on forward-optimization in a trajectory basis. The method is applied to experimental data from X-ray scattering of the photochemical ring-opening reaction of 1,3-cyclohexadiene and electron diffraction of the photodissociation of CS2. In each case, inversion yields a model that reproduces the experimental data, identifies the main dynamic motifs, and agrees with independent experimental observations. Notably, the method explicitly accounts for continuity constraints and is robust even for noisy data.

Abstract
This paper is a detailed review of the chemistry of medium-size reactive systems using the following hydrogen abstraction reactions with ethane, X + C2H6 → HX + C2H5; X ≡ H, F(2P), Cl(2P), O(3P) and OH, and focusing attention mainly on the theoretical developments. These bimolecular reactions range from exothermic to endothermic systems and from barrierless to high classical barriers of activation. Thus, the topography of the reactive systems changes from reaction to reaction with the presence or not of stabilized intermediate complexes in the entrance and exit channels. The review begins with some reflections on the inherent problems in the theory/experiment comparison. When one compares kinetics or dynamics theoretical results with experimental measures, one is testing both the potential energy surface describing the nuclei motion and the kinetics or dynamics method used. Discrepancies in the comparison may be due to inaccuracies of the surface, limitations of the kinetics or dynamics methods, and experimental uncertainties that also cannot be ruled out. The paper continues with a detailed review of some bimolecular reactions with ethane, beginning with the reactions with hydrogen atoms. The reactions with halogens present a challenge owing to the presence of stabilized intermediate complexes in the entrance and exit channels and the influence of the spin-orbit states on reactivity. Reactions with O(3P) atoms lead to three surfaces, which is an additional difficulty in the theoretical study. Finally, the reactions with the hydroxyl radical correspond to a reactive system with ten atoms and twenty-four degrees of freedom. Throughout this review, different strategies in the development of analytical potential energy surfaces describing these bimolecular reactions have been critically analyzed, showing their advantages and limitations. These surfaces are fitted to a large number of ab initio calculations, and we found that a huge number of calculations leads to accurate surfaces, but this information does not guarantee that the kinetics and dynamics results match the experimental measurements.

Abstract
Numerically exact simulations of quantum reaction dynamics, including nonadiabatic effects in excited electronic states, are essential to gain fundamental insights into ultrafast chemical reactivity and rigorous interpretations of molecular spectroscopy. Here, we introduce the tensor-train split-operator KSL (TT-SOKSL) method for quantum simulations in tensor-train (TT)/matrix product state (MPS) representations. TT-SOKSL propagates the quantum state as a tensor train using the Trotter expansion of the time-evolution operator, as in the tensor-train split-operator Fourier transform (TT-SOFT) method. However, the exponential operators of the Trotter expansion are applied using a rank-adaptive TT-KSL scheme instead of using the scaling and squaring approach as in TT-SOFT. We demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of TT-SOKSL as applied to simulations of the photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore in rhodopsin, including nonadiabatic dynamics at a conical intersection of potential energy surfaces. The quantum evolution is described in full dimensionality by a time-dependent wavepacket evolving according to a two-state 25-dimensional model Hamiltonian. We find that TT-SOKSL converges faster than TT-SOFT with respect to the maximally allowed memory requirement of the tensor-train representation and better preserves the norm of the time-evolving state. When compared to the corresponding simulations based on the TT-KSL method, TT-SOKSL has the advantage of avoiding the need to construct the matrix product state Laplacian by exploiting the linear scaling of multidimensional tensor-train Fourier transforms.

Abstract
Mode specificity not only sheds light on reaction dynamics but also opens the door for chemical reaction control. This work reports a state-of-the-art full-dimensional quantum dynamics study on the prototypical hydrogen abstraction reaction of hydrogen with ammonia, which serves as a benchmark for advancing our fundamental understanding of polyatomic reaction dynamics. By taking advantage of the (3 + 1) Radau-Jacobi coordinates, the bond-specific probabilities are resolved with the reactant NH3 initiated from either a non-degenerate or degenerate stretching vibrational state. The observed different atom-specific abstraction probabilities from individual states of the degenerate pair are rationalized in the local mode representation according to the different vibrational energy deposited in each N-H bond. It is verified that the three H atoms in NH3 have the same abstraction probability as that from the degenerate pair and the linear combination of the degenerate pair gives the same reaction probability. In addition, the symmetric and asymmetric stretching modes of the reactant NH3 have comparable efficacies on driving the reaction.

Abstract
A modified Gaussian wave packet relaxation method is proposed to calculate the ground state wave function using an expansion of frozen Gaussian wave packets. This new procedure consists of two steps. In the first step, a multidimensional Gaussian product placed at the ground state equilibrium geometry is propagated in imaginary time. The relaxation optimizes the widths of the one-dimensional Gaussians. In the second step, additional Gaussian wave packets with the same widths are placed near the equilibrium geometry, and the corresponding expansion coefficients are optimized using the same relaxation method. This new algorithm is tested in photodissociation of NOCl and NH3, and the results show good agreement with the exact results in the energy, wave function, and absorption spectrum. In particular, the highly structured absorption spectrum of NH3 is reproduced, underscoring the accuracy of both the initial wave packet and the excited state propagation.

Abstract
A combined experimental-theoretical study is performed to advance our understanding of the dynamics of the prototypical tetra-atom, complex-forming reaction OH + CO → H + CO2, which is also of great practical relevance in combustion, Earth's atmosphere, and, potentially, Mars's atmosphere and interstellar chemistry. New crossed molecular beam experiments with mass spectrometric detection are analyzed together with the results from previous experiments and compared with quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) calculations on a new, full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES). Comparisons between experiment and theory are carried out both in the center-of-mass and laboratory frames. Good agreement is found between experiment and theory, both for product angular and translational energy distributions, leading to the conclusion that the new PES is the most accurate at present in elucidating the dynamics of this fundamental reaction. Yet, small deviations between experiment and theory remain and are presumably attributable to the QCT treatment of the scattering dynamics.

Abstract
In this review, we survey the latest advances in theoretical understanding of bimolecular reaction dynamics in the past decade. The remarkable recent progress in this field has been driven by more accurate and efficient ab initio electronic structure theory, effective potential-energy surface fitting techniques, and novel quantum scattering algorithms. Quantum mechanical characterization of bimolecular reactions continues to uncover interesting dynamical phenomena in atom-diatom reactions and beyond, reaching an unprecedented level of sophistication. In tandem with experimental explorations, these theoretical developments have greatly advanced our understanding of key issues in reaction dynamics, such as microscopic reaction mechanisms, mode specificity, product energy disposal, influence of reactive resonances, and nonadiabatic effects.

Abstract
The differential cross section (DCS) for the CH4 + Cl → CH3 + HCl reaction is studied at six total energies where all of the species are in their ground states. The scattering (S) matrix elements have been calculated by the rotating line umbrella method for a dual-level ab initio analytic potential energy surface. We make the first application to this reaction of nearside-farside (NF) and local angular momentum (LAM) techniques, including resummation orders (r) of 0, 1, 2, and 3 for the partial-wave series representation of the full scattering amplitude. We find that resummation usually cleans the NF r = 0 DCSs of unphysical oscillations, especially at small angles. This cleaning effect is typically most pronounced when changing from no resummation (r = 0) to r = 1; further resummations from r = 1 to r = 2 and from r = 2 to r = 3 have smaller effects. The NF DCS analyses show that the reaction is N-dominated at sideward and large angles, whereas at small angles there are oscillations caused by NF interference. The NF LAM analysis provides consistent and complementary information, in particular for the total angular momenta that contribute to the reaction at different scattering angles. The NF analyses also provide justification for simpler N-dominant dynamical theories such as the semiclassical optical model, which provides an explanation for the distorted mirror image effect for the moduli of the S matrix elements and the DCSs, as well as the use of a hard-sphere DCS over limited angular ranges.

Abstract
A complex guided spectral transform Lanczos (cGSTL) algorithm is proposed to compute both bound and resonance states including energies, widths, and wavefunctions. The algorithm comprises of two layers of complex-symmetric Lanczos iterations. A short inner layer iteration produces a set of complex formally orthogonal Lanczos polynomials. They are used to span the guided spectral transform function determined by a retarded Green operator. An outer layer iteration is then carried out with the transform function to compute the eigen-pairs of the system. The guided spectral transform function is designed to have the same wavefunctions as the eigenstates of the original Hamiltonian in the spectral range of interest. Therefore, the energies and/or widths of bound or resonance states can be easily computed with their wavefunctions or by using a root-searching method from the guided spectral transform surface. The new cGSTL algorithm is applied to bound and resonance states of HO2, and compared to previous calculations.

Abstract
Quantum transition-state theory (QTST) and free-energy instanton theory (FEIT) are two closely related methods for estimating the quantum rate coefficient from the free-energy at the reaction barrier. In calculations on one-dimensional models, FEIT typically gives closer agreement than QTST with the exact quantum results at all temperatures below the crossover to deep tunneling, suggesting that FEIT is a better approximation than QTST in this regime. Here we show that this simple trend does not hold for systems of greater dimensionality. We report tests on several collinear and three-dimensional reactions, in which QTST outperforms FEIT over a range of temperatures below crossover, which can extend down to half the crossover temperature (below which FEIT outperforms QTST). This suggests that QTST-based methods such as ring-polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) may often give closer agreement with the exact quantum results than FEIT.

Abstract
The semiclassical Wigner treatment of bimolecular collisions, proposed by Lee and Scully on a partly intuitive basis [J. Chem. Phys. 73, 2238 (1980)], is derived here from first principles. The derivation combines Heller's ideas [J. Chem. Phys. 62, 1544 (1975); ibid. 65, 1289 (1976); ibid. 75, 186 (1981)], the backward picture of molecular collisions [L. Bonnet, J. Chem. Phys. 133, 174108 (2010)] and the microreversibility principle.
