A Training Model for Addressing Microaggressions in Group Psychotherapy

Culturally responsive group psychotherapists have an ethical obligation to respond to microaggressions; therefore, training in therapeutic approaches to microaggressions is necessary. This article describes the complex factors present when microaggressions occur in group psychotherapy and provides a training model that addresses barriers to microaggression responsiveness and facilitates complex skill building. The training model consists of didactic training, role-play and modeling, and an experiential fishbowl-style group exercise. It provides the rationale, parameters, and descriptions of each component to promote the training model. The model was well received at conferences of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, but more research is needed to establish its effectiveness.

Group Psychotherapy in Specialty Clinics for Substance Use Disorder Treatment:The Challenge of Ethnoracially Diverse Clients

Minimal research has explored how clinicians address race and ethnicity considerations in the context of group psychotherapy within substance use disorder (SUD) specialty treatment settings. This article is an exploratory qualitative study in an effort to narrow this gap, using data from semi-structured interviews with 13 group clinicians at three outpatient SUD specialty clinics in the United States. Results are drawn from the portion of coded material pertaining to ethnoracial considerations. A predominant theme from the interviews was the importance of individualized care in terms of "meeting clients where they are at." However, minimal attention appears to have been given to addressing clients' demographic diversity. Overall, ethnoracial considerations were minimally addressed in groups, with clinicians framing such primarily in terms of "cultural" factors relevant to clinics' treatment philosophies. Moreover, limited attention was reportedly given to acknowledgment of social inequities faced by ethnoracial minority clients (e.g., racial discrimination), even though a few clinicians reported concern that minority clients were less engaged in treatment. Clinical implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Challenges in Promoting Race Dialogues in Psychology Training: Race and Gender Perspectives

Given today’s racial diversity and the ongoing racial tensions in our communities as a result of police shootings of unarmed Black men, terrorist acts in the United States and globally, and expressions of racism and xenophobia in the political arena, it is essential for psychologists to be culturally competent. Four diverse faculty members engaged in a self-study of their multicultural teaching practices to explore the challenges inherent in participating in authentic race dialogues. In this article, we discuss the findings from our independent and collective analysis of faculty narratives and provide recommendations for facilitating honest and courageous race dialogues in graduate psychology training.
