Abstract
BACKGROUND Infertility in men causes problems in various aspects of their lives, including personal, family and social life. One of the most important of these problems is anxiety. Anxiety in infertile men can affect their health, quality of life, and response to treatment, highlighting the significance of anxiety in these men. Thus, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to investigate the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in infertile men. METHODS To conduct this review study, two researchers independently searched international databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of sciences, Scopus, PsyINFO, and the Google scholar search engine in English without considering any time limit until January 2, 2024. Keywords such as "anxiety," "infertility," "prevalence," and "epidemiology" were used, taking into account the specific search method of each database. Using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS), the quality of the articles was evaluated by two researchers independently. RESULTS In the systematic part of the study, 27 studies were included, and given the variety of measurement tools (8 different tools) used to investigate anxiety symptoms in infertile men, 24 studies were analyzed in five subgroups of tools. The pooled prevalence of anxiety symptoms in infertile men was 21.37% (95% CI: 15.73-27.02). The lowest and highest prevalence of anxiety in infertile men were related to the Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) and Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS), accounting for 7.08% (95% CI: 3.27-10.90) and 34.90% (95%CI: 28.90-40.90) values respectively. This prevalence was 19.80% (95%CI: 9.01-30.59) for the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), 30.06% (95%CI: 18.59-41.52) for the Spielberger Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-T), and 18.52% (95%CI: 7.76-29.29) for the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS). CONCLUSION The results of this systematic review and meta-analysis indicated that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms in infertile men requires special attention to healthcare planning. The healthcare system of different countries should evaluate the symptoms of anxiety in infertile men and take appropriate measures to reduce them according to the culture of the countries. It is recommended that all infertile couples be assessed for anxiety symptoms using a standardized tool during their initial evaluation.

Abstract
The present study aimed to examine the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on infertile patients. We adopted a comparison design and searched articles published from 1 September 2016 to 31 December 2019 as the control group, while articles published from 1 January 2020 to 31 April 2023 were treated as the pandemic group. Specifically, Web of Science, PubMed, Medline, PsycArticle, CNKI and PsycINFO were searched to identify potential eligible records. Risk of bias was assessed, and random-effects meta-analyses were conducted to estimate the prevalence of specific mental health problems. Forty studies with a total of 19,480 participants were included in the analysis. The pooled prevalence of anxiety in the pandemic group was significantly higher than that in the control group. The depression and stress prevalence in the pandemic group was higher than that in the control group, yet did not reach statistical significance. A subgroup analysis revealed region differences with developed countries exhibiting higher rates of anxiety and depression in the pandemic group, but the result was the opposite in the control group. Physiological factors, psychological factors and social factors correlated with infertile patients' mental health were identified. The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant negative impact on infertile patients' mental health, emphasizing the importance of ways to mitigate the risks during the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To establish a rat model that accurately replicates the clinical characteristics of male infertility (MI) with Liver Depression and Kidney Deficiency (LD & KD) and investigate the pathogenesis. METHODS After subjecting the rats to chronic restraint stress (CRS) and adenine treatment, a series of tests were conducted, including ethological assessments, evaluations of reproductive characteristics, measurements of biochemical parameters, histopathological examinations, and analyses of urinary metabolites. Additionally, bioinformatics predictions were performed for comprehensive analysis. RESULTS Compared to the control, the model exhibited significant manifestations of MI with LD & KD, including reduced responsiveness, diminished frequency of capturing estrous female rats, and absence of mounting behavior. Additionally, the kidney coefficient increased markedly, while the coefficients of the testis and epididymis decreased significantly. Sperm counts and viabilities decreased notably, accompanied by an increase in sperm abnormalities. Dysregulation of reproductive hormone levels in the serum was observed, accompanied by an upregulation of proinflammatory cytokines expressions in the liver and kidney, as well as exacerbated oxidative stress in the penile corpus cavernosum and testis. The seminiferous tubules in the testis exhibited a loose arrangement, loss of germ cells, and infiltration of inflammatory cells. Furthermore, utilizing urinary metabolomics and bioinformatics analysis, 5 key biomarkers and 2 crucial targets most closely linked to MI were revealed. CONCLUSION The study successfully established a clinically relevant animal model of MI with LD & KD. It elucidates the pathogenesis of the condition, identifies key biomarkers and targets, and provides a robust scientific foundation for the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of MI with LD & KD.

Abstract
Infertility is a significant problem influencing many couples. Our purpose was to assess the field of infertility in Obstetrics and Gynecology from 1955 to 2022 reviewing 3575 documents found in the Web of Science database. Most articles were in the areas of Reproductive Biology, Fertility, Endometriosis & Hysterectomy, and Chromosome Disorders. We found publication has increased dramatically since 1989. Agarwal, Thomas, and Sharma; United States, England, and Canada; Fertility and Sterility, Human Reproduction, and AJOG were the most-cited authors, countries, and journals, respectively. We discovered five substantive clusters: male infertility factors, female infertility factors, causes and treatment of infertility, the consequence of infertility, and assisted reproductive techniques. Using bibliometric review (Co-citation analysis) six research areas were found: semen analysis and sperm morphology, regional differences in the psychological effects of infertility, unexplained infertility, endometriosis, diagnosis and treatment of infertility, and polycystic ovary syndrome. Despite advances in understanding infertility, further research is needed.

Abstract
This study compares the rate of selected types of mental illnesses (stress, anxiety, depression) and sleep disorders (insomnia, sleep apnea) according to the status of eight male genital problems. Analyses utilize medical claims data for male employees aged 18 to 64 years of a large corporation, 2017 to 2021. Approximately 1,076 (7.3%) men per year have one or more genital problems. The most common being benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH; 3.8%) and then erectile dysfunction (ED; 1.7%). For BPH patients, the rate experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, or a combination of these is 0.96%, 6.2%, 5.3%, and 5.1%, respectively. Corresponding rates for ED are 1.5%, 7.2%, 5.9%, and 7.5%. For BPH patients, the rate experiencing insomnia, sleep apnea, or both is 3.1%, 22.7%, and 2.0%, respectively. Corresponding rates for ED are 1.2%, 20.6%, and 2.2%. Male genital problems positively associate with having one or more mental illnesses (stress, anxiety, depression), except for hydrocele, with ED and penis disorder having the strongest associations. Male genital problems also positively associate with having insomnia and/or sleep apnea, except for infertility and orchitis, with BPH and ED having the strongest associations. The positive associations involving BPH and ED with mental illnesses are each more pronounced in the younger age group (18-49 vs. 50-64). Similar results are seen in the models involving sleep disorders. Thus, comorbid male genital problems, mental illnesses, and sleep disorders exist, with the strength of associations unique to the male genital problem and sometimes modified by age.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Generally, infertile men hide their depression, which can threaten their health and lower their quality of life. Given the role of depression and its impact on people's health, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the prevalence of depression in infertile men. METHODS This research is a systematic review and meta-analysis based on preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). Using the keywords of "Depression", "Emotional Depression", "Infertility", "Prevalence", and "Epidemiology", all English language articles were searched in international databases (PubMed, Cochran library, Web of sciences, Scopus, Embase, PsyINFO, and Google scholar) by two reviewers independently and without considering the time limit until September 2022. Title, abstract, full text and quality of each study were evaluated by two reviewers independently using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale checklist. The results were analyzed using programming language and R software, and I2 test and Egger's Test were used to check heterogeneity and publication bias, respectively. RESULTS Twenty-two studies were included in the systematic part of this study; and 8 different measurement tools were used to identify depression. Then, based on the possibility of meta-analysis, 18 studies were included in 4 subgroups. Given the heterogeneity of the articles, random effect model was used. The overall prevalence of depression in infertile men was 18.30%. The lowest and highest overall prevalence of depression in men was reported to be 14.04% and 23.63% in the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (ZDS) and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) tools, respectively. The overall prevalence of depression among infertile men was reported to be 18.55% and 16.75% using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) tools, respectively. CONCLUSION Based on the findings of this study, the significant prevalence of depression in infertile men requires a specific attention and planning. The study revealed varying degrees of depression among infertile men, emphasizing the importance of assessing their mental health, specifically in terms of depression, during infertility treatments as a hidden variable. It is strongly recommended to develop training programs for health service providers to effectively utilize diagnostic tools in this particular field.

Abstract
Depression in mammals is known to be associated with poor reproductive capacity. In males, it has been associated with decreased efficiency of spermatogenesis as well as the production of spermatozoa of reduced structural and functional integrity. Although antidepressants are effective in correcting depressive states, there is controversy regarding their effectiveness in restoring male reproductive function. Here, using an animal model of depression induced by a forced swim test, we confirmed that depression is accompanied by impaired male reproductive function. We further show that administration of a conventional antidepressant of the serotonin reuptake inhibitor class (paroxetine) impairs male reproductive performance in terms of sperm production and quality when administered to healthy animals. Intriguingly, when paroxetine is administered to "depressed" animals, it resulted in a complete restoration of the animal's ability to produce sperm that appears to be as capable of meeting the parameters evaluated here as those of control animals. The one-carbon cycle (1CC) is one of the most important metabolic cycles that include the methionine and folate cycles and plays a major role in DNA synthesis, amino acids, and also the production of antioxidants. Our results show that depression affects the main components of this cycle and paroxetine on healthy mice increases homocysteine levels, decreases glycine and vitamin B12, while in depressed mice, it increases folate levels and decreases vitamin B12. Thus, paroxetine exerts negative impacts on male reproductive function when administered to healthy animals and it well correlate with the altered sperm parameters and functions of depressed animals, and its mechanism remains to be explored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Despite the development of diagnosis and treatment methods, the psychological effects of infertility on women were not adequately addressed. This study investigated the effect of male and female factor infertility on women's anxiety, depression, self-esteem, quality of life, and sexual function parameters. METHODS In this prospective, cross-sectional study, 480 women [n = 234, with male factor infertility (MFI) (MFI group) and n = 246, with female factor infertility (FFI) (FFI group)], who could not conceive despite unprotected intercourse for 1 year, and 242 fertile healthy women (control group) who had children within the last 1 year were included. Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES), Fertility Quality of Life (FertiQol) and Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaires were used for patients' evaluation. RESULTS RSES, BAI and BDI-II scores were significantly higher and FSFI score was significantly lower in the FFI group compared to other groups. RSES, BAI and BDI-II scores were also significantly higher and FSFI score was significantly lower in the MFI group compared to the control group. FertiQol total score was significantly lower in the FFI group compared to the MFI group. RSES score was positively correlated with BDI-II and BAI scores; however, it was negatively correlated with FertiQol and FSFI scores. CONCLUSIONS The negative psychological effects of infertility are ignored by many centres, especially in the treatment process of infertility. Regardless of the infertility factor (male or female), we believe that psychological support should be given to all women to improve their life quality.

Baicalin Attenuates Continuous Activation of β-Catenin Induced by Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and Depression Complicated by Infertility in Male Rats. Abstract
Background Baicalin (BA) is a potential candidate drug to inhibit depressive behavior. However, the mechanism of BA's role on depression complicated with male infertility (DCMI) is still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of BA in alleviating inflammatory factor-induced DCMI by regulating β-catenin. Methods Firstly, we performed sucrose preference test (SPT), open field test (OFT), tail suspension test (TST), and forced swim test (FST) in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) + lipopolysaccharide (LPS) model rats to study the effect of BA on depressive behavior. The levels of neuropeptide Y (NPY), testosterone (T), and IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-4 in the peripheral blood plasma of normal people, patients with depression, and patients with DCMI were measured. Then, the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-4, β-catenin in rat testis and peripheral blood and ANXA2, APP, SEMG1, and SEMG2 in seminal plasma proteins were examined. Moreover, the level of β-catenin in the testicular tissue was detected. LPS was used to treat Sertoli cells, and the level of β-catenin was detected. Finally, we evaluated the reproductive phenotype and sperm motility of rats. Results BA (especially 100 mg/kg) could notably ameliorate depression-like behavior induced by CUMS + LPS. The levels of IL-4, IL-10, T, and NPY in depression patients, DCMI patients, and CUMS + LPS model rats elevated, while the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were reduced. However, BA alleviated the changes in these factors. Moreover, BA alleviated male rat depression induced by CUMS + LPS. LPS upregulated β-catenin (NP) but could not adjust β-catenin (TP) level in rat Sertoli cells. BA relieved the symptoms of DCMI by regulating β-catenin. Furthermore, BA ameliorated the reproductive ability of depressed rats. Conclusion BA modulated β-catenin in the relief of inflammatory factor-induced DCMI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Infertility represents a peculiar social burden affecting more than 15% of couples, provoking it a real threat to the general quality of life and to the sexual health. The medicalization (diagnosis, therapy and follow up) of the lack of fertility is frequently a challenge in term of personal and couple's involvement. In particular, while the Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) has allowed many infertile couples to achieve pregnancy, the therapeutic process faced by the couple bears a strong psychological stress that can affect the couple's quality of life, relationship and sexuality. Despite infertility affects both female and male sexual health, only recently the interest in the effects of ART on the couple's sexuality has grown, especially for women. METHODS A literature research on the sexual dysfunction in fertility care and particularly in ART setting was performed. RESULTS Literature largely found that intimacy and sexuality appear specifically impaired by intrusiveness of treatments and medical prescriptions. Moreover, there is a close relationship between emotional, psychological and sexual aspects, which can be integrated in the new concept of Inferto-Sex Syndrome (ISS) that can impair the ART treatment outcomes. Evidence demonstrates that the assessment of sexual function is necessary in couples undergoing diagnosis of infertility and ART. CONCLUSION A close relationship between infertility and sexuality, both in the female and male partners, was detected. ART treatments may heavily impact on the couple's psychosexual health. A couple-centred program for the integrated management of psychological and sexual dysfunction should be considered in the context of ART programs.

Abstract
An increasing number of studies show declining sperm counts; however, semen analyses are uncommon until the evaluation for infertility. Semen analysis is a safe, reliable and relatively inexpensive screening test, assessing male fertility and directing further work-up. In young men, the use of semen analysis may identify disease prior to attempted conception and result in improved fertility potential when combined with lifestyle changes, medical or surgical therapy. Furthermore, if sperm counts are significantly low, evaluation and management for genetic causes can be initiated. Our commentary outlines why screening for male infertility in young adult men may be beneficial. We discuss options for early intervention, including sperm cryopreservation, if defects in sperm parameters are identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Men with infertility experience significant distress, however research on psychiatric morbidity among this group is limited. Literature on explanatory models of infertility, which influence help seeking behaviour is also scarce. OBJECTIVES The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the prevalence and factors associated with psychiatric morbidity among men with infertility, their quality of life, and explanatory models regarding infertility. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and thirty-five consecutive males who attended the reproductive medicine outpatient clinic in a tertiary care hospital were recruited after obtaining informed consent. Psychiatric morbidity, quality of life and explanatory models were assessed using the Clinical Interview Schedule - Revised, Fertility Quality of Life scale and modified Short Explanatory Model Interview respectively. Socio-demographic and clinical details were recorded using a structured proforma. RESULTS Common mental disorder (CMD), observed in one third of the sample, was associated with longer duration of infertility and treatment, family history of psychiatric illness, sexual dysfunction, and past psychiatric illness in spouse. Presence of CMD was associated with lower quality of life scores. Participants held simultaneous and multiple explanatory models for infertility. CONCLUSION Men with infertility experience psychological distress that can further impair their quality of life. They should be offered support and psychosocial interventions as they undergo infertility treatment.

Abstract
Medical procreation impairs both the biological and psychological lives of couples. However, male and female attitudes to infertility are different and require a different approach during the IVF journey. Thus, the gender impact assessment (GIA) method was used to analyse original studies present in the literature. We found some gender-related differences and, subsequently, possible outcomes of intervention to improve healthy reproduction management and prevent infertility. In particular, it became apparent that there was the need for an in-depth male infertility assessment and a gender-specific follow-up.
