Recent studies in adsorption of Pb(II), Zn(II) and Co(II) using conventional and modified materials:a review

Effective adsorption of Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution onto ZSM-5 zeolite synthesized from Vietnamese bentonite clay

ZSM-5 zeolite was successfully synthesized from bentonite clay sourced from Lam Dong Province, Vietnam, using the hydrothermal method at 170 °C for 18 h. The synthesized ZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3 ratio ~ 34) exhibited a single phase with high crystallinity (91.8%), and a clear and uniform shape. In a detailed examination of the synthesized material's Pb(II) adsorptive capacity, various factors were taken into account, including pH, interaction time, ionic strength, and the amount of adsorbent. Isotherms and kinetics were examined to elucidate the uptake behavior. Study results suggested that Pb(II) ion uptake by ZSM-5 was most appropriately described by the Sips isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetic models. The calculated maximum monolayer adsorption capacity according to the Langmuir isotherm model was 48.36 mg/g. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) on ZSM-5 involving electrostatic interactions, ion exchange, and diffusion into pores were demonstrated using the analytical techniques before and after Pb(II) adsorption. These findings demonstrate that ZSM-5 synthesized from bentonite clay exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity for Pb(II), resulting in promising applications for treating drinking water or aqueous industrial waste containing Pb(II) ions.

An Anionic Porous Indium-Organic Framework with Nitrogen-Rich Linker for Efficient and Selective Removal of Trace Cationic Dyes

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with porosity and functional adjustability have great potential for the removal of organic dyes in the wastewater. Herein, an anionic porous metal-organic framework (MOFs) [Me₂NH₂]₂In₂[(TATAB)₄(DMF)₄]·(DMF)₄(H₂O)₄ (HDU-1) was synthesized, which is constructed from a [In(OOC)₄]^- cluster and a nitrogen-rich linker H₃TATAB (4,4',4″-s-triazine-1,3,5-triyltri-p-aminobenzoic acid). The negatively charged [In(OOC)₄]^- cluster and uncoordinated -COOH on the linker result in one unit cell of HDU-1 having 8 negative sites. The zeta potential of -20.8 mV dispersed in pure water also shows that HDU-1 possesses negatively charged surface potential. The high electronegativity, water stability, and porosity of HDU-1 can facilitate the ion-exchange and Coulombic interaction. As expected, the HDU-1 exhibits high selectivity and removal rates towards trace cationic dyes with suitable size, such as methylene blue (MB) (96%), Brilliant green (BG) (99.3%), and Victoria blue B (VB) (93.6%).

Mobility of water-soluble aerosol organic matters (WSAOMs) and their effects on soil colloid-mediated transport of heavy metal ions in saturated porous media

Water-soluble aerosol organic matters (WSAOMs) produced by biomass pyrolysis/burning can penetrate subsurface environment, and are anticipated to have a profound effect on the fate of contaminants in aquatic ecosystems. Herein, WSAOMs derived from corn straw (CS-WSAOMs) and pinewood sawdust (PW-WSAOMs) pyrolysis at 300-900 °C were utilized to investigate their mobility characteristics and impacts on the transport of heavy metal ions (i.e., Cd²⁺) in saturated quartz sand with or without soil colloids. This study clearly demonstrated that WSAOMs in subsurface systems exhibited high mobility, which increased as WSAOMs molecular sizes decreased and hydrogen-bond interactions between WSAOMs and sand grains declined. WSAOMs significantly improved heavy metal (i.e., Cd²⁺) and soil colloid-mediated Cd²⁺ mobility in the porous media, which stemmed from the increased binding affinities of colloids toward metal ions and the high mobility of WSAOMs. Interestingly, in terms of the mobility and colloid-facilitated transport of Cd²⁺, WSAOMs from higher pyrolysis temperatures exhibited enhanced effects; meanwhile, the PW-WSAOMs demonstrated stronger effects than the CS-WSAOMs. The trends were mainly attributed to the differences in the metal-binding affinities (e.g., cation-π interactions) and transport abilities of WSAOMs, as well as diverse Cd²⁺ adsorption capacities of colloids induced by various WSAOMs.

Magnetic sporopollenin supported polyaniline developed for removal of lead ions from wastewater: Kinetic, isotherm and thermodynamic studies

This study evaluated the synthesis of novel binary functionaladsorbent based on sporopollenin, magnetic nanoparticles, and polyaniline to produce MSP-PANI. The MSP-PANI was applied to enhance uptake of lead ions (Pb²⁺) from wastewater samples. The functionalities, surface morphology, magnetic properties, and elemental composition of the newly synthesized nanocomposite were investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), vibration sample magnetometer (VSM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. The experimental condition for the adsorption process was MSP/PANI ratio 1:1, pH ∼6, adsorbent dosage 40 mg, and contact time 90 min at room temperature. Under the proposed condition, lead ions removal were obtained as 83%, 88% and 95% for MSPE, PANI, and MSP/PANI, respectively. Based on the experimental and predicted data, the adsorption was corresponded to the psudo-second-order (R² = 0.999) kinetics model, and the adsorption equilibrium corresponded to the Langmuir model (R² = 0.996). Langmuir isotherm showed the maximum adsorption capacity of MSP-PANI for lead ions was 163 mg/g and followed the monolayer pattern. Hence, thermodynamic model under Van't Hoff equation suggested that the adsorption mechanism was physio-sorption with endothermic nature. Therefore, this research can help the researchers to use magnetic nanoparticles for lead removal in highly polluted areas.

Polymeric Biomass Derived Adsorbents for Co(II) Remediation, Recycling and Analysis

The gradual replacement of conventional materials with materials tailored to the green development goals is one of the needs of the day. Correspondingly, this article reviews and integrates, for the first time, the gathered knowledge on the use of the adsorbents based on polymeric biomasses (biosorbents) for a cleaner separation of cobalt (Co) from synthetic and actual solutions. It is a two-part comprehensive approach that debates the Co biosorption potential of bio-based polymers from the perspective of their virtual and real applications for decontamination, recovery, and analytical purposes. First, the removal performances of these materials to batch and fixed column biosorption of Co(II) from mono-component and multi-metallic laboratory solutions are systematized and discussed. Following that, the focus of the first part is shifted to the analytical capabilities of the biosorbents proposed for Co(II) quantification from synthetic solutions. The second section considers the polymeric biomasses successfully incorporated in practical strategies for the removal and recovery of Co(II) from real solutions. The opportunities provided by the use of biosorbents for the development of accurate and greener procedures in Co(II) analysis are also highlighted. The directions in which the research on this topic should be continued and strengthened are suggested.

Facile immobilization of ethylenediamine tetramethylene-phosphonic acid into UiO-66 for toxic divalent heavy metal ions removal: An experimental and theoretical exploration

By the facile immobilization of ethylenediamine tetramethylene-phosphonic acid (EDTMPA) onto the surface and into the defects of UiO-66, a stable and efficient adsorbent named UiO-66-EDTMPA was obtained for the first time. In terms of removing aqueous heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺), the maximum adsorption capacities of UiO-66-EDTMPA reached 558.67, 271.34 and 210.89 mg/g, which were 8.77 (Pb²⁺), 5.63 (Cd²⁺) and 5.19 (Cu²⁺) times higher than raw UiO-66 respectively. The adsorption behavior of three heavy metal ions on UiO-66 and UiO-66-EDTMPA were investigated and compared through batch control experiments and theoretical studies. The main factors on adsorption progress (i.e., the dosage of EDTMPA, pH, ionic strength, co-existing ions, initial concentration, contact time, temperature) were explored, and the critical characterization (i.e., SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTG, XPS, N₂ adsorption-desorption test) were performed. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation (radial distribution functions (RDF) and mean square displacement (MSD)) were also applied to reveal the adsorption behavior. Besides, two new quantum chemical analyses (Hirshfeld surface and independent gradient model (IGM)) were introduced into the interaction analysis between UiO-66 and EDTMPA. The complete results showed that (1) where the hydrogen bond and (vdW) connect EDTMPA to UiO-66. (2) The coordination between O, N atoms of EDTMPA and heavy metal ions (Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺) resulted in spontaneous adsorption. (3) The adsorption behavior agreed with Langmuir and pseudo-second-order model, endothermic reaction. In addition, the desorption and reusability study showed promising stable and sustainable performance. This work has some guiding significance for the experimental and theoretical study of removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions by MOF or modified MOF materials.

Functionalised electrospun membranes (TETA-PVC) for the removal of lead(ii) from water

Driven by the need for delivering sustainable water purification solutions for the removal of heavy metals from water, electrospun PVC membranes were functionalised with triethylenetetramine (TETA) and were used to remove lead(ii) ions selectively from water. The membranes were characterised and their adsorption behavior towards the removal of lead from water was investigated. The incorporation of TETA on the membrane's surface significantly improved the removal efficiency of lead(ii) up to 99.8% in 30 minutes and under ambient conditions, with the lowest concentration of 50 ppm. The adsorption mechanism was investigated and kinetic data showed a better correlation with the pseudo-second-order model. Similarly, the equilibrium data best fitted with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a relatively high maximum adsorption capacity of 1250 mg g⁻¹ for lead(ii) ions, larger than recently reported adsorption capacities for similar membranes. The functionalised membrane also showed high selectivity to lead(ii) in a mixed solution containing lead(ii), mercury(ii), cadmium(ii), arsenic(iii), copper(ii), and zinc(ii). The functionalised membrane was regenerated, where desorption of lead(ii) was achieved, under mildly acidic conditions. The removal efficiency of the regenerated membrane after six cycles of adsorption/desorption was maintained at a high level of 98%. The proposed design offers a simple yet effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly solution for water treatment.

Driven by the need for delivering sustainable water purification solutions for the removal of heavy metals from water, TETA functionalised electrospun PVC membranes were fabricated and used to remove lead(ii) ions selectively from water.

Natural, low-cost adsorbents for toxic Pb(II) ion sequestration from (waste)water: A state-of-the-art review

Pb(II) ions is an inorganic pollutant that is present in the environment. Its presence affects both human health and ecosystem. Economically, amongst many wastewater treatment approaches, adsorption is both cheap and environmentally friendly for removing Pb(II) ion from contaminated water. In this state of the art review, about 227 research and review based publications on adsorption-based studies between 1989 and 2021, which have used various materials as adsorbents of Pb (II) ions, were selected and reviewed for more evaluation. A number of adsorbents which have been reported in these literatures for the adsorption of Pb(II) ion are agrobased, modified agrobased, clay minerals, modified/nanocomposite clay minerals, silica-based, zeolite-based and chitosan-based adsorbents, respectively. The adsorption potential of the adsorbents is exhibited under optimum experimental conditions. The unmodified and modified agro based adsorbents were shown to exhibit the greatest Pb(II) adsorption capacity, with great potential for further exploration, compared to the others afore-listed. The effects of operating parameters such as pH, initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dose and reaction time are discussed. Furthermore, in order to comprehend the nature of adsorption process between the adsorbent and contaminant (Pb(II)), thermodynamic analyses of adsorption systems are intensively described. All these discussions revealed the applicability of adsorption process for toxic Pb(II) ions removal with respect to wastewater treatment techniques. The review concludes by commenting on the various adsorbents' adsorption capacity and proposes some studies that should also be considered in future works.

Central Composite Design for Adsorption of Pb(II) and Zn(II) Metals on PKM-2 Moringa oleifera Leaves

Biosorption is a very effective technique to eliminate the heavy metals present in the wastewater that utilize nongrowing biomass. The adsorption ability of the Periyakulam-2 (PKM-2) variety of Moringa Oleifera leaves (MOLs) to eliminate Pb(II) and Zn(II) ions from an aqueous solution was examined in this work. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, X-ray powder diffraction, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods were used to characterize the PKM-2 variety of MOLs. The set of variables consists of the metal ion initial concentration, a dosage of the adsorbent, and pH were optimized with the help of the response surface methodology to get maximum metal removal efficiency of lead and zinc metals using the PKM-2 MOL biosorbent. A maximum Pb(II) removal of 95.6% was obtained under the condition of initial concentration of metal ions 38 mg/L, a dosage of the adsorbent 1.5 g, and pH 4.7, and a maximum zinc removal of 89.35% was obtained under the condition of initial concentration of metal ions 70 mg/L, a dosage of the adsorbent 0.6 g, and pH 3.2. The presence of lead and zinc ions on the biosorbent surface and the functional groups involved in the adsorption process were revealed using EDX and FTIR analysis, respectively. The adsorption data were evaluated by employing different isotherm and kinetic models. Among the isotherm models, Langmuir's isotherm showed that the best fit and maximum adsorption capacities are 51.71 and 38.50 mg/g for lead and zinc, respectively. Kinetic studies showed accordance with the pseudo-second-order model to lead and zinc metal adsorption. Thermodynamic parameters confirmed (ΔG° < 0, ΔH° < 0, and ΔS° > 0) that the sorption mechanism is physisorption, exothermic, spontaneous, and favorable for adsorption. The results from this study show that the MOL of the PKM-2 type is a promising alternative for an ecofriendly, low-cost biosorbent that can effectively remove lead and zinc metals from aqueous solutions.

Magnetic and electric field accelerate Phytoextraction of copper Lemna minor duckweed

In accordance with the opinion of the World Health Organization and the World Water Council the development of effective technologies for the treatment of wastewater from heavy metals for their discharge into water bodies or reuse is an urgent task nowadays. Phytoremediation biotechnologies is the most environmentally friendly and cheapest way of the treatment of wastewater, suitable for sustainable development principals. The main disadvantage of the phytoremediation is the slow speed of the process. A method for accelerating the process of phytoremediation by the combined effect of magnetic and weak electric fields is proposed. The purpose of this study is to determine the values of the parameters of the magnetic and weak electric fields that are most suitable for extracting cuprum ions from wastewater using the higher aqua plants (Lemna minor). A corresponding technological process based on the results of the study is proposed. The results have shown that the removal of copper cations from sulfate solutions effectively occurs in the initial period of time (1–5 hours) under the influence of a magnetic field with an intensity of H = 2 kA/m. Under the combined influence of an electrical current with density j = 240 μA/cm² and a magnetic field (H = 2 kA/m) the highest rate of copper extraction by duckweed leaves is achieved. Under these conditions, the greatest growth and development of plant leaves occurs. The paper presents the results of determining of the parameters of the electrochemical release from the eluate of the spent phytomass of duckweed. It has been determined that the release of metal occurs at E = 0.32 V. An original scheme for wastewater treatment from copper with subsequent separation of copper from the spent phytomass of duckweed is proposed. In general, the presented results are a scientific justification of wastewater treatment technologies and a contribution to resolving the crisis in the field of fresh water supply. An important contribution in the circular economy is a technology recommendation proposed for recovering copper from duckweed after wastewater treatment.

Effects of Electronegativity and Hydration Energy on the Selective Adsorption of Heavy Metal Ions by Synthetic NaX Zeolite

The adsorption capacity of synthetic NaX zeolite for Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ in single and multi-component systems were investigated. The effects of electronegativity and hydration energy on the selective adsorption, as well as potential selective adsorption mechanism of the NaX zeolite for Pb²⁺, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ were also discussed. The maximum adsorption capacity order of the heavy metals in the single system was Pb²⁺ > Cd²⁺ > Cu²⁺ > Zn²⁺, and this could be related to their hydration energy and electronegativity. The values of the separation factors (α) and affinity constant (K_EL) in different binary systems indicated that Pb²⁺ was preferentially adsorbed, and Zn²⁺ presented the lowest affinity for NaX zeolite. The selective adsorption capacities of the metals were in the order, Pb²⁺ > Cd²⁺ ≈ Cu²⁺ > Zn²⁺. The trend for the selective adsorption of NaX zeolite in ternary and quaternary systems was consistent with that in the binary systems. Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ reduced the stability of the Si-O-Al bonds and the double six-membered rings in the NaX framework, due to the high electronegativity of Pb²⁺ and Cu²⁺ than that of Al³⁺. The selective adsorption mechanism of NaX zeolite for the high electronegative metal ions could mainly result from the negatively charged O in the Si-O-Al structure of the NaX zeolite, hence heavy metal ions with high electronegativity display a strong affinity for the electron cloud of the oxygen atoms in the Si-O-Al. This study could evaluate the application and efficiency of zeolite in separating and recovering certain metal ions from industrial wastewater.
