Age differences in sensitivity, response bias, and reaction time on a visual discrimination task

Linking cognitive and visual perceptual decline in healthy aging: The information degradation hypothesis

Several hypotheses attempt to explain the relation between cognitive and perceptual decline in aging (e.g., common-cause, sensory deprivation, cognitive load on perception, information degradation). Unfortunately, the majority of past studies examining this association have used correlational analyses, not allowing for these hypotheses to be tested sufficiently. This correlational issue is especially relevant for the information degradation hypothesis, which states that degraded perceptual signal inputs, resulting from either age-related neurobiological processes (e.g., retinal degeneration) or experimental manipulations (e.g., reduced visual contrast), lead to errors in perceptual processing, which in turn may affect non-perceptual, higher-order cognitive processes. Even though the majority of studies examining the relation between age-related cognitive and perceptual decline have been correlational, we reviewed several studies demonstrating that visual manipulations affect both younger and older adults' cognitive performance, supporting the information degradation hypothesis and contradicting implications of other hypotheses (e.g., common-cause, sensory deprivation, cognitive load on perception). The reviewed evidence indicates the necessity to further examine the information degradation hypothesis in order to identify mechanisms underlying age-related cognitive decline.

Declined contrast sensitivity of neurons along the visual pathway in aging cats

Changes in the visual cortex appear to mediate much of the visual degradation during normal aging. However, how aging affects different stages along the visual pathway is unclear. In the current study, the contrast response function, one of the most important properties of neurons from early visual areas to high brain areas, was systematically compared along the visual pathway, including the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN), early visual cortices (A17 and A18), and posteromedial lateral suprasylvian cortex (PMLS, analog to the medial temporal area (MT) in monkeys) of young and old cats. We found that the effects of aging on the LGN were negligible, whereas those in the striate cortex were substantial, with even more severe degradation in the PMLS. Reduced contrast sensitivity of neurons in the three cortical areas was accompanied by enhanced maximal visual response, increased spontaneous activity, and decreased signal-to-noise ratio, while LGN neurons exhibited largely normal response properties. Our results suggested that there was a progressively greater effect of aging on neurons at successively higher stages in the visual pathway.

Children's and adults' memory for emotional pictures: examining age-related patterns using the Developmental Affective Photo System

Two studies were conducted to examine theoretical questions about children's and adults' memory for emotional visual stimuli. In Study 1, 7- to 9-year-olds and adults (N=172) participated in the initial creation of the Developmental Affective Photo System (DAPS). Ratings of emotional valence, arousal, and complexity were obtained. In Study 2, DAPS pictures were presented to 20 8- to 12-year-olds and 30 adults, followed by a recognition memory test. Children and adults recognized aversive images better than neutral images. Moreover, children and adults recognized high and moderate arousal images more accurately than low arousal images. Adults' memory for neutral images exceeded that of children, but there were no developmental differences in memory for aversive pictures. Theoretical and methodological implications are discussed.

Reduced neural selectivity increases fMRI adaptation with age during face discrimination

Ventral-visual activity in older adults has been characterized by dedifferentiation, or reduced distinctiveness, of responses to different categories of visual stimuli such as faces and houses, that typically elicit highly specialized responses in the fusiform and parahippocampal brain regions respectively in young adults (Park et al., 2004). In the present study, we demonstrate that age-related neural dedifferentiation applies to within-category stimuli (different types of faces) as well, such that older adults process less distinctive representations for individual faces than young adults. We performed a functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation experiment while young and older participants made same-different judgments to serially presented face-pairs that were Identical, Moderate in similarity through morphing, or Different. As expected, older adults showed adaptation in the fusiform face area (FFA), during the Identical as well as the Moderate conditions relative to the Different condition. Young adults showed adaptation during the Identical condition, but minimal adaptation to the Moderate condition. These results indicate that older adults' FFA treated the morphed faces as Identical faces, reflecting decreased fidelity of neural representation of faces with age.

Decreased proportion of GABA neurons accompanies age-related degradation of neuronal function in cat striate cortex

Electrophysiological studies indicate that a decline of GABAergic inhibition in the visual cortex may underlie age-related degradation of visual function [A.G. Leventhal, Y. Wang, M. Pu, Y. Zhou, Y. Ma, GABA and its agonists improved visual cortical function in senescent monkeys, Science 300 (2003) 812-815; M.T. Schmolesky, Y. Wang, M. Pu, A.G. Leventhal, Degradation of stimulus selectivity of visual cortical cells in senescent rhesus monkeys, Nat. Neurosci. 3 (2000) 384-390]. To date, there is little direct evidence to support this hypothesis. Using Nissl staining and immunohistochemical techniques, we quantitatively compared the density of total neurons (Nissl-stained neurons) and GABA-immunoreactive neurons as well as the proportion of GABA-immunoreactive neurons to total neurons in the primary visual cortex between 4 young adult (1-3 year old) cats and 4 old (12 year old) cats, which had been previously examined in a single-unit recording study [T. Hua, X. Li, L. He, Y. Zhou, Y. Wang, A.G. Leventhal, Functional degradation of visual cortical cells in old cats, Neurobiol. Aging 27 (2006) 155-162]. In that study, we found the function of V(1) (area 17) neurons in the old cats was significantly degraded relative to young adult cats. Our present results indicate that the density of total neurons in each cortical layer of V(1) exhibit no significant difference in the two age groups of cats. However, the density of GABA-immunoreactive neurons in old cats is significantly lower than in young adults. Further, the ratio of GABA-immunoreactive neurons to total neurons in each layer of V(1) in old cats is also significantly decreased when compared to young adult cats. These results provide direct morphological evidence of decreased GABAergic inhibition in the striate visual cortex of old animals, which accompany the functional degradation of visual cortical neurons.

Functional degradation of visual cortical cells in aged rats

Functional degradation of mammalian visual cortex is associated with aging. It has been hypothesized that much of the decline might be mediated by a degradation of cortical inhibitory system during senescence. In the present work, we compared the properties of adaptation, onset latency and signal-to-noise ratio in primary visual cortex of young and old rats using extracellular single-unit techniques. The short-term synaptic plasticity of young and old rats was also studied using field potential recording techniques. We found significant increased adaptation, prolonged onset latency, lower signal-to-noise ratio and decreased short-term synaptic plasticity in aged rats. The results are in accordance with previously reported functional declines in old monkeys and old cats, indicating a universal mechanism of degradation in cortical function that accompanies old age in different mammalian species.

Functional degradation of visual cortical cells in old cats

Visual function declines with age. Using extracellular single-unit in vivo recordings, we compared the function of primary visual cortical (area 17) cells in young and old paralyzed, anesthetized cats. The results reveal that cortical neurons in old cats exhibit higher visually evoked responses, higher spontaneous activities, lower signal-to-noise ratios, and weaker orientation and direction selectivity than do cells in young adult cats. These findings are consistent with previously reported age related declines in cortical function in senescent macaque monkeys. Thus, similar declines in cortical function accompany old age in different mammalian species with well developed cortices.

Effects of age, education, and sex on response bias in a recognition task

This study examined age-related differences in decision criteria and the extent to which inconsistencies in earlier findings could be due to sampling artifacts, especially the underlying effects of educational level and sex. Male and female participants (N = 3,059) from 4 age groups (32, 42, 52, and 62 years) and a wide range of educational levels performed a word recognition task. Response bias was assessed with a nonparametric index derived from signal detection theory. The analyses revealed no age differences except for the most educated subjects, for whom increased age was associated with stricter decision criteria. Lower levels of education and men as compared with women were associated with a more conservative bias. Controlling for the level of sensitivity did not significantly change this pattern of results. This finding stresses the need for caution in generalizing age differences obtained from samples that are only partly representative or imbalanced with respect to education and sex.
