Abstract
An overview of the solvent-driven aggregation of a series of chiral porphyrin derivatives studied by optical methods (UV/Vis, fluorescence, CD and RLS spectroscopies) is herein reported. The investigated porphyrins are characterized by the presence in the meso-positions of glycol-, steroidal- and glucosteroidal moieties, conferring amphiphilicity and solubility in aqueous media to the primarily hydrophobic porphyrin platform. Aggregation of the macrocycles is driven by a change in bulk solvent composition, forming architectures with supramolecular chirality, steered by the stereogenic centers on the porphyrin peripheral positions. The aggregation behavior and chiroptical properties of the final aggregated species strongly depend on the number and stereogenicity of the ancillary groups that dictate the mutual spatial arrangement of the porphyrin chromophores and their further organization in larger structures, usually detectable by different microscopies, such as AFM and SEM. Kinetic studies are fundamental to understand the aggregation mechanism, which is frequently found to be dependent on the substrate concentration. Additionally, Molecular Mechanics calculations can give insights into the intimate nature of the driving forces governing the self-assembly process. The critical use of these combined methods can shed light on the overall self-assembly process of chirally-functionalized macrocycles, with important implications on the development of chiral porphyrin-based materials.

Abstract
Dihydroporphyrins or chlorins differ from porphyrins only by saturation of a peripheral double bond of the macrocycle. However, this small structural difference leads to a significant increase of the absorption band at approximately 650 nm, which makes them very interesting candidates for photodynamic therapy applications. The reduction of porphyrins bearing two, three or four pyridyl substituents with tin(II) chloride has been developed for the synthesis of dihydroporphyrins in yields of 15–73%. The reduction of 5-(aryl)-10,15,20-tris(2 or 4-pyridyl)porphyrin with tin(II) chloride dihydrate demonstrated good regioselectivity. Porphyrins with one meso-aryl bearing one electron-donating group (EDG) gave 5-aryl-10,15,20-tris(2- or 4-pyridyl)-17,18-dihydroporphyrins in 17–72% yield. Porphyrins with one meso-aryl bearing one or more electron-withdrawing groups (EWG) gave 5-aryl-10,15,20-tris(4-pyridyl)-17,18-dihydroporphyrins or 5-aryl-10,15,20-tris(4-pyridyl)-7,8-dihydroporphyrins in 15–21% yield and isobacteriochlorin. We have also proven the possibility of functionalizing these compounds to design new regioisomerically pure photosensitizers.

Abstract
A series of porphyrin derivatives with one to four maltohexaose moieties in their meso positions have been synthesized. Zinc or free-base m-THPP (5,10,15,20-tetrakis(m-hydroxyphenyl)-porphyrin) was used as the porphyrin platform. The reaction of m-THPP with 3-iodopropyl nonadecaacetylmaltohexaoside afforded a mixture of all possible combinations of glycoconjugated porphyrins having one to four maltohexaose moieties; monoglycosylated (Ac-1), bisglycosylated (Ac-cis-2 and Ac-trans-2), triglycosylated (Ac-3), and tetraglycosylated (Ac-4) porphyrins were obtained in 11–26% yield. Removal of acetyl groups at maltohexaose moiety afforded highly water-soluble glycoconjugated porphyrins 1–4. Zinc derivatives were synthesized in a similar manner. These maltohexaose-linked porphyrins exhibit remarkable water-solublity (530 mg/mL for 4). The singlet oxygen production ability upon visible light irradiation is not affected by the maltohexaose substitution. Photo- and dark cytotoxicities of the maltohexaose-conjugated porphyrins 1–4 and Zn-1–4 were examined against a HeLa cell line, which showed that the mono-maltohexaosylated derivative (1 and Zn-1) was the most effective photosensitizer for PDT.

Abstract
This review is the fourth update of the original review, published in 1999, on the application of MALDI mass spectrometry to the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2006. The review covers fundamental studies, fragmentation of carbohydrate ions, method developments, and applications of the technique to the analysis of different types of carbohydrate. Specific compound classes that are covered include carbohydrate polymers from plants, N- and O-linked glycans from glycoproteins, glycated proteins, glycolipids from bacteria, glycosides, and various other natural products. There is a short section on the use of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry for the study of enzymes involved in glycan processing, a section on industrial processes, particularly the development of biopharmaceuticals and a section on the use of MALDI-MS to monitor products of chemical synthesis of carbohydrates. Large carbohydrate-protein complexes and glycodendrimers are highlighted in this final section.

Abstract
Are the liquid crystalline properties of the materials of living systems important in biological structures, functions, diseases and treatments? There is a growing consciousness that the observed lyotropic, and often thermotropic liquid crystallinity, of many biological materials that possess key biological functionality might be more than curious coincidence. Rather, as the survival of living systems depends on the flexibility and reformability of structures, it seems more likely that it is the combination of softness and structure of the liquid-crystalline state that determines the functionality of biological materials. The richest sources of liquid crystals derived from living systems are found in cell membranes, of these glycolipids are a particularly important class of components. In this critical review, we will examine the relationship between chemical structure and the self-assembling and self-organising properties of glycolipids that ultimately lead to mesophase formation.
