Evaluation of recycled HDPE milk bottles for food applications

One-dimensional and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatographic approaches for the characterization of post-consumer recycled plastic materials

In September 2022, the European Commission published its new regulation on recycled plastic materials for food contact. It allows newly developed, non-authorized technologies and approaches, or so-called novel technologies, to be deployed in the field to generate the data needed for establishing regulatory and/or fit for purpose processes. The data shall be generated by using suitable methods, but the regulation does not give a more detailed description on those. In this study, commercially purchased buckets made of post-consumer recycled polypropylene were screened, using a number of different analytical approaches. Sample preparation methods, analysis techniques, and the data and information generated were compared. The results clearly demonstrate the need for a detailed characterization of such materials and the advantages and disadvantages of the analysis using conventional gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and mass spectrometery as well as two-dimensional comprehensive gas chromatography with time of flight mass spectrometry.

Untargeted selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry headspace analysis: High-throughput differentiation of virgin and recycled polyethylene pellets

RATIONALE

Recycled plastics are increasingly used for packaging of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG). Compared with packaging made from virgin polymers, there is greater risk of taints entering products due to prior use of the polymers and incomplete cleaning. Increased quality assurance testing of polymer feedstock is required for recycled packaging. Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) analysis coupled with multivariate statistical data processing can provide high-throughput untargeted screening of recycled polymers at low cost per sample.

METHODS

SIFT-MS is a direct-injection MS technique that provides high-throughput automated headspace analysis of polymer samples when coupled with a syringe-injection autosampler (12 incubated samples per hour). Full-scan SIFT-MS data were processed using multivariate statistical analysis (specifically, the soft independent modeling by class analogy (SIMCA) algorithm).

RESULTS

SIFT-MS full-scan data were acquired for ten replicates each of ten recycled and four virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pellet products from multiple manufacturers. The samples varied approximately 20-fold in terms of total volatile residue, while showing very high repeatability across replicates. SIFT-MS scan data were dominated by aliphatic and monoterpene hydrocarbon residues, and - to a lesser extent - alcohols. Application of the SIMCA algorithm to the data resulted in successful classification by both individual samples and manufacturers.

CONCLUSIONS

Automated, untargeted SIFT-MS analysis coupled with multivariate statistical data analysis has the potential to provide rapid, effective screening of recycled polymer products, which would provide increased quality assurance of recycled polymers used for FMCG.

Volatile and non-volatile radiolysis products in irradiated multilayer coextruded food-packaging films containing a buried layer of recycled low-density polyethylene

The effects of gamma-irradiation (5-60 kGy) on radiolysis products and sensory changes of experimental five-layer food-packaging films were determined. Films contained a middle buried layer of recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) comprising 25-50% by weight (bw) of the multilayer structure. Respective films containing 100% virgin LDPE as the buried layer were used as controls. Under realistic polymer/food simulant contact conditions during irradiation, a large number of primary and secondary radiolysis products (hydrocarbons, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, carboxylic acids) were produced. These compounds were detected in the food simulant after contact with all films tested, even at the lower absorbed doses of 5 and 10 kGy (approved doses for food preservation). The type and concentration of radiolysis products increased progressively with increasing dose. Generally, there were no significant differences in radiolysis products between samples containing a buried layer of recycled LDPE and those containing virgin LDPE (all absorbed doses), indicating the good barrier properties of external virgin polymer layers. Volatile and non-volatile compounds produced during irradiation affected the sensory properties of potable water after contact with packaging films. Taste transfer to water was observed mainly at higher doses and was more noticeable for multilayer structures containing recycled LDPE, even though differences were slight.

Physicochemical and mechanical properties of experimental coextruded food-packaging films containing a buried layer of recycled low-density polyethylene

Migrational, permeation, and tensile properties of experimental five- and eight-layer coextruded and laminated films containing a middle buried layer of recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) comprising 40-50% bw of the multilayer structure were determined. Respective films containing 100% virgin LDPE as the buried layer were taken as controls. Results showed that the percentage of recycled LDPE in the multilayer structure did not affect overall migration values to distilled water, 3% acetic acid, and iso-octane. In all cases, overall migration values were lower than the upper acceptable limit (10 mg/dm(2)) set by the European Union. Transmission rate values to O(2), CO(2), and water vapor were also not affected by the percentage of recycled LDPE in the multilayer structure. On the basis of O(2) transmission rates, low-barrier, barrier, and high-barrier multilayer structures were produced. Likewise, tensile properties (tensile strength, percent elongation at break, and Young's modulus) were not affected by the percentage of recycled material in the multilayer structure. Finally, all experimental films produced no adverse effects in taste or odor of the food-contacting phase tested. The above findings are discussed in relation to the high quality of the primary LDPE scrap used throughout this work in combination with the functional barrier hypothesis. On the basis of the present results it is proposed that primary LDPE scrap may be used as a middle layer comprising 40-50% bw of multilayer food-packaging films without any compromise in migrational, barrier, mechanical, and organoleptic properties.

European priorities for research to support legislation in the area of food contact materials and articles

A strong science base is required to underpin the planning and decision-making process involved in determining future European community legislation on materials and articles in contact with food. Significant progress has been made in the past 5 years in European funded work in this area, with many developments contributing to a much better understanding of the migration process, and better and simpler approaches to food control. In this paper this progress is reviewed against previously identified work-areas (identified in 1994) and conclusions are reached about future requirements for R&D to support legislation on food contact materials and articles over the next 5 or so years.
