Positive Behavioral Support for Students with Severe Disabilities: An Emerging Multicomponent Approach for Addressing Challenging Behaviors

The potential role of nurses in leading positive behaviour support

Positive behaviour support (PBS) has become the preferred intervention in the management of challenging behaviour in learning disability and mental health services. However, there is an absence of literature on nurses' views and experience of PBS. Nurses are passive in PBS plan development while other professionals, such as clinical psychologists, often take the lead. While nurses see clinical psychologists as experts in PBS, they feel this could create a barrier that hinders its full potential and a more multidisciplinary approach would be beneficial. Nurses could take a pivotal role in delivering PBS plans if they were able to take a leading role, and this would benefit service users as nurses work far more closely with them than other professionals.

Practical Application of Functional Behavioral Assessment in Schools

Individualized Educational Program (IEP) teams working with students who have disabilities and a history of problem behavior that impedes their learning or that of others have the responsibility to develop their capacity to conduct functional behavioral assessments that lead to the delivery of effective behavior intervention plans. This article provides guidance to school-based teams that should prove useful to practitioners and families. In particular, this article highlights (a) the necessary components of a functional behavioral assessment, (b) a decision making framework concerning the selection of assessment and intervention procedures to be used at school, and (c) a description of one practical functional behavioral assessment tool—the Initial Line of Inquiry—that has been employed by school-based teams.

Positive behavior support and applied behavior analysis

This article reviews the origins and characteristics of the positive behavior support (PBS) movement and examines those features in the context of the field of applied behavior analysis (ABA). We raise a number of concerns about PBS as an approach to delivery of behavioral services and its impact on how ABA is viewed by those in human services. We also consider the features of PBS that have facilitated its broad dissemination and how ABA might benefit from emulating certain practices of the PBS movement.

On the relation between applied behavior analysis and positive behavioral support

Anderson and Freeman (2000) recently defined positive behavioral support (PBS) as a systematic approach to the delivery of clinical and educational services that is rooted in behavior analysis. However, the recent literature contains varied definitions of PBS as well as discrepant notions regarding the relation between applied behavior analysis and PBS. After summarizing common definitional characteristics of PBS from the literature, we conclude that PBS is comprised almost exclusively of techniques and values originating in applied behavior analysis. We then discuss the relations between applied behavior analysis and PBS that have been proposed in the literature. Finally, we discuss possible implications of considering PBS a field separate from applied behavior analysis.

Aggression and psychopathology in persons with severe or profound mental retardation

We examined aggression and psychopathology in persons with severe or profound mental retardation. Most aggressive episodes were directed toward other clients, and ratings of aggression were positively correlated with self-injury, stereotypic behavior, and being ambulatory. In a linear regression analysis of psychopathological correlates, aggression was most consistently predicted by dependent personality and psychosis. To better describe the construct of aggression, we also developed an Aggression-psychopathology scale. Persons with mental retardation and aggression were more likely to be impulsive, attention-seeking, dependent, socially inadequate, and anxious. Intensive efforts to modify the psychopathological correlates of aggression may improve treatment planning and outcome.
