Abstract
Background Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is a prevalent condition in sports medicine, and as sports competitions become more popular, the incidence of sports injuries is on the rise. Despite the increasing research on PFPS, there remains a lack of bibliometric analyses on this topic. The aim of this study was to identify the research hotspots and trends in the field of PFPS by reviewing 23 years of literature in this field. Methods By analyzing the literature on PFPS research from 2000 to 2023 in the core dataset of the Web of Science database and utilizing bibliometric tools like CiteSpace 6.1, VOSviewer 1.6.18, R-bibliometrix 4.6.1, Pajek 5.16, and Scimago Graphica 1.0.26, our aim was to gain insights into the current status and key areas of PFPS research. The study examined various aspects including the number of publications, countries, institutions, journals, authors, collaborative networks, keywords, and more. Through the visualization of relevant data, we also attempted to forecast future trends in the field. Results There were 2,444 publications were included in this visualization study, published in 322 journals by 1,247 authors from 818 institutions in 67 countries. The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy had the highest number of publications, with the USA leading in article count. La Trobe University contributed the most articles, while Rathleff MS and Barton CJ emerged as the most prolific authors. Hip and knee strength and core strength, lower extremity kinematics and biomechanics, females (runners), muscle activation, risk factors, gait retraining, clinical practice guidelines, and rehabilitation were research hotspot keywords. Conclusion Current research suggests that there is still significant potential for the development of PFPS research. Key areas of focus include the clinical effectiveness of combined hip and knee strengthening to address PFPS, characterization of lower limb kinematics and biomechanics, gait retraining, risk factors, and clinical practice guidelines. Future research could explore the effectiveness of innovative exercise therapies such as blood flow restricting training, gait retraining, and neuromuscular control training for PFPS improvement. Further investigation into gait retraining for runners, particularly females, and clinical efficacy study of a novel PRP formulation for the treatment of PFPS.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the pain and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude ratio of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) to the vastus lateralis (VL) after botulinum toxin type A (BTA) was injected in the bilateral osteoarthritic knee of patients with patellar malalignment for analysis. Material and methods: A total of fifteen patients were recruited; the more symptomatic knee of each patient received a BTA injection (BTA side). The other set of patients were left untreated. In all, fifteen healthy participants comprised the control group. The Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) and numeric rating scale (NRS) for pain were assessed. The EMG amplitude of VL and VMO activity was recorded using an isokinetic dynamometer and synchronized using the BIOPAC MP100. The data were collected before and at 4, 8, and 12 weeks post−BTA injection. Results: The EMG ratios of the patient group were lower than those of the control group at all testing velocities (p < 0.05). The VMO/VL ratio improved significantly on the BTA side only. The VMO/VL ratios on the BTA side were higher than those on the untreated side (p < 0.05). Knee pain decreased significantly after the BTA injection. The EMG ratios were negatively correlated with the NRS and WOMAC scores. Conclusion: BTA injection effectively reduces knee pain and restores the EMG ratio between the VMO and VL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Local neuromuscular deficits have been reported in people with patellofemoral pain. We synthesised the neuromuscular characteristics associated with patellofemoral pain to help identify interventional targets and potential mechanisms. METHODS Five databases were searched for local neuromuscular characteristics in case-control studies. Electromyography, flexibility, muscle performance and cross-sectional area data were derived from functional or isolated task investigations and synthesised accordingly. An evidence gap map was constructed. FINDINGS Sixty-seven studies were included. In functional tasks, electromyographic investigations showed moderate evidence of small effect for vastus medialis onset-delays relative to vastus lateralis (0.44 [0.03, 0.85]) during stepping/stair negotiation tasks, and higher biceps femoris mean excitation amplitudes (0.55 [0.06, 1.04]) in single-leg triple-hop test. In isolated tasks, we found moderate evidence of medium effect for lower Hoffman-reflex amplitude of vastus medialis (-1.12 [-1.56, -0.67]). Muscle performance investigations showed; strong evidence with medium and small effects for lower extensors concentric (-0.61 [-0.81, -0.40]) and eccentric (-0.56 [-0.79, -0.33]) strength, and moderate evidence of medium effect of lower isometric (-0.64 [-0.87, -0.41]) strength, moderate evidence with small effect for rate of force development to 30% (-0.55[-0.89, -0.21]), 60% (-0.57[-0.90, -0.25]) and medium effect to 90% (-0.76[-1.43, -0.10]) of maximum voluntary contraction, and small effect for lower flexors concentric strength (-0.46 [-0.74, -0.19]) and extensors total work (-0.48 [-0.90, -0.07]). Flexibility investigations showed tighter hamstrings (-0.57 [-0.99, -0.14]). INTERPRETATION Differences within quadriceps and hamstrings motor-control, hamstrings tightness, and quadriceps and hamstrings weakness are associated with patellofemoral pain, and can be used to guide investigations of treatment effects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence of Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (PFPS) is often found in daily medical care. Rehabilitation is usually applied with good results. However, patients often do not respond to standard rehabilitation, suggesting there may be some undetected factors that standard treatments cannot address. It is known that post-traumatic adhesive capsulitis in the knee often shows symptoms similar to those of PFPS, but idiopathic adhesive capsulitis (IAC) has seldom been mentioned as a possible cause of PFPS. Adhesive capsulitis in the shoulder joint causes frozen shoulder (FS), and hydraulic distension (HD) is often applied to FS effectively. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to investigate and report on the clinical application of HD to treat PFPS non-responsive to rehabilitation treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS HD was applied to 72 knees that had resisted regular conservative treatments for PFPS. Follow-up data (e.g. visual analogue scale) was collected immediately after HD, and at periods of 1, 3 and 6 months later. RESULTS Of the 72 patients, 64 patients obtained pain relief after HD. Pain was relieved for at least 6 months for 33 of the 64 patients. No benefit was received for 8 patients. CONCLUSIONS HD could be an additional conservative option for some PFPS that resisted rehabilitation. Assuming that the mechanisms of action for HD in the knee are the same as those in FS, there is evidence to suggest that IAC might play a role in the development of PFPS for some patients.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Introduction: So far, little is known about the behavior of electromyographic activity of vastus lateralis oblique muscle during treadmill gait in subjects with and without patellofemoral pain syndrome. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electromyographic activity of the patellar stabilizers muscles and the angle of the knee joint flexion in subjects with and without patellofemoral pain syndrome. Method: Fifteen subjects without (21 ± 3 years) and 12 with patellofemoral pain syndrome (20 ± 2 years) were evaluated. The electromyographic activity and flexion angle of the knee joint were obtained during gait on the treadmill with a 5 degree inclination. Results: The knee flexion angle was significantly lower in the subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome when compared with the healthy controls. The electromyographic activity of vastus lateralis longus was significantly greater during gait on the treadmill with inclination in subjects with patellofemoral pain syndrome. The results also showed that the electromyographic activity of vastus lateralis oblique and vastus medialis oblique were similar in both groups, regardless of the condition (with/without inclination). Conclusion: We have shown that knee kinematics during gait differs among patients with and without patellofemoral pain syndrome and healthy controls and that a different motor strategy persists even when the pain is no longer present. In addition, the findings suggested that the vastus lateralis oblique has a minor role in patellar stability during gait.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of patellar taping on muscle activation of the knee and hip muscles in women with Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome during five proprioceptive exercises. Forty sedentary women with syndrome were randomly allocated in two groups: Patellar Taping (based in McConnell) and Placebo (vertical taping on patella without any stretching of lateral structures of the knee). Volunteers performed five proprioceptive exercises randomly: Swing apparatus, Mini-trampoline, Bosu balance ball, Anteroposterior sway on a rectangular board and Mediolateral sway on a rectangular board. All exercises were performed in one-leg stance position with injured knee at flexion of 30° during 15s. Muscle activation was measured by surface electromyography across Vastus Medialis, Vastus Lateralis and Gluteus medius muscles. Maximal voluntary contraction was performed for both hip and knee muscles in order to normalize electromyography signal relative to maximum effort during the exercises. ANOVA results reported no significant interaction (P>0.05) and no significant differences (P>0.05) between groups and intervention effects in all exercise conditions. Significant differences (P<0.01) were only reported between muscles, where hip presented higher activity than knee muscles. Patellar taping is not better than placebo for changes in the muscular activity of both hip and knee muscles during proprioceptive exercises. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02322515.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patellofemoral pain (PFP) affects 25% of the general population, occurring 2 times more often in females compared with males. Taping is a valuable component of the management plan for altering lower limb biomechanics and providing pain relief; however, the effects of alternative taping techniques, such as Mulligan knee taping, appear yet to be researched. PURPOSE To determine whether the Mulligan knee taping technique altered levels of perceived knee pain and lower limb biomechanics during a single-legged squat (SLSq) in adult females with PFP. STUDY DESIGN Controlled laboratory study. METHODS A total of 20 female patients with PFP, aged 18 to 35 years, participated in this study. Participants performed 3 to 5 SLSq on their most symptomatic limb during a taped (Mulligan knee taping technique) and nontaped (control) condition. During the eccentric phase of the SLSq, the 3-dimensional kinematics (250 Hz) of the knee and hip and the ground-reaction forces (1000 Hz) and muscle activation patterns (1000 Hz) of the gluteus medius, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis oblique were measured. Participants' perceived maximum knee pain was also recorded after the completion of each squat. RESULTS Between-condition differences were found for hip kinematics and gluteus medius activation but not for kinetics or vastus medialis oblique and vastus lateralis muscle activity (timing and activation). Compared with the nontaped condition, the Mulligan knee taping technique significantly (P = .001) reduced perceived pain during the SLSq (mean ± SD: 2.29 ± 1.79 and 1.29 ± 1.28, respectively). In the taped condition compared with the control, the onset timing of the gluteus medius occurred significantly earlier (120.6 ± 113.0 and 156.6 ± 91.6 ms, respectively; P = .023) and peak hip internal rotation was significantly reduced (6.38° ± 7.31° and 8.34° ± 7.92°, respectively; P = .002). CONCLUSION The Mulligan knee taping technique successfully reduced knee pain in participants with PFP. This is the first study to establish a link between Mulligan knee taping and the reduction of PFP in conjunction with decreased hip internal rotation and earlier activation of gluteus medius. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The Mulligan knee taping technique may benefit the clinical environment by providing an alternative evidence-based treatment plan for PFP.

Abstract
[Purpose] The aim of this review was to present the available evidence for the effect of
McConnell taping on knee biomechanics in individuals with anterior knee pain. [Methods]
The PubMed, Medline, Cinahl, SPORTDiscus, PEDro and ScienceDirect electronic databases
were searched from inception until September 2014. Experimental research on knee
biomechanical or EMG outcomes of McConnell taping compared with no tape or placebo tape
were included. Two reviewers completed the searches, selected the full text articles, and
assessed the risk of bias of eligible studies. Authors were contacted for missing data.
[Results] Eight heterogeneous studies with a total sample of 220 were included in this
review. All of the studies had a moderate to low risk of bias. Pooling of data was
possible for three outcomes: average knee extensor moment, average VMO/VL ratio and
average VMO-VL onset timing. None of these outcomes revealed significant differences.
[Conclusion] The evidence is currently insufficient to justify routine use of the
McConnell taping technique in the treatment of anterior knee pain. There is a need for
more evidence on the aetiological pathways of anterior knee pain, level one evidence, and
studies investigating other potential mechanisms of McConnell taping.
