Synergistic strippants of Pd (II) ions in the presence of chloride medium from wastewater of electroless plating process via solvating system: Kinetics and thermodynamics study

Effects of membrane content, feed phase, and stripping phase for palladium solution extraction by using a polymer inclusion membrane

Palladium is now frequently utilized in fuel cells, electroplating, electronics, and catalysis. Due to their rarity and high cost, precious metal recovery has taken on a significant role. The extraction method frequently utilized in polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) is both efficient and simple since it has been demonstrated that precious metal adsorption on the membrane significantly controls the mechanism of chemical adsorption. In this study, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a polymer, A336 as a plasticizer, and trioctylamine (TOA) as a carrier were used to produce a PIM by evaporation. After the production of PIMs, palladium extract was studied. The stripping phase, palladium concentration in the feed phase, and components of the membrane were changed to determine the optimum condition with better extraction ability. When 0.5 M of HCl was used, higher kinetic parameter results and higher than 85% extraction efficiency were achieved compared to other concen- trations. When the EDX results were examined, 3.3% palladium was retained on the membrane surface. When the palladium concentration was selected at 2.5 ppm, higher kinetic parameters were observed, and the extraction efficiency was over 90%. The best membrane was the PIM containing 40% PVC-40% A336-20% TOA.

Synergistic effect of arsenic removal from petroleum condensate via liquid-liquid extraction: Thermodynamics, kinetics, DFT and McCabe-Thiele method

This work presents the purification of petroleum condensate by removing arsenic ions via liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). Influence of pure and synergistic extractants is investigated. In terms of the practicability, following parameters are examined: the type of extractant, operating time, and temperature. Response surface methodology is used to design parameters such as organic-aqueous ratio and extractant concentration. Under optimal conditions; a mixture of 1 mol/L HCl and 0.02 mol/L thiourea with an organic/aqueous ratio of 1:4 at 323.15 K for 60 min, the extraction of arsenic reached 78.2 %. Further, batch simulation via two-stage counter-current extraction, and estimation by McCabe-Thiele diagram proved to be enhanced arsenic extraction to 95.3 %. Analysis by FTIR show that arsenic ions in petroleum condensate are formed as triphenylarsine compound ((C6H5)3As). The process of arsenic removal proved to be zero-order endothermic, irreversible and spontaneous reaction. The results obtained from the density functional theory (DFT) confirm that arsenic ions react with the synergistic extractant: effectively forming a covalent bond (As-S).

The elimination of trace arsenic via hollow fiber supported liquid membrane: experiment and mathematical model

This work presents the elimination of arsenic ions from synthetic produced water via hollow fiber supported liquid membrane (HFSLM). Results demonstrate that arsenic ions in synthetic wastewater can be successfully treated to meet the wastewater standard as formulated by the Ministry of Industry and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, Thailand. The discharged limit of arsenic from industrial wastewater must not be greater than 250 ppb. In a single-step operation, arsenic ions are extracted and stripped. Percentages of extraction and stripping proved to be 100% and 98%, respectively. Optimum conditions found proved to be 0.68 M Aliquat 336 dissolved in toluene as the liquid membrane, at pH 12 of feed solution, having a mixture of HCl and thiourea as the synergistic strippant, and flow rates of both feed and strippant solutions of 100 mL/min. A mathematical model, developed to predict the final concentration of arsenic ions in feed and strippant solutions, is seen to fit in well with the experimental results.

Mg17Al12 phase in magnesium alloy waste facilitating the Ni2+ reduction in nickel plating wastewater

A process for recycling Ni²⁺ in Ni-plating wastewater was investigated. This study employed Mg alloy flash waste to reduce the Ni²⁺ in the wastewater into metallic Ni. Fine second-phase Mg₁₇Al₁₂ in a network is the critical point for promoting the reduction reaction of Ni²⁺. The microstructures of the Mg alloy flash scrap and the die-cast Mg alloy scrap waste fulfilled the requirement. The Mg₁₇Al₁₂ is like a catalyst for the quick reduction of the Ni²⁺ ions into pure Ni metal. Contrarily, pure Mg (not containing Mg₁₇Al₁₂ particles) and gravity-cast AZ91D Mg alloy (having coarse Mg₁₇Al₁₂ particles) were not suitable for being used for the Ni²⁺ wastewater treatment. Based on the above results and discussion, using the Mg alloy flash scrap waste for treating the laboratory-made Ni²⁺-containing wastewater, the wastewater initially with ∼5600 ppm of Ni²⁺ ions could be reduced to ∼20 ppm in 2 h. When applying the Mg alloy flash scrap for the Ni plating wastewater from industry, the concentration of Ni²⁺ was able to be reduced from ∼16,670 ppm to ∼1434 ppm in 10 min for the wastewater at 90 °C.
