Removal of Bisphenol A from Aqueous Solution by Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Molecularly Imprinting Microfiltration Membranes Able to Absorb Diethyl Phthalate from Water

In this study, polypropylene porous membranes with an average pore size of 1.25 µm were modified by barrier discharge plasma. Next, molecularly imprinted layers with an imprint of diethyl phthalate (DEP) ware grafted of their surface. In order to optimize the composition of the modifying mixture various solvents, the ratios of functional monomers and the cross-linking monomer as well as various amounts of phthalate were verified. It was shown that the most effective membranes were obtained during polymerization in n-octane with the participation of functional monomers in the ratio 3:7 and the amount of phthalate 7 wt.%. The membranes were tested in the filtration process as well as static and dynamic sorption. In all of these processes, the imprinted membranes showed better properties than those without the imprint. The diethyl phthalate retention coefficient was 36.12% for membranes with a grafting yield of 1.916 mg/cm². On the other hand, DEP static sorption for the imprinted membranes was 3.87 µmol/g higher than for non-imprinted membranes. Also, in the process of dynamic sorption higher values were observed for membranes with the imprint (DS_MIM, 4.12 µmol/g; DS_NIM, 1.18 µmol/g). The membranes were also tested under real conditions. In the process of filtration of tap water contaminated with phthalate, the presence of imprints in the membrane structure resulted in more than three times higher sorption values (3.09 µmol/g) than in the case of non-imprinted membranes (1.12 µmol/g).

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) in Sensors for Environmental and Biomedical Applications: A Review

Molecular imprinted polymers are custom made materials with specific recognition sites for a target molecule. Their specificity and the variety of materials and physical shapes in which they can be fabricated make them ideal components for sensing platforms. Despite their excellent properties, MIP-based sensors have rarely left the academic laboratory environment. This work presents a comprehensive review of recent reports in the environmental and biomedical fields, with a focus on electrochemical and optical signaling mechanisms. The discussion aims to identify knowledge gaps that hinder the translation of MIP-based technology from research laboratories to commercialization.

Membrane Emulsification Process as a Method for Obtaining Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

The membrane emulsification process (ME) using a metallic membrane was the first stage for preparing a spherical and monodisperse thermoresponsive molecularly imprinted polymer (TSMIP). In the second step of the preparation, after the ME process, the emulsion of monomers was then polymerized. Additionally, the synthesized TSMIP was fabricated using as a functional monomer N-isopropylacrylamide, which is thermosensitive. This special type of polymer was obtained for the recognition and determination of trace bisphenol A (BPA) in aqueous media. Two types of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were synthesized using amounts of BPA of 5 wt.% (MIP-2) and 7 wt.% (MIP-1) in the reaction mixtures. Additionally, a non-imprinted polymer (NIP) was also synthesized. Polymer MIP-2 showed thermocontrolled recognition for imprinted molecules and a higher binding capacity than its corresponding non-imprinted polymer and higher than other molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP-1). The best condition for the sorption process was at a temperature of 35 °C, that is, at a temperature close to the phase transition value for poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). Under these conditions, the highest levels of BPA removal from water were achieved and the highest adsorption capacity of MIP-2 was about 0.5 mmol g-1 (about 114.1 mg g-1) and was approximately 20% higher than for MIP-1 and NIP. It was also observed that during the kinetic studies, under these temperature conditions, MIP-2 sorbed BPA faster and with greater efficiency than its non-imprinted analogue.

Facile preparation of microscale hydrogel particles for high efficiency adsorption of bisphenol A from aqueous solution

Hydrogel microparticles (HMPs) were synthesized via reverse emulsion/UV light polymerization and employed as adsorbents for removing bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solution. Results demonstrated the smooth surface of HMPs, with particle size ranging from 137 to 535 μm. Functional groups, including -OH, C-O, C=O, and C-H, are all involved in BPA adsorption confirmed by FTIR. Effect of solution pH, contact time, and initial BPA concentration on adsorption process was examined. The adsorption capacity was found pH independent below pH 8.0 and decreased when pH values greater than 8.0. The maximum adsorption capacity of the HMPs for BPA was 174.77 mg/g. The adsorption process achieved an equilibrium state within 30 min by the pseudo-second-order kinetic rather than the other kinetic models and was fitted well with the Freundlich linear isotherm model. Also, the obtained isotherms reflected the formation of S-type isotherm curve according to Giles's classification. The BPA loaded on the HMPs could be totally regenerated by methanol/dimethylsulfoxide and can be used for five cycles maintaining 100% of adsorption capacity. When the HMPs were applied for the treatment of spiked real surface water, excellent results were also achieved indicating the high efficiency and potential of the adsorbent.

Adsorptive removal of bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solution: A review

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) are an important class of emerging contaminants that have been detected (and are still being detected) in aquatic environments such as surface waters, groundwater, wastewater, runoff, and landfill leachates. Bisphenol A (BPA) is a known endocrine disruptor that is acutely toxic to the living organisms. BPA has been widely used in the manufacture of sunscreen lotions, nail polish, body wash/lotions, bar soaps, shampoo, conditioners, shaving creams, and face lotions/cleanser, besides its other industrial applications. In the present review, an overview of the recent research studies dealing with the BPA removal from water by adsorption method is presented. We have reviewed various conventional and non-conventional adsorbents which have been used for BPA removal from water. It is evident from the literature reviewed that modified adsorbents and composite materials have shown promising results for BPA removal from water. Literature has been extensively discussed in terms of adsorption capacities, fitted isotherm and kinetic models and thermodynamic aspects.

Structured microparticles with tailored properties produced by membrane emulsification

This paper provides an overview of membrane emulsification routes for fabrication of structured microparticles with tailored properties for specific applications. Direct (bottom-up) and premix (top-down) membrane emulsification processes are discussed including operational, formulation and membrane factors that control the droplet size and droplet generation regimes. A special emphasis was put on different methods of controlled shear generation on membrane surface, such as cross flow on the membrane surface, swirl flow, forward and backward flow pulsations in the continuous phase and membrane oscillations and rotations. Droplets produced by membrane emulsification can be used for synthesis of particles with versatile morphology (solid and hollow, matrix and core/shell, spherical and non-spherical, porous and coherent, composite and homogeneous), which can be surface functionalised and coated or loaded with macromolecules, nanoparticles, quantum dots, drugs, phase change materials and high molecular weight gases to achieve controlled/targeted drug release and impart special optical, chemical, electrical, acoustic, thermal and magnetic properties. The template emulsions including metal-in-oil, solid-in-oil-in-water, oil-in-oil, multilayer, and Pickering emulsions can be produced with high encapsulation efficiency of encapsulated materials and narrow size distribution and transformed into structured particles using a variety of solidification processes, such as polymerisation (suspension, mini-emulsion, interfacial and in-situ), ionic gelation, chemical crosslinking, melt solidification, internal phase separation, layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition, particle self-assembly, complex coacervation, spray drying, sol-gel processing, and molecular imprinting. Particles fabricated from droplets produced by membrane emulsification include nanoclusters, colloidosomes, carbon aerogel particles, nanoshells, polymeric (molecularly imprinted, hypercrosslinked, Janus and core/shell) particles, solder metal powders and inorganic particles. Membrane emulsification devices operate under constant temperature due to low shear rates on the membrane surface, which range from (1-10)×10(3) s(-1) in a direct process to (1-10)×10(4) s(-1) in a premix process.
