Terminal sliding-mode disturbance observer-based finite-time adaptive-neural formation control of autonomous surface vessels under output constraints

This paper proposes a tracking controller for the formation construction of multiple autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) in the presence of model uncertainties and external disturbances with output constraints. To design a formation control system, the leader-following strategy is adopted for each ASV. A symmetric barrier Lyapunov function (BLF), which advances to infinity when its arguments reach a finite limit, is applied to prevent the state variables from violating constraints. An adaptive-neural technique is employed to compensate uncertain parameters and unmodeled dynamics. To overcome the explosion of differentiation term problem, a first-order filter is proposed to realize the derivative of virtual variables in the dynamic surface control (DSC). To estimate the leader velocity in finite time, a high-gain observer is effectively employed. This approach is adopted to reveal all signals of the closed-loop system which are bounded, and the formation tracking errors are semi-globally finite-time uniformly bounded. The computer simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of this newly proposed formation controller for the autonomous surface vessels.

An observer-based output tracking controller for electrically driven cooperative multiple manipulators with adaptive Bernstein-type approximator

Thisarticle presents an observer-based output tracking control method for electrically actuated cooperative multiple manipulators using Bernstein-type operators as a universal approximator. This efficient mathematical tool represents lumped uncertainty, including external perturbations and unmodeled dynamics. Then, adaptive laws are derived through the stability analysis to tune the polynomial coefficients. It is confirmed that all the position and force tracking errors are uniformly ultimately bounded using the Lyapunov stability theorem. The theoretical achievements are validated by applying the proposed observer-based controller to a cooperative robotic system comprised of two manipulators transporting a rigid object. The outcomes of the introduced method are also compared to RBFNN, which is a powerful state-of-the-art approximator. The results demonstrate the efficacy of the introduced adaptive control approach in controlling the system even in the presence of disturbances and uncertainties.

A New Switching Adaptive Fuzzy Controller with an Application to Vibration Control of a Vehicle Seat Suspension Subjected to Disturbances

This paper proposes a new switching adaptive fuzzy controller and applies it to vibration control of a vehicle seat suspension equipped with a semi-active magnetorheological (MR) damper. The proposed control system consists of three functioned filters: (1) Filter 1: a model of interval type 2 fuzzy to compensate disturbances; (2) Filter 2: a ‘switching term’ to evaluate the magnitude of disturbance; and (3) Filter 3: a group of adaptation laws to enhance the robustness of control input. These filters play a role of powerful shields to improve control performance and guarantee the stability of the applied system subjected to external disturbances. After embedding a PID (proportional-integral-derivative) model into Riccati-like equation, main control parameters are updated based on the adaptation laws. The proposed controller is then synthesized in two different cases: high disturbance and small disturbance. For the high disturbance, a special type of sliding surface function, which relates to an exponential function and its t-norm, is used to increase the energy of control system. For the small disturbance, the energy from the modified t-norm of the sliding surface is neglected to reduce the energy consumption with maintaining the desired performance. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller, a vehicle seat suspension installed with controllable MR damper is adopted to reflect the robustness against external disturbances corresponding to road excitations. It is validated from computer simulation that the proposed controller can provide better vibration control performance than other existing robust controllers showing excellent control stability with well-reduced displacement and velocity at the position of the seat.

High-Gain Observer-Based Neural Adaptive Feedback Linearizing Control of a Team of Wheeled Mobile Robots

This paper addresses the neural network (NN) output feedback formation tracking control of nonholonomic wheeled mobile robots (WMRs) with limited voltage input. A desired formation is achieved based on the leader–follower strategy utilizing hyperbolic tangent saturation functions to reduce the risk of actuator saturation. The controller is developed by incorporating the high-gain observer and radial basis function (RBF) NNs using the inverse dynamics control technique. The high-gain observer is introduced to estimate velocities of the followers. The RBF NN preserves the robustness of the proposed controller against uncertain nonlinearities. The adaptive laws are also combined by a robust control term to estimate the weights of RBF NN, approximation errors, and bounds of unknown time-variant environmental disturbances. A Lyapunov-based stability analysis proves that all signals of the closed-loop system are bounded, and tracking errors are uniformly ultimately bounded. Finally, some simulations are carried out to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller for a number of WMRs.
