Abstract
One main objective of this study was to increase the utilization of raw material in the rose (Rosa damascena Mill.) essential oil industry by the application of membrane technologies. In this research, distilled (dearomatized) rose petals, the primary byproduct in essential oil production, were subjected to an enzyme-assisted extraction and subsequent membrane separation for partial concentration at different levels using UF1-PAN and UF10-PAN membranes. The results show that the permeate flux decreased with a rise in volume reduction ratio and increased with a rise in transmembrane pressure and feed flow rate. At the beginning of the process, the highest flux was with the UF1-PAN membrane, but at the end of the process, it was with the UF10-PAN membrane. Total polyphenols of the retentates increased by 27-39% and 26-67% during ultrafiltration with the UF1-PAN and UF10-PAN membranes, respectively, with the highest value obtained for the UF10-PAN membrane at VRR 6. The highest concentration factor and rejection of total solids, total polyphenols, redox-active antioxidants, and radical scavenging antioxidants were obtained at VRR 6 with the UF10-PAN membrane. The use of green technology based on enzyme-assisted extraction and ultrafiltration for recovery and concentration of polyphenols from rose petal byproduct solves practical environmental problems for the treatment and utilization of byproducts from the rose oil industry. The retentate obtained could be used in the food production, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
The wine industry is one of the most relevant socio-economic activities in Europe. However, this industry represents a growing problem with negative effects on the environment since it produces large quantities of residues that need appropriate valorization or management. From the perspective of biorefinery and circular economy, the winery residues show high potential to be used for the formulation of new products. Due to the substantial quantities of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and anthocyanins with high antioxidant potential in their matrix, these residues can be exploited by extracting bioactive compounds before using the remaining biomass for energy purposes or for producing fertilizers. Currently, there is an emphasis on the use of new and greener technologies in order to recover bioactive molecules from solid and liquid winery residues. Once the bio compounds are recovered, the remaining residues can be used for the production of energy through bioprocesses (biogas, bioethanol, bio-oil), thermal processes (pyrolysis, gasification combustion), or biofertilizers (compost), according to the biorefinery concept. This review mainly focuses on the discussion of the feasibility of the application of the biorefinery concept for winery residues. The transition from the lab-scale to the industrial-scale of the different technologies is still lacking and urgent in this sector.

Abstract
AbstractThe present work investigated the impact of ultrafiltration (UF) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes on the recovery and fractionation of polyphenolic compounds and polysaccharides from Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon wine lees. A laboratory-made flat-sheet membrane in cellulose acetate (CA400-38) was used in the UF treatment of Sangiovese wine lees; three laboratory-made flat-sheet membranes in cellulose acetate (CA316, CA316-70, CA400-22) and a polyamide commercial membrane (NF90) were used in the NF treatment of Cabernet Sauvignon wine lees. All membranes were characterized in terms of hydraulic permeability and rejection toward references solutes; the performances of the membranes were measured in terms of productivity, fouling index, cleaning efficiency and retention toward target compounds.Experimental results indicated that all UF and NF membranes were effective in separating target compounds rejecting more than 92% of polysaccharides with polyphenols preferentially permeating through the membrane. The UF membrane rejected more than 40% of total polyphenols; rejections toward non-flavonoids and flavonoids were less than 25% and 12.5%, respectively.The laboratory-made NF membranes exhibited higher permeate flux values (of the order of 11–12 L/m2h) in comparison with the commercial NF membrane, despite the observed differences in the retention of specific solutes. Among the prepared membranes the CA316 showed a total rejection toward most part of non-flavonoids and flavonoids.The experimental results support the use of UF and NF processes in a sequential design to fractionate and refine phenolic compounds from winery sludge for the production of concentrated fractions with high antioxidant activities.

Abstract
The winemaking process in Spain generates a significant amount of wastes such as wine lees. Currently, the nanofiltration process is a viable technique for the revalorization of compounds from wastes. In this aspect, this technique can be used for the recovery of compounds, such as polyphenols, as well as active principles widely used in industries, such as pharmaceuticals or cosmetics. Polyphenols are found in acceptable amounts in wine lees wastes and it is interesting to study the nanofiltration process viability to recover them. In order to study this possibility, it is necessary to determine the choice of the best membrane to use and the effect of operational parameters such as pressure, temperature, cross-flow rates, and concentration. In addition, it is important to be able to develop a mathematical model that can help in the future design of lees treatment plants. The treatment of red wine lees to concentrate polyphenols has been studied in a laboratory plant using different membranes (RO and NF) at different pressures (4.5, 9.5, and 14.5 bar), different temperatures (293, 303, and 308 K), and two concentrations (2100 and 1100 mg tyrosol eq·L−1). The results have been encouraging to consider nanofiltration as a viable technique for the treatment and revalorization of this waste. The most suitable membrane has been the NF270, in which 96% rejection rates have been obtained, with a flux of 30 L·h−1·m−2. Moreover, in this study, the Spiegler–Kedem model (SKM) was used to calculate mass transfer constants and permeabilities. Suitable adjustments of these parameters were obtained to validate this mathematical model. For this reason, the SKM might be used in future studies to continue in the research work of the treatment of wine lees wastes.

Abstract
Wastewaters and by-products generated in the winemaking process are important and inexpensive sources of value-added compounds that can be potentially reused for the development of new products of commercial interest (i.e., functional foods). This research was undertaken in order to evaluate the potential of nanofiltration (NF) membranes in the recovery of anthocyanins and monosaccharides from a clarified Carménère grape marc obtained through a combination of ultrasound-assisted extraction and microfiltration. Three different flat-sheet nanofiltration (NF) membranes, covering the range of molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) from 150 to 800 Da, were evaluated for their productivity as well as for their rejection towards anthocyanins (malvidin-3-O-glucoside, malvidin 3-(acetyl)-glucoside, and malvidin 3-(coumaroyl)-glucoside) and sugars (glucose and fructose) in selected operating conditions. The selected membranes showed differences in their performance in terms of permeate flux and rejection of target compounds. The NFX membrane, with the lowest MWCO (150–300 Da), showed a lower flux decay in comparison to the other investigated membranes. All the membranes showed rejection higher than 99.42% for the quantified anthocyanins. Regarding sugars rejection, the NFX membrane showed the highest rejection for glucose and fructose (100 and 92.60%, respectively), whereas the NFW membrane (MWCO 300–500 Da) was the one with the lowest rejection for these compounds (80.57 and 71.62%, respectively). As a general trend, the tested membranes did not show a preferential rejection of anthocyanins over sugars. Therefore, all tested membranes were suitable for concentration purposes.

Abstract
Saccharide production is critical to the development of biotechnology in the field of food and biofuel. The extraction of saccharide from biomass-based hydrolysate mixtures has become a trend due to low cost and abundant biomass reserves. Compared to conventional methods of fractionation and recovery of saccharides, nanofiltration (NF) has received considerable attention in recent decades because of its high selectivity and low energy consumption and environmental impact. In this review the advantages and challenges of NF based technology in the separation of saccharides are critically evaluated. Hybrid membrane processes, i.e., combining NF with ultrafiltration, can complement each other to provide an efficient approach for removal of unwanted solutes to obtain higher purity saccharides. However, use of NF membrane separation technology is limited due to irreversible membrane fouling that results in high capital and operating costs. Future development of NF membrane technology should therefore focus on improving material stability, antifouling ability and saccharide targeting selectivity, as well as on engineering aspects such as process optimisation and membrane module design.

Abstract
Concentration polarization is intrinsically associated with the selective character of membranes and often means flux decline and which causes a subsequent decrease of ultrafiltration and nanofiltration performance. More important is the fact that it acts as a precursor of membrane fouling and creates severe fouling problems in the longer times range. The quantification of its dependence on the operating parameters of cross-flow velocities and transmembrane pressures makes recourse to the film theory to introduce mass-transfer coefficients that generally are calculated by dimensionless correlations of the Sherwood number as a function of the Reynolds and Schmidt numbers. In the present work, the mass-transfer coefficients are obtained through the fitting of experimental results by the pressure variation method. The ultrafiltration/nanofiltration of the winery wastewaters from the racking operation is carried out with the membranes ETNA 01PP (Alfa Laval) and NF 270 (Dow Filmtec) under a wide range of cross-flow velocities and transmembrane pressures up to 15 bar.
