Effects of different Ca2+ behavior patterns in the electric field on membrane fouling formation and removal of trace organic compounds

The effects of Ca²⁺ on membrane fouling and trace organic compounds (TrOCs) removal in an electric field-assisted microfiltration system were investigated in the presence of Na⁺ alone for comparison. In the electric field, negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) migrated towards the anode far away from the membrane surface, resulting in a 42.9% transmembrane pressure (TMP) reduction in the presence of Na⁺ at 1.5 V. In contrast, because of the stronger charge shielding of Ca²⁺, the electrophoretic migration of BSA was limited and led to a neglectable effect of the electric field (1.5 V) on membrane fouling. However, under 3 V applied voltage, the synergistic effects of electrochemical oxidation and bridging interaction between Ca²⁺ and BSA promoted the formation of denser settleable flocs and a thinner porous cake layer, which alleviated membrane fouling with a 64.5% decrease in TMP and nearly 100% BSA removal. The TrOCs elimination increased with voltage and reached 29.4%-80.4% at 3 V. The electric field could prolong the contact between TrOCs and strong oxidants generated on the anode, which enhanced the TrOCs removal. However, a stronger charge shielding ability of Ca²⁺ weakened the electric field force and thus lowered the TrOCs removal.

Evaluation of Scenedesmus rubescens for Lipid Production from Swine Wastewater Blended with Municipal Wastewater

This study examined the feasibility of using non-sterilized swine wastewater for lipid production by an isolated microalga, Scenedesmus rubescens. Different dilution ratios using municipal wastewater as a diluent were tested to determine the suitable levels of microalgal growth in the wastewaters, its nutrient removal, and its lipid production. The highest lipid productivity (8.37 mg/L/d) and NH4+ removal (76.49%) were achieved in swine wastewater that had been diluted to 30 times using municipal wastewater. Various bacteria coexisted in the wastewaters during the cultivation of S. rubescens. These results suggest the practical feasibility of a system to produce lipids from swine wastewater by using microalgae.

Steroid hormone micropollutant removal from water with activated carbon fiber-ultrafiltration composite membranes

Short activated carbon fibers (ACF) with high surface area were fabricated via carbonization in N₂ and activation in CO₂ at high temperatures, with cellulose fibers as the raw materials. The obtained ACF were subsequently deposited into the support layer of a polyethersulfone (PES) ultrafiltration membrane by a facile filtration process to obtain the sandwich structured ACF-PES composite membrane. The hormone (17β-estradiol, E2) adsorption kinetics and isotherm of ACF in static conditions, as well as E2 removal by filtration with the ACF-PES composite membrane were investigated. In static conditions, ACF rapidly and efficiently adsorbs E2 evidenced by a high removal of >97 %. The fitting of second order kinetics and linear (Henry) adsorption isotherm models indicated the availability of easily accessible adsorption sites. Besides, such efficient E2 adsorption was contributed by many interactions between E2 and ACF, namely hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. The incorporation of ACF in a PES membrane resulted in a minor loss of filtration flux compared with the control membrane, but significantly improved E2 removal through adsorption pathway. With only 1.0 mg ACF incorporated (loading 2.0 g/m²), the composite membrane could reject 76 % of E2 from a 100 ng/L solution at a flux of 450 L/m²∙h, demonstrating that ACF-PES can overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off of traditional UF membranes.

Selection and evaluation of water pretreatment technologies for managed aquifer recharge (MAR) with reclaimed water

Managed aquifer recharge with reclaimed water is a promising strategy for indirect potable reuse. However, residual contaminants in the treated wastewater effluent could potentially have adverse effects on human health. Hence, adequate water pretreatment is required. A multi-criteria approach was used to select and evaluate suitable water pretreatment technologies that can remove these critical contaminants in wastewater effluent for MAR identified in a previous study (Yuan et al., 2017). The treatment efficiency targets were calculated based on the concentrations and the suggested limits of critical contaminants. Treatment efficiency credits were then assigned to each treatment option for the removal of critical contaminants based on literature data. Treatment units that resulted in the highest efficiency credit scores were selected and combined into treatment train options, which were evaluated in terms of treatability, cost, and sustainability. This paper proposes an approach for the selection and evaluation of water treatment options, which will be helpful to guide the future implementation of MAR projects with reclaimed water.
