Effective adsorption of As(V) and V(V) ions from water samples using 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine functionalized sodium dodecyl sulfate-coated magnetite nanoparticles

Removal efficiency of As(III) from aqueous solutions using natural and Fe(III) modified bentonites

Contamination of water with arsenic is a major global health problem. The use of adsorbent materials for the removal of As from aqueous systems is a plausible solution to this problem. In this work, the use of commercial bentonites (purified and modified with iron (III)) for the removal of As from water was studied. The samples were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier Transformed Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms to determine their physicochemical properties. The arsenic removal capacities of adsorbent materials were studied from 1 mg/L solutions of As (III) using the colorimetric technique of molybdenum blue. High adsorption capacity (0.33 mg/g) of As (III) was obtained in aqueous systems after 1 h of treatment with unmodified bentonite. The incorporation of iron improved the removal performance in short times. The obtained results could be the starting point for the development of a low-cost filtration system that contributes to solve the problem of arsenic in water.

Novel synthesis of antibacterial pyrone derivatives using kinetics and mechanism of oxidation of azithromycin by alkaline permanganate

Dimethylamino-2H-5-dihydropyrane-6-methyl-4-one (DADHP) is a novel antibacterial pyrones derivatives and potential pharmaceutical that was quantitatively synthesized by oxidizing azithromycin (AZ) antibiotic with potassium permanganate in an alkaline medium (pH > 12). The oxidation reaction was kinetically studied using spectrophotometric technique at ionic strength equal to 0.02 mol dm^-3. The redox reaction was discovered to have two separate stages that could be measured. The first stage was relatively fast and corresponding to the formation of coordination intermediate complexes involving blue hypomanganate (V) and/or green manganate (VI) transient species. Variable parameters like as the concentration of permanganate ion and AZ substrate, as well as pH and ionic strength, have been studied to see how they affect oxidation rates. The experimental results showed a first-order dependency in [MnO₄^-] and fractional first-order kinetics in each of [AZ] and alkali concentration under pseudo-first-order reaction conditions of [AZ] ≫ 10 [MnO₄^-]. The oxidation process was base-catalyzed, and the oxidation rates increased as the alkali concentration increased. The product was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), elemental analysis, condensation tests with 2,4-dinitrophenyl haydrazine and hydroxyl amine, and GC-Mass. The oxidation product obtained can be employed as interesting class of organic compounds with diverse chemical and pharmacological applications.

Exploring the Potential in LID Technologies for Remediating Heavy Metals in Carwash Wastewater

Carwash wastewater (CWW) can be a significant source of environmental pollution due to the diversity and high concentrations of contaminants it contains. This toxic wastewater can contain several different heavy metals that if left untreated, can enter surface and sub-surface waters. Innovative, nature-based solutions such as low-impact development (LID) technologies may provide an eco-friendly CWW treatment process that is both effective and affordable. This research reviews the available literature to provide definitive values of flowrate and contaminant concentrations found in CWW around the globe. Dividing LID technologies into two groups, vegetated and unvegetated systems, the authors explored the literature for the general performance of these technologies to sustainably treat heavy metals in CWW. Depending on the car wash’s size and intended purpose, whether cleaning vehicles in agriculture-based rural communities, mining, or in high-density urban environments, volumetric flowrates requiring treatment found in six different countries ranged from 35–400 L/car. CWW also contains a wide range of contaminants at various levels, including COD, turbidity, TDS and TSS, surfactants, oils and greases, and heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, zinc, copper, chromium, and iron. Heavy metal removal by both vegetated and unvegetated LIDs shows mixed results in the literature, but given the different processes involved in both types, the authors propose a system that combines these types in order to provide all the necessary removal processes, including mechanical filtration, adsorption, sedimentation, chemical and biological treatment processes.
