Abstract
Multilayer vesicles with an onion-like architecture can form by self-assembly of organic amphiphiles such as dendrimers, small-molecule surfactants, and block copolymers. Thus far, there are limited reports about multilayer vesicles based on coordination compounds. Herein, we show that nano onions are obtained by aggregation of an amphiphilic Au3(pyrazolate)3 complex in aqueous solution. The nanostructures were characterized by cryogenic and transition electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. Control experiments with analogous Ag(I) and Cu(I) complexes revealed the importance of Au(I) for the formation of well-defined nano onions. A structurally related Au(I) complex without solubilizing polyethylene glycol side chains was analyzed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the solid state, columns of offset, π-stacked Au3(pyrazolate)3 complexes are observed, but short intermolecular Au⋯Au contacts were not found. Molecular dynamics simulations provided further insights into the aggregation process in aqueous solution, supporting the formation of nano-onion structures through lateral interactions between stacked complexes.

Abstract
A yet-outstanding supramolecular chemistry challenge is isolation of novel varieties of stacked complexes with finely-tuned donor-acceptor bonding and optoelectronic properties, as herein reported for binary adducts comprising two different cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTC@CTC'). Most previous attempts focused only on 1-2 factors among metal/ligand/substituent combinations, resulting in heterobimetallic complexes. Instead, here we show that, when all 3 factors are carefully considered, a broadened variety of CTC@CTC' stacked pairs with intuitively-enhanced intertrimer coordinate-covalent bonding strength and ligand-ligand/metal-ligand dispersion are attained (dM-M' 2.868(2) Å; ΔE>50 kcal/mol, an order of magnitude higher than aurophilic/metallophilic interactions). Significantly, CTC@CTC' pairs remain intact/strongly-bound even in solution (Keq 4.67×105 L/mol via NMR/UV-vis titrations), and the gas phase (mass spectrometry revealing molecular peaks for the entire CTC@CTC' units in sublimed samples), rather than simple co-crystal formation. Photo-/electro-luminescence studies unravel metal-centered phosphorescence useful for novel all metal-organic light-emitting diodes (MOLEDs) optoelectronic device concepts. This work manifests systematic design of supramolecular bonding and multi-faceted spectral properties of pure metal-organic macrometallacyclic donor/acceptor (inorganic/inorganic) stacks with remarkably-rich optoelectronic properties akin to well-established organic/organic and organic/inorganic analogues.

Abstract
One tetrahedral and two trigonal prismatic cages with π-basic Au3(pyrazolate)3 faces were obtained by connection of pre-formed gold complexes via dynamic covalent imine chemistry. The parallel arrangement of the Au3(pyrazolate)3 complexes in the prismatic cages augments the interaction with π-acids, as demonstrated by the encapsulation of polyhalogenated aromatic compounds. The tetrahedral cage was found to act as a potent receptor for fullerenes. The structures of the three cages, as well as the structures of adducts with C60 and C70, could be established by X-ray crystallography.

Abstract
Solid-gas reactions and in situ powder X-ray diffraction investigations of trinuclear silver complexes {[3,4,5-(CF3)3Pz]Ag}3 and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Ag}3 supported by highly fluorinated pyrazolates reveal that they undergo intricate ethylene-triggered structural transformations in the solid-state producing dinuclear silver-ethylene adducts. Despite the complexity, the chemistry is reversible producing precursor trimers with the loss of ethylene. Less reactive {[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Ag}3 under ethylene pressure and low-temperature conditions stops at an unusual silver-ethylene complex in the trinuclear state, which could serve as a model for intermediates likely present in more common trimer-dimer reorganizations described above. Complete structural data of three novel silver-ethylene complexes are presented together with a thorough computational analysis of the mechanism.

Abstract
Successful synthesis has been reported of 4-Mes2B-3,5-(CF3)2PzH and 4-Mes2B-3,5-(CF3)2PzH bearing sterically demanding diarylboron moieties at the pyrazole ring 4-position, and their corresponding copper(I) pyrazolate complexes. They show visible blue photoluminescence in solution. The X-ray crystal structures revealed that the fluorinated {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 crystallizes as discrete trinuclear molecules whereas as the non-fluorinated {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CH3)2Pz]Cu}3 forms dimers of trimers with two close inter-trimer Cu⋯Cu separations. The solid {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 featuring a sterically confined Cu3N6 core displays bright blue phosphorescence while {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CH3)2Pz]Cu}3, which is a dimer of a trimer, is a red phosphor at room temperature. This work illustrates the modulation of photo-physical properties of metal pyrazolates by adjusting the supporting ligand steric features and introducing secondary diarylboron luminophores. Computational analysis of the structures and photophysical properties of copper complexes are also presented.

Abstract
Complexes with closed-shell (d10-d10) interactions have been studied for their interesting luminescence properties in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices. The present computational study aims at understanding the chemical bonding/interactions in a series of molecules with unusually short metal-metal bond distances between monovalent coinage-metal (d10-d10) centres. The investigated molecules include pentanuclear complexes with M or M' = Cu(I), Ag(I), or Au(I) and Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2. In such complexes, the M-M' distances are up to 50-100 pm shorter than typical metallophilic bonds in homometallic analogues. Characterization and analysis of the chemical bond strength was performed using ab initio methods, density functional theory methods including a semi-empirical treatment of dispersion interactions (DFT-D3) and semi-empirical calculations at the extended Hückel theory (EHT) level. Population analysis suggests that hybridization occurs by mixing the (n + 1)s and (n + 1)p orbitals of M with the (nd) orbitals of M'. The orbital mixing plays a pivotal role in the polydentated polar-covalency/dative M-M' bonds that distinguish this bonding from the weaker metallophilic interactions.

Abstract
Two differently substituted pyrazole ligands have been investigated with regard to the topology of their Pt complexes: upon deprotonation, two mononuclear 1:2 PtII-pyrazole complexes—one of the sterically unhindered 4-Me-pzH and one of the bulky 3,5-tBu-pzH (pzH = pyrazole)—yield the corresponding 1:2 PtII-pyrazolato species; the former a triangular, trinuclear metallacycle (1), and the latter a dinuclear, half-lantern species (2) formed via the unprecedented cyclometallation of a butyl group. Stoichiometric oxidation of the colorless PtII2 complex produces the deep-blue, metal–metal bonded PtIII2 analog (3) with a rarely encountered unsymmetrical coordination across the Pt-Pt bond. All three complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray structure determination, 1H-NMR, IR, and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopic methods. The XPS spectra of the PtII2 and PtIII2 species are also reported. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the electronic structure, spectroscopic properties, and chemical bonding of the new complexes. The calculated natural population analysis charges and Wiberg bonding indices indicate a weak σ-interaction in the case of 2 and a formal Pt-Pt single bond in 3.

Abstract
Metallophilicity has been widely studied as a fundamental supramolecular interaction. However, the extent and directionality thereof remain controversial. A major obstacle lies in the difficulty to separately control the geometry and chemical composition. Herein, we address this challenge by modulating metallophilicity with mechanical pressure. Using a multinuclear Cu(I) complex as model system, we report anomalous anisotropies of (supra)molecular structures, vibrations, and interaction energies upon isotropic compression as well as concomitant (essentially turn-on) piezochromic luminescence enhancement with ∼103 modulation. The in situ characterizations indicate opposite behaviors of contact distances and cuprophilic interactions for intermolecular vs intramolecular Cu-Cu pairs under pressure. Theoretical calculations break down the attractive and repulsive forces associated with cuprophilicity, its spontaneous 4p-3d hybridization origin, and direction-dependent interaction strength. The use of isotropic mechanical force reveals the intrinsic anisotropy of metallophilicity in multinuclear systems.

Abstract
Described herein are the synthesis, structure, and photophysics of the iodo-substituted cyclic trinuclear copper(I) complex, Cu3[4-I-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]3 supported by a highly-fluorinated pyrazolate in comparison with its previously reported 4-Br/4-Cl analogues. The crystal structure is stabilised by multiple supramolecular interactions of Cu3⋯I and hydrogen/halogen bonding. The photophysical properties and supramolecular interactions are investigated experimentally/computationally for all three 4-halo complexes vis-à-vis relativistic effects.

Abstract

Coinage metal cyclic trinuclear compounds
(CTCs) are an emerging
class of metal coordination compounds that are valuable for many fine
optoelectronic applications, even though the reactivity dependence
by the different bridging ligands remains somewhat unclear. In this
work, to furnish some hints to unravel the effect of substituents
on the chemistry of Au(I) CTCs made of a specific class of bridging
ligand, we have considered two imidazolate Au(I) CTCs and the effect
of different substituents on the pyrrolic N atoms relative to classic
metal oxidations with I2 or by probing electrophilic additions.
Experimental suggestions depict a thin borderline between the addition
of MeI to the N-methyl or N-benzyl imidazolyl CTCs, which afford the
oxidized CTC in the former and the ring opening of the CTC and the
formation of carbene species in the latter. Moreover, the reactions
with iodine yield to the oxidation of the metal centers for the former
and just of a metal center in the latter, even in molar excess of
iodine. The analysis of the bond distances in the X-ray crystal structures
of the oxidized highlights that Au(III)-C and Au(III)-N bonds are
longer than observed for Au(I)–C and Au(I)–N bonds,
as formally not expected for Au(III) centers. Computational studies
converge on the attribution of these discrepancies to an additional
case of inverted ligand field (ILF), which solves the question with
a new interpretation of the Au(I)–ligand bonding in the oxidized
CTCs, which furnishes a new interpretation of the Au(I)-ligand bonding
in the oxidized CTCs, opening a discussion about addition/oxidation
reactions. Finally, the theoretical studies outputs depict energy
profiles that are compatible with the experimental results obtained
in the reaction of the two CTCs toward the addition of I2, MeI, and HCl. A revisitation
of some classic oxidation reactions of gold
centers in cyclic trinuclear compounds (CTCs) provides experimental
results leading to the opportunity to delineate the effect of imidazole
substituents in different outcomes from the reactions of CTCs with
I2 or MeI. Moreover, with the match between experimental
and theoretical results, a new interpretation of the oxidation states
of tetracoordinate gold as cases of inverted ligand field (ILF) is
discussed.

Abstract
Homoleptic, tetranuclear copper(I) pyrazolates {[3,5-(t-Bu)2Pz]Cu}4, {[3-(CF3)-5-(t-Bu)Pz]Cu}4, and {[4-Br-3,5-(i-Pr)2Pz]Cu}4 are excellent stand-alone catalysts for azide-alkyne cycloaddition reactions (CuAAC). This work demonstrates that a range of pyrazolates, including those with electron donating and electron-withdrawing groups to sterically demanding substituents on the pyrazolyl backbones, can serve as effective ligand supports on tetranuclear copper catalysts. However, in contrast to the tetramers and also highly fluorinated {[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3, trinuclear copper(I) complexes such as {[3,5-(i-Pr)2Pz]Cu}3 and {[3-(CF3)-5-(CH3)Pz]Cu}3 supported by relatively electron rich pyrazolates display poor catalytic activity in CuAAC. The behavior and degree of aggregation of several of these copper(I) pyrazolates in solution were examined using vapor pressure osmometry. Copper(I) complexes such as {[3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 and {[3-(CF3)-5-(t-Bu)Pz]Cu}4 with electron withdrawing pyrazolates were found to break up in solution to different degrees producing smaller aggregates while those such as {[3,5-(i-Pr)2Pz]Cu}3 and {[3,5-(t-Bu)2Pz]Cu}4 with electron rich pyrazolates remain intact. In addition, kinetic experiments were performed to understand the unusual activity of tetranuclear copper(I) pyrazolate systems.

Abstract
Cyclic trinuclear complexes with group 11 metal(I) ions are fascinating and important to coordination chemistry. One of the ligands known to form these cyclic trinuclear complexes is pyrazolate, which is a bridging ligand that coordinates many transition metal ions in a Npz–M–Npz linear mode (Npz = pyrazolyl nitrogen atom). In these group 11 metal(I) ions, copper is the most abundant metal. Therefore, polynuclear copper(I) complexes are very important in this field. The cyclic trinuclear copper(I) complex [Cu(3,5-Ph2pz)]3 (3,5-Ph2pz– = 3,5-diphenyl-1-pyrazolate anion) was reported in 1988 as a landmark complex, but its photoluminescence properties have hitherto not been described. In this study, we report the photoluminescence and two different polymorphs of [Cu(3,5-Ph2pz)]3 and its derivative [Cu(3-Me-5-Phpz)]3 (3-Me-5-Phpz– = 3-metyl-5-phenyl-1-pyrazale anion). The substituents in [Cu(3-Me-5-Phpz)]3 cause smaller distortions in the solid-state structure and a red-shift in photoluminescence due to the presence of intermolecular cuprophilic interactions.

Abstract
Coinage metal(I)···metal(I) interactions are widely of interest in fields such as supramolecular assembly and unique luminescent properties, etc. Only two types of polynuclear silver(I) pyrazolato complexes have been reported, however, and no detailed spectroscopic characterizations have been reported. An unexpected synthetic method yielded a polynuclear silver(I) complex [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n (L1Clpz− = 4-chloride-3,5-diisopropyl-1-pyrazolate anion) by the reaction of {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2 with (nBu4N)[Ag(CN)2]. The obtained structure was compared with the known hexanuclear silver(I) complex {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2. The Ag···Ag distances in [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n are slightly shorter than twice Bondi’s van der Waals radius, indicating some Ag···Ag argentophilic interactions. Two Ag–N distances in [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n were found: 2.0760(13) and 2.0716(13) Å, and their N–Ag–N bond angles of 180.00(7)° and 179.83(5)° indicate that each silver(I) ion is coordinated by two pyrazolyl nitrogen atoms with an almost linear coordination. Every five pyrazoles point in the same direction to form a 1-D zig-zag structure. Some spectroscopic properties of [Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]n in the solid-state are different from those of {[Ag(μ-L1Clpz)]3}2 (especially in the absorption and emission spectra), presumably attributable to this zig-zag structure having longer but differently arranged intramolecular Ag···Ag interactions of 3.39171(17) Å. This result clearly demonstrates the different physicochemical properties in the solid-state between 1-D coordination polymer and metalacyclic trinuclear (hexanuclear) or tetranuclear silver(I) pyrazolate complexes.

Abstract
Five luminescent polymorphic aggregates of trinuclear Cu(i)-pyrazolate, namely [anti-Cu3L3]2 (1), [syn-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]2 (2), [anti-Cu3L3·C2H5OH]n (3), [anti-Cu3L3·0.5C7H8]n (4) and [syn-Cu3L3·C8H10]n (5) (HL = 4-(pyridin-4-ylthio)-3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazole), were reported. The trimeric Cu3L3 fragments present syn- and anti-conformations dependent on the dangled direction of 4-pyridyl groups on the two sides of the Cu3Pz3 plane (Pz = pyrazolate). Intertrimeric NPyCu weak coordination bonds associate these Cu3L3 fragments together to form dimeric or polymeric structures, which are further stabilized by crystallized solvent molecules or intertrimeric CuCu interactions. The solvated complexes (3-5) may be transformed into the unsolvated complex 1 by evacuation of the crystallized solvents upon heating. All these complexes emit from green to yellow under UV irradiation, which originated from the triplet excited states of metal to ligand charge transfer (3MLCT) mixed with intertrimeric CuCu interactions. This work provides a novel kind of supramolecular aggregate based on Cu3Pz3 beyond the classical π-acidbase adducts and metallophilicity-dependent dimers/oligomers.

Abstract
Interest in piezochromic luminescence has increased in recent decades, even though it is mostly limited to pure organic compounds and fluorescence. In this work, a Cu3Pz3 (Cu3, Pz: pyrazolate) cyclic trinuclear complex (CTC) with two different crystalline polymorphs, namely 1a and 1b, was synthesized. The CTC consists of two functional moieties: carbazole (Cz) chromophore and Cu3 units. In crystals of 1a, discrete Cz-Cu3-Cu3-Cz stacking was found, showing abnormal pressure-induced phosphorescence enhancement (PIPE), which was 12 times stronger at 2.23 GPa compared to under ambient conditions. This novel observation is ascribed to cooperation between heavy-atom effects (i.e., from Cu atoms) and metal-ligand charge-transfer promotion. The infinite π-π stacking of Cz motifs was observed in 1b and it exhibited good piezochromism as the pressure increased. This work demonstrates a new concept in the design of piezochromic materials to achieve PIPE via combining organic chromophores and metal-organic phosphorescence emitters.

Abstract
Non-porous small molecule adsorbents such as {[3,5-(CF3 )2 Pz]Cu}3 (where Pz=pyrazolate) are an emerging class of materials that display attractive features for ethene-ethane separation. This work examines the chemistry of fluorinated copper(I) pyrazolates {[3,5-(CF3 )2 Pz]Cu}3 and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF3 )2 Pz]Cu}3 with much larger 1-butene in both solution and solid state, and reports the isolation of rare 1-butene complexes of copper(I), {[3,5-(CF3 )2 Pz]Cu(H2 C=CHC2 H5 )}2 and {[4-Br-3,5-(CF3 )2 Pz]Cu(H2 C=CHC2 H5 )}2 and their structural, spectroscopic, and computational data. The copper-butene adduct formation in solution involves olefin-induced structural transformation of trinuclear copper(I) pyrazolates to dinuclear mixed-ligand systems. Remarkably, larger 1-butene is able to penetrate the dense solid material and to coordinate with copper(I) ions at high molar occupancy. A comparison to analogous ethene and propene complexes of copper(I) is also provided.

Abstract
The strategy of aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) has been proven to be efficient in wide areas and has recently been adopted in the field of metal nanoclusters. However, the relationship between atomically precise clusters and AIEE is still unclear. Herein, we have successfully obtained two few-atom heterometallic gold-silver hepta-/decanuclear clusters, denoted Au6Ag and Au9Ag, and determined their structures by X-ray diffraction and mass spectrometry. The nature of the AuI⋯AgI interactions thereof is demonstrated through energy decomposition analysis to be far-beyond typical closed-shell metal-metal interaction dominated by dispersion interaction. Furthermore, a positive correlation has been established between the particle size of the nanoaggregates and the photoluminescence quantum yield for Au6Ag, manifesting AIEE control upon varying the stoichiometric ratio of Au : Ag in atomically-precise clusters.

Abstract
Among the d10 coinage metal complexes, cyclic trinuclear complexes (CTCs) or trinuclear metallocycles with intratrimer metal-metal interactions are fascinating and important metal-organic or organometallic π-acids/bases. Each CTC of characteristic planar or near-planar trimetal nine-membered rings consists of Au(I)/Ag(I)/Cu(I) cations that linearly coordinate with N and/or C atoms in ditopic anionic bridging ligands. Since the first discovery of Au(I) CTC in the 1970s, research of CTCs has involved several fundamental areas, including noncovalent and metallophilic interaction, excimer/exciplex, acid-base chemistry, metalloaromaticity, supramolecular assemblies, and host/guest chemistry. These allow CTCs to be embraced in a wide range of innovative potential applications that include chemical sensing, semiconducting, gas and liquid adsorption/separation, catalysis, full-color display, and solid-state lighting. This review aims to provide a historic and comprehensive summary on CTCs and their extension to higher nuclearity complexes and coordination polymers from the perspectives of synthesis, structure, theoretical insight, and potential applications.
