Hydrogen Bubbles: Harmonizing Local Hydrogen Transfer for Efficient Plastic Hydro-Depolymerization

Hydro-depolymerization presents a promising avenue for transforming plastic waste into high-value hydrocarbons, offering significant potential for value-added recycling. However, a major challenge in this method arises from kinetic limitations due to insufficient hydrogen concentration near the active sites, requiring optimal catalytic performance only at higher hydrogen pressures. In this study, we address this hurdle by developing "hydrogen bubble catalysts" featuring Ru nanoparticles within mesoporous SBA-15 channels (Ru/SBA). The distinctive feature of Ru/SBA catalysts lies in their capacity for physical hydrogen storage and chemically reversible hydrogen spillover, ensuring a timely and ample hydrogen supply. Under identical reaction conditions, the catalytic activity of Ru/SBA surpassed that of Ru/SiO2 (no hydrogen storage capacity) by over 4-fold. This substantial enhancement in catalytic performance provides significant opportunities for near atmospheric pressure hydro-depolymerization of plastic waste.

Coupled conversion of polyethylene and carbon dioxide catalyzed by a zeolite-metal oxide system

Zeolite-catalyzed polyethylene (PE) aromatization achieves reduction of the aromatic yield via hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions. The hydrogen required for CO2 hydrogenation can be provided by H radicals formed during aromatization. In this study, we efficiently convert PE and CO2 into aromatics and CO using a zeolite-metal oxide catalyst (HZSM-5 + CuZnZrOx) at 380°C and under hydrogen- and solvent-free reaction conditions. Hydrogen, derived from the aromatization of PE over HZSM-5, diffuses through the Brønsted acidic sites of the zeolite to the adjacent CuZnZrOx, where it is captured in situ by CO2 to produce bicarbonate and further hydrogenated to CO. This favors aromatization while inhibiting hydrogenation and secondary hydrogenolysis reactions. An aromatic yield of 62.5 wt % is achieved, of which 60% consisted of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). The conversion of CO2 reaches values as high as 0.55 mmol gPE-1. This aromatization-hydrogen capture pathway provides a feasible scheme for the comprehensive utilization of waste plastics and CO2.

Mechanism Study of Organic Sulfur Hydrogenation over Pt- and Pd-Loaded Alumina-Based Catalysts

The hydrogenation of organic sulfur (CS2) present in industrial off-gases to produce sulfur-free hydrocarbons and H2S can be achieved by using noble-metal catalysts. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive investigation into the underlying reaction mechanisms associated with this process. In this study, we have conducted an in-depth examination of the activity and selectivity of Pt- and Pd-loaded alumina-based catalysts, revealing significant disparities between them. Notably, Pd/Al2O3 catalysts exhibit an enhanced performance at low temperatures. Furthermore, we have observed that CS2 displays a higher propensity for conversion to methane when employing Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, while Pd/Al2O3 catalysts demonstrate a greater tendency for coke deposition. By combining experimental observations with theoretical calculations, we revealed that the capability of H2 spillover along with the adsorption capacity of CS2, play pivotal roles in determining the observed differences. Moreover, the key intermediate species involved in the methanation and coke pathways were identified. The intermediate CH2S* is found to be crucial in the methanation pathway, while the intermediate CSH* is identified as significant in the coke pathway.

Water-assisted hydrogen spillover in Pt nanoparticle-based metal-organic framework composites

Hydrogen spillover is the migration of activated hydrogen atoms from a metal particle onto the surface of catalyst support, which has made significant progress in heterogeneous catalysis. The phenomenon has been well researched on oxide supports, yet its occurrence, detection method and mechanism on non-oxide supports such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) remain controversial. Herein, we develop a facile strategy for efficiency enhancement of hydrogen spillover on various MOFs with the aid of water molecules. By encapsulating platinum (Pt) nanoparticles in MOF-801 for activating hydrogen and hydrogenation of C=C in the MOF ligand as activated hydrogen detector, a research platform is built with Pt@MOF-801 to measure the hydrogenation region for quantifying the efficiency and spatial extent of hydrogen spillover. A water-assisted hydrogen spillover path is found with lower migration energy barrier than the traditional spillover path via ligand. The synergy of the two paths explains a significant boost of hydrogen spillover in MOF-801 from imperceptible existence to spanning at least 100-nm-diameter region. Moreover, such strategy shows universality in different MOF and covalent organic framework materials for efficiency promotion of hydrogen spillover and improvement of catalytic activity and antitoxicity, opening up new horizons for catalyst design in porous crystalline materials.

Exceptional Hydrogen Diffusion Rate over Ru Nanoparticle-Doped Polar MgO(111) Surface

Hydrogen (H) conductivity on oxide-based materials is crucially important in fuel cells and related catalysis. Here, this work measures the diffusion rate of H generated from Ru nanoparticles loaded on polar MgO(111) facet particles under H₂ at elevated temperatures without moisture and compares it to conventional nonpolar MgO(110) for the first time by in situ quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). The QENS reveals an exceptional diffusion rate on the polar facet via a proton (H⁺ ) hopping mechanism, which is an order of magnitude superior to that of typical H⁺ -conducting oxides. This work attributes this to the unique atomic arrangement of alternate layers of Mg cations and O anions of the polar MgO(111) where the strong electrostatic field of terminal oxygen anions facilitates protonic migration with a lower degree of local covalency.

Direct observation of accelerating hydrogen spillover via surface-lattice-confinement effect

Uncovering how hydrogen transfers and what factors control hydrogen conductivity on solid surface is essential for enhancing catalytic performance of H-involving reactions, which is however hampered due to the structural complexity of powder catalysts, in particular, for oxide catalysts. Here, we construct stripe-like MnO(001) and grid-like Mn₃O₄(001) monolayers on Pt(111) substrate and investigate hydrogen spillover atop. Atomic-scale visualization demonstrates that hydrogen species from Pt diffuse unidirectionally along the stripes on MnO(001), whereas it exhibits an isotropic pathway on Mn₃O₄(001). Dynamic surface imaging in H₂ atmosphere reveals that hydrogen diffuses 4 times more rapidly on MnO than the case on Mn₃O₄, which is promoted by one-dimension surface-lattice-confinement effect. Theoretical calculations indicate that a uniform and medium O-O distance favors hydrogen diffusion while low-coordinate surface O atom inhibits it. Our work illustrates the surface-lattice-confinement effect of oxide catalysts on hydrogen spillover and provides a promising route to improve the hydrogen spillover efficiency.

Ordered Mesopore Confined Pt Nanoclusters Enable Unusual Self-Enhancing Catalysis

As an important kind of emerging heterogeneous catalyst for sustainable chemical processes, supported metal cluster (SMC) catalysts have received great attention for their outstanding activity; however, the easy aggregation of metal clusters due to their migration along the substrate's surface usually deteriorates their activity and even causes catalyst failure during cycling. Herein, stable Pt nanoclusters (NCs, ∼1.06 nm) are homogeneously confined in the uniform spherical mesopores of mesoporous titania (mpTiO2) by the interaction between Pt NCs and metal oxide pore walls made of polycrystalline anatase TiO2. The obtained Pt-mpTiO2 exhibits excellent stability with well-retained CO conversion (∼95.0%) and Pt NCs (∼1.20 nm) in the long term water-gas shift (WGS) reaction. More importantly, the Pt-mpTiO2 displays an unusual increasing activity during the cyclic catalyzing WGS reaction, which was found to stem from the in situ generation of interfacial active sites (Ti3+-Ov-Ptδ+) by the reduction effect of spillover hydrogen generated at the stably supported Pt NCs. The Pt-mpTiO2 catalysts also show superior performance toward the selective hydrogenation of furfural to 2-methylfuran. This work discloses an efficient and robust Pt-mpTiO2 catalyst and systematically elucidates the mechanism underlying its unique catalytic activity, which helps to design stable SMC catalysts with self-enhancing interfacial activity in sustainable heterogeneous catalysis.

Insights into Palladium Deactivation during Advanced Oxidation Processes

A key step in creating efficient and long-lasting catalysts is understanding their deactivation mechanism(s). On this basis, the behavior of a series of Pd/corundum materials during several hydrogen adsorption/desorption cycles was studied using temperature-programmed desorption coupled with mass spectrometry and aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. The materials, prepared by impregnation and by sputtering, presented uniform well-dispersed Pd nanoparticles. In addition, single atoms and small clusters of Pd were only detected in the materials prepared by impregnation. Upon exposure to hydrogen, the Pd nanoparticles smaller than 2 nm and the single atoms did not present any change, while the larger ones presented a core-shell morphology, where the core was Pd and the shell was PdH _x . The results suggest that the long-term activity of the materials prepared by impregnation can be attributed solely to the presence of small clusters and single atoms of Pd.

Hydrogen spillover assisted by oxygenate molecules over nonreducible oxides

Spontaneous migration of atomic hydrogen species from metal particles to the surface of their support, known as hydrogen spillover, has been claimed to play a major role in catalytic processes involving hydrogen. While this phenomenon is well established on reducible oxide supports, its realization on much more commonly used non-reducible oxides is still challenged. Here we present a general strategy to enable effective hydrogen spillover over non-reducible SiO₂ with aid of gaseous organic molecules containing a carbonyl group. By using hierarchically-porous-SiO₂-supported bimetallic Pt-Fe catalysts with Pt nanoparticles exclusively deposited into the micropores, we demonstrate that activated hydrogen species generated on the Pt sites within the micropores can be readily transported by these oxygenate molecules to Fe sites located in macropores, leading to significantly accelerated hydrodeoxygenation rates on the latter sites. This finding provides a molecule-assisted approach to the rational design and optimization of multifunctional heterogeneous catalysts, reminiscent of the role of molecular coenzymes in bio-catalysis.

Spontaneous migration of H-atoms from metal particles to a nonreducible oxide support is generally limited by thermodynamics. Here, small oxygenate molecules are found to act as effective H-carriers to promote this process and lead to much improved hydrodeoxygenation rates on Pt-Fe/SiO₂ catalysts.

Oxygen-Atom Defect Formation in Polyoxovanadate Clusters via Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

The uptake of hydrogen atoms (H-atoms) into reducible metal oxides has implications in catalysis and energy storage. However, outside of computational modeling, it is difficult to obtain insight into the physicochemical factors that govern H-atom uptake at the atomic level. Here, we describe oxygen-atom vacancy formation in a series of hexavanadate assemblies via proton-coupled electron transfer, presenting a novel pathway for the formation of defect sites at the surface of redox-active metal oxides. Kinetic investigations reveal that H-atom transfer to the metal oxide surface occurs through concerted proton–electron transfer, resulting in the formation of a transient V^III–OH₂ moiety that, upon displacement of the water ligand with an acetonitrile molecule, forms the oxygen-deficient polyoxovanadate-alkoxide cluster. Oxidation state distribution of the cluster core dictates the affinity of surface oxido ligands for H-atoms, mirroring the behavior of reducible metal oxide nanocrystals. Ultimately, atomistic insights from this work provide new design criteria for predictive proton-coupled electron-transfer reactivity of terminal M=O moieties at the surface of nanoscopic metal oxides.

Rapid Interchangeable Hydrogen, Hydride, and Proton Species at the Interface of Transition Metal Atom on Oxide Surface

Hydrogen spillover is the phenomenon where a hydrogen atom, generated from the dissociative chemisorption of dihydrogen on the surface of a metal species, migrates from the metal to the catalytic support. This phenomenon is regarded as a promising avenue for hydrogen storage, yet the atomic mechanism for how the hydrogen atom can be transferred to the support has remained controversial for decades. As a result, the development of catalytic support for such a purpose is only limited to typical reducible oxide materials. Herein, by using a combination of in situ spectroscopic and imaging technique, we are able to visualize and observe the atomic pathway for which hydrogen travels via a frustrated Lewis pair that has been constructed on a nonreducible metal oxide. The interchangeable status between the hydrogen, proton, and hydride is carefully characterized and demonstrated. It is envisaged that this study has opened up new design criteria for hydrogen storage material.

Transformation of atomically dispersed platinum in SAPO-37 into platinum clusters: catalyst for ethylene hydrogenation

Atomically dispersed supported platinum catalysts were synthesized by the reaction of Pt(acac)2 (acac = acetylacetonato) with the silicoaluminophosphate molecular sieve SAPO-37, with infrared spectra showing that the reaction involved SAPO OH groups.
