Abstract
BACKGROUND Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are often prescribed in conjunction with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs after total hip arthroplasty (THA) and total knee arthroplasty (TKA) due to their gastroprotective effects. In animal studies, it has been suggested that PPIs have immunosuppressive effects and impair fracture healing; however, the association between PPI use and adverse events following THA and TKA has not been well-studied. METHODS An administrative claims database was queried for patients who underwent elective THA from 2010 to 2019. The experimental group consisted of patients who did not have a prior history of gastrointestinal bleeding or gastroesophageal reflux disease and who received a PPI prescription in the perioperative period. A 1:1 propensity score matching was used to create control cohorts of patients who did not have any PPI prescription filled, also matching for age, sex, and the Charlson Comorbidity Index. This same cohort selection and matching procedure was then repeated for patients undergoing elective TKA. In total, 11,450 patients were studied (3,103 TKA + PPI, 2,622 THA + PPI, 3,103 TKA controls, and 2,622 THA controls). The mean age was 64 years (range, 38 to 94), and 57% were women. Significance was considered at P < 0.05. RESULTS Perioperative PPI prescription in TKA patients was associated with significantly lower rates of all-cause revision (3.0 versus 4.1%, P < 0.01) and periprosthetic joint infection (1.0 versus 1.8%, P < 0.01). In THA patients, PPI prescription was associated with a lower all-cause revision rate (2.8 versus 4.0%, P = 0.02). No significant differences were found between PPI and non-PPI groups for aseptic loosening, periprosthetic fracture, gastrointestinal bleeding, or surgical site infection in either cohort. CONCLUSIONS Patients receiving routine PPI prescriptions in the perioperative period surrounding TKA and THA have a lower risk of all-cause revision surgery, and perioperative PPI use is associated with a decreased risk of PJI in patients undergoing TKA. As these results conflict with the few previous studies performed on this topic, additional controlled studies are warranted to fully elucidate the relationship between PPI use and adverse events after THA and TKA.

Abstract
Background: The use of dental implant rehabilitation in the treatment of complete and partial edentulism has become an integral treatment today. This treatment is performed on healthy patients, but in some situations, also on those with associated general ailments. The presence of associated conditions increases the degree of difficulty of this type of treatment and tests the doctor's ability to manage the clinical case. The purpose of the study was to perform a meta-analysis of dental implants inserted over seven years and evaluate early implant failure in correspondence with age, sex, region of insertion, type of implant, and general state of health. Methods: A retrospective study was performed over 7 years of experience. For the study, 213 patients who fit the established inclusion criteria were selected. Patients were grouped taking into account age, sex, the type of implant used, and general associated conditions. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS STATISTICS 25.0 for windows Results: There were no highlighted situations in which the rejection of the dental implant occurred 10 days postoperatively or later during the healing period. Conclusions: Our results confirm and strengthen the existing data in the specialized literature, especially those related to the loss of implants in patients with associated general diseases.

Abstract
Implant dentistry has evolved to the point that standard implant osseointegration is predictable. This is attributed in part to the advancements in material sciences that have led toward improvements in implant surface technology and characteristics. Nonetheless, there remain several cases where implant therapy fails (specifically at early time points), most commonly attributed to factors affecting bone metabolism. Among these patients, smokers are known to have impaired bone metabolism and thus be subject to higher risks of early implant failure and/or late complications related to the stability of the peri-implant bone and mucosal tissues. Notably, however, emerging data have unveiled other critical factors affecting osseointegration, namely, those related to the metabolism of bone tissues. The aim of this review is to shed light on the effects of implant-related factors, like implant surface or titanium particle release; surgical-related factors, like osseodensification or implanted biomaterials; various drugs, like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, proton pump inhibitors, anti-hypertensives, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, and statins, and host-related factors, like smoking, diet, and metabolic syndrome on bone metabolism, and aseptic peri-implant bone loss. Despite the infectious nature of peri-implant biological complications, these factors must be surveyed for the effective prevention and management of peri-implantitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This narrative review aims to investigate the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration, analyzing their potential positive or negative impact on the direct structural and functional connection between bone and load-carrying implants. BACKGROUND The review seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of osseointegration, which refers to the successful integration of an implant with living bone, resulting in no progressive relative movement between them. Exploring the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration is crucial for optimizing outcomes and enhancing patient care in orthopedic implant procedures. METHODS Relevant studies on the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration were identified through a literature search. Electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar, were utilized, employing appropriate keywords and MeSH terms related to osseointegration, implants, and drug interventions. The search was limited to English studies. DISCUSSION This overview presents a detailed analysis of the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration. It explores drugs such as bisphosphonates, teriparatide, statins, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-blockers, nitrites, and thiazide diuretics as promoters of osseointegration. Conversely, loop diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, cyclosporine A, cisplatin, methotrexate, antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), antiepileptics, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and anticoagulants are discussed as inhibitors of the process. The role of vitamin D3 remains uncertain. The complex relationship between drugs and the biology of implant osseointegration is emphasized, underscoring the need for further in vitro and in vivo studies to validate their effects CONCLUSION: This narrative review contributes to the literature by providing an overview of the effects of drugs on implant osseointegration. It highlights the complexity of the subject and emphasizes the necessity for more extensive and sophisticated studies in the future. Based on the synthesis of the reviewed literature, certain drugs, such as bisphosphonates and teriparatide, show potential for promoting implant osseointegration, while others, including loop diuretics and certain antibiotics, may impede the process. However, additional research is required to solidify these conclusions and effectively inform clinical practice.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Maintenance of a firm and long-term stable osseointegration is the primary goal of implant dentistry. Time is used to define implant failure characteristics. Early implant failure (EIF) occurs up to one year after loading. Recent studies indicated an association between proton pump inhibitors (PPI) therapy and failure of osseointegration. The present study assessed whether the use of PPIs is a risk factor to EIF. Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study including 687 patients and 2971 dental implants. The study group (PPIs users) comprised 17.3% (119) individuals and 18.7% (555) implants. The remaining cohort (82.7% (568) individuals and 81.3% (2416) implants) served as control. The information was taken from the patients' files. The following information was collected: age, gender, physical status, systemic diseases, HbA1C values before and after implant-supported prosthesis delivery in cases of diabetes mellitus, smoking, implant location, number of implants per individual, bone augmentation, implant brand, length and width, and EIF. EIF was defined as implant removal within a period of up to 12 months from loading. Results: EIF in PPIs vs. non-PPIs users was 19.3% vs. 14.3% (p = 0.16) at patient level and 5.4% vs. 3.5% at implant level (p = 0.03). Univariate analysis yielded factors significantly associated with PPIs use, including older age, physical status of the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) 3, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, cardiovascular accident (CVA), location (anterior mandible), shorter and narrower implants, and higher number of implants per individual. Multivariate analysis yielded statistically significant OR of 1.91; p = 0.01 for EIF following PPIs use and 2.3; p < 0.001 for location in anterior mandible. Conclusions: Patients and their healthcare providers are advised to carefully consider the potential risks of taking PPIs prior to dental implant surgery. Further research is needed to confirm these risks and elucidate systemic and local factors that may be involved in such outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dental implants have been one of the most popular treatments for rehabilitating individuals with single missing teeth or fully edentulous jaws since their introduction. As more implant patients are well-aged and take several medications due to various systemic conditions, clinicians should be mindful of possible drug implications on bone remodeling and osseointegration. OBJECTIVE The present study aims to study and review some desirable and some unwelcomed implications of medicine on osseointegration. METHODS A broad search for proper relevant studies were conducted in four databases, including Web of Science, Pubmed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. RESULTS Some commonly prescribed medicines such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), glucocorticoids, proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), anticoagulants, metformin, and chemotherapeutic agents may jeopardize osseointegration. On the contrary, some therapeutic agents such as anabolic, anti-catabolic, or dual anabolic and anti-catabolic agents may enhance osseointegration and increase the treatment's success rate. CONCLUSION Systemic medications that enhance osseointegration include mineralization promoters and bone resorption inhibitors. On the other hand, medications often given to the elderly with systemic problems might interfere with osseointegration, leading to implant failure. However, to validate the provided research, more human studies with a higher level of evidence are required.

Abstract
Both deficiency and overdose of minerals and salts negatively affect health. Changes in the dietary composition have immediate effects on the gut microbiota. This study was performed to clarify the presence of indigenous gut bacteria responsible for minerals and/or salts (MS-RIB). ICR mice were fed a diet containing 3.5% (w/w) mineral mix (control), 1% mineral mix (LM), or 3.5% mineral mix and 4% NaCl (HS) for 14 days. The caecal microbiota was examined using 16S rRNA gene (V4) amplicon sequencing. Consumption of drinking water was 2.5-fold higher in the HS group than in the other groups. Body weight gain was 55% lower in the HS group than in the other groups. At the family level, the relative abundance of Eryspelotrichaceae and Clostridiaceae was lower in the HS group than in the other groups. In contrast, the abundance of Bacteroidaceae was higher in the HS group. At the operational taxonomic unit level, Desulfovibrionaceaer-, Turicibacter sanguinis-, belonging to Eryspelotrichaceae, and Clostridium disporicum-like bacteria were dominant in the control group. Among these bacteria, T. sanguinis- and C. disporicum-like bacteria were markedly suppressed by HS. In the LM group, Bacteroides acidifaciens-like bacteria were suppressed. Suppression of C. disporicum and Turicibacter following consumption of the HS diet was the most notable effect, contrasting the results of previous studies.

Abstract
Mini dental implants can be used to support crowns and partial and complete dentures in compromised edentulous sites. Lack of bone width or site length may be treated with mini implants. Mini implants have less percutaneous exposure and displacement that may reduce complications. Nonetheless, mini implants transmit about twice the load to the supporting bone, and thus, control of occlusal loading is important. In fixed prosthetics, rounded flat cusps, splinting, implant protective occlusal schemes, and placement only in dense bone sites are features of successful mini implant treatment. With removable prosthetics, multiple mini implants may be needed for appropriate retention and load resistance. Maxillary lateral incisor and mandibular incisor sites may be best suited for mini implant treatment. However, past research on dental implants has been directed at standard sized implants. While mini implants are indeed dental implants, they behave somewhat differently under functional load, and the clinician should be circumspect and very judicious in their use. This article is a mini review and not a systematic review. The topics covered are not pervasive because each would require a monograph or textbook for a complete discussion.

Background: Recently, there is an increasing interest in the therapeutic potential of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for bone fracture treatment. Nevertheless, the effect of PRP for bone fracture treatment remains controversial and is still a matter of discussion. Therefore, we performed a systematic review to evaluate the efficacy and safety of PRP injection for treatment of bone fracture. Methods: The main bibliographic databases, including Medline, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane library, were comprehensively searched for studies focusing on the application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on bone fracture treatment. All relevant articles were screened for eligibility and subdivided into the preclinical and clinical studies. Data were extracted and presented systematically. Results: Finally, twenty-six in vitro preclinical studies (basic studies), nine in vivo preclinical studies (animal studies), and nine clinical studies, met the selection criteria, and were included in the present systematic review. Preclinical studies showed an overall positive effect of PRP on osteoblast-like cells in vitro and bone healing in animal models. The most used treatment for bone fracture in animal and clinical studies is fixation surgery combined with PRP injection. The clinical studies reported PRP shortened bony healing duration, and had no positive effect on improving the healing rate of closed fractures. However, the results of functional outcomes are controversial. Additionally, compared with control group, PRP would not increase the rate of postoperative wound infection. Conclusion: The present systematic review confirmed the continuing interests of PRP as an additional treatment for bone fracture. Preclinical studies highlighted the potential value of PRP as promising therapy for bone fracture. However, the preclinical evidence did not translate into a similar result in the clinical studies. In addition, types of fractures and procedures of PRP preparation are heterogeneous in enrolled studies, which might result in controversial results. Meanwhile, characteristics of PRP, such as platelet concentration, the numbers of leukocytes, still need to be determined and further research is required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effects of systemic omeprazole treatment on the osseointegration of titanium implants. MATERIAL AND METHODS After surgical insertion of titanium implants into the metaphyseal part of rats' both right and left tibial bones, the animals were randomly divided into three equal groups: control (n = 8), omeprazole dosage-1 (n = 8) (OME-1), and omeprazole dosage-2 (n = 8) (OME-2) and totally 48 implants were surgically integrated. The rats in the control group received no treatment during the four-week postoperative experimental period. In the OME-1 and OME-2 groups, the rats received omeprazole in doses of 5 and 10 mg/kg, respectively, every 3 days for 4 weeks. After the experimental period, the rats were euthanized. One rat died in each group and the study was completed with seven rats in each group. Blood serum was collected for biochemical analysis, and the implants and surrounding bone tissue were used for biomechanical reverse-torque analysis. In the biomechanical analysis, implants that were not properly placed and were not osseointegrated were excluded from the evaluation. RESULTS One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's honestly significant difference test and Student's t test were used for statistical analysis. The reverse-torque test (control (n = 9), OME-1 (N = 7), and OME-2 (n = 7)) analysis of biochemical parameters (alkaline phosphatase, calcium, phosphorus, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine amino transferase, urea, and creatinine) revealed no significant differences between the groups (control (n = 7), OME-1 (N = 7), and OME-2 (n = 7)) (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Omeprazole had no biomechanical or biochemical effects on the osseointegration process of titanium implants.

Abstract
Simple Summary Our research suggest radioiodine-131 used for differentiated thyroid carcinomas has an impact on the oral health of patients. We found that alteration of dental hard tissues starts after 6 h post-radioiodine administration. These findings highlight the importance of the multidisciplinary team management in the quality of life of the oncological patient. Abstract Radioiodine-131 (I-131) is an essential therapy for patients with differentiated thyroid carcinomas (DTC). Generally, I-131 is safe and well tolerated, but patients may present early or late complications in the oral and maxillofacial areas. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate in-vitro, the alteration of enamel and dentin after I-131 exposure using histopathological assessment, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). For I-131 irradiation, an in-vitro protocol was used that simulates the procedure for irradiation therapy performed for patients with DTCs. A total of 42 teeth were divided into seven groups (n = 6) and irradiated as follows: control, irradiation groups (3, 6, 12, 36, 48 h, 8 days). Histological changes were observed at 48 h (enamel surface with multifocal and irregular areas) and at 8 days (enamel surface with multiple, very deep, delimited cavities). SEM imaging revealed the enamel destruction progresses along with the treatment time increasing. The alterations are extended into the enamel depth and the dislocated hydroxyapatite debris is overwhelming. The enamel-dentine interface shows small gaps after 6 h and a very well developed valley after 12 h; the interface microstructure resulted after 8 days is deeply altered. The AFM imaging shows that I-131 affects the protein bond between hydroxyapatite nano-crystals causing loss of cohesion, which leads to significant increasing of nano-particles diameter after 6 h. In conclusion, both enamel and dentin appear to be altered between 12 and 48 h and after 8 days of treatment are extended in depth.

Abstract
Background Osseointegration is the premise of the chewing function of dental implant. Nerve growth factor (NGF), as a neurotrophic factor, can induce bone healing. However, the influence of NGF-chondroitin sulfate (CS)/hydroxyapatite (HA)-coating composite implant on the osseointegration and innervations is still not entirely clear. Materials and methods NGF-CS/HA-coating composite implants were prepared using the modified biomimetic method. The characteristics of NGF-CS/HA-coating implants were determined using a scanning electron microscope. After NGF-CS/HA-coating implants were placed in the mandible of Beagle dogs, the early osseointegration and innervation in peri-implant tissues were assessed through X-ray, Micro-CT, maximal pull-out force, double fluorescence staining, toluidine blue staining, DiI neural tracer, immunohistochemistry, and RT-qPCR assays. Results NGF-CS/HA-coating composite implants were made successfully, which presented porous mesh structures with the main components (Ti and HA). Besides, we revealed that implantation of NGF-CS/HA-coating implants significantly changed the morphology of bone tissues and elevated maximum output, MAR, BIC, and nerve fiber in the mandible of Beagle dogs. Moreover, we proved that the implantation of NGF-CS/HA-coating implants also markedly upregulated the levels of NGF, osteogenesis differentiation, and neurogenic differentiation-related genes in the mandible of Beagle dogs. Conclusion Implantation of NGF-CS/HA-coating composite implants has significant induction effects on the early osseointegration and nerve regeneration of peri-implant tissues in the mandible of Beagle dogs. Abstract
Thyroid hormones are important factors that regulate metabolism and cell differentiation throughout the human body. A complication of thyroid pathology is represented by an alteration of the bone metabolism which can lead to osteoporosis and fragility fractures, known to have a high mortality rate. Although there is a consensus on the negative impact of hyperthyroidism on bone metabolism, when referring to hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, or subclinical hyperthyroidism, there is no general agreement. The aim of our review was to update clinicians and researchers about the current data regarding the bone health in hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, and subclinical hyperthyroidism patients. Thyroid disorders have an important impact on bone metabolism and fracture risk, such that hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and subclinical hyperthyroidism are associated with a decreased bone mineral density (BMD) and increased risk of fracture. Subclinical hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is not associated with osteoporosis or fragility fractures, and subclinical hyperthyroidism treatment with radioiodine could improve bone health.
