Abstract
Separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ is one of the most challenging problems in the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle. In the present work, we exploited the cooperative effect of the opposite selectivity of hydrophobic branched DGA derivatives and hydrophobic N-donor heterocyclic ligands taken in two different phases to achieve improved separation behavior. A systematic study was performed using a series of DGA derivatives to understand the effect and the position of branching in the alkyl chains on the separation behavior of Am3+ and Cm3+. A separation factor (S.F.) value as high as 10 for Cm3+ over Am3+ was obtained in the case of TiBDGA (N,N,N',N'-tetra-iso-butyl diglycolamide) using SO3PhBTPhen ((phenanthroline-2,9-diyl)-1,2,4-triazine-5,5,6,6-tetrayltetrabenzenesulfonic acid) as the aqueous complexant, which is the highest reported value so far for the ligand-based separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ without involving any oxidation or reduction step. The high selectivity favoring Cm3+ ion extraction in the case of this DGA derivative is also explained with the help of computational studies.

Abstract
Separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ is one of the most challenging yet unavoidable steps in the back end of the nuclear cycle. Various ligands evaluated for Am/Cm separation have their own merits and demerits, and not a single ligand has been uniquely proposed for this purpose. In the present work, we evaluated N,N,N',N'-tetra-n-octyldiglycolamide (TODGA) vis-à-vis N,N,N',N'-tetra-2-ethylhexyldiglycolamide (T2EHDGA) in combination with a hydrophilic 2,6-bis(1,2,4-triazinyl)pyridine (SO3PhBTP) derivative in the aqueous phase for the separation of Am3+ and Cm3+ from nitric acid medium. The results showed that marginal selectivity for Am3+ over Cm3+ was observed with T2EHDGA in the presence of SO3PhBTP, which was attributed to the difference in the entropy change for their extraction from both the temperature-dependent liquid-liquid extraction and computational studies.

Abstract
Two isomeric diglycolamide (DGA) extractants, N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctyl diglycolamide (LI) and N,N-dimethyl-N',N'-dioctyl diglycolamide (LII), were used to perform a comparative study on the extraction performances towards several lanthanides by extraction experiments and theoretical calculations. The experimental results show that both LI and LII show a positive sequence on the extraction of lanthanides, and LI exhibits the higher complex ability with these lanthanides than LII, except for La and Ce. Slope analysis shows that 1:2 or 1:3 complexes are formed between the two ligands and the metal ions. The geometrical structures of the complexes were optimized in the gas phase by density functional theory (DFT) on the basis of complex compositions. The results of bond lengths, MBOs and topological analysis indicated that the electrostatic interaction between metal ions and two amide O atoms in the LII ligand is not as homogeneous as in LI, and this inhomogeneity is likely to be related to the poor extraction performance of LII.

Abstract
A novel asymmetric diglycolamide N,N-dimethyl-N′,N′-dioctyl diglycolamide (LII) was synthesized. The Nd(iii) extraction behavior from HNO3 and loading capability of the solution of LII in 40/60 (v/v)% n-octanol/kerosene were studied. Analyses by the slope method, ESI-MS, and FT-IR indicated that, similar to the previously studied isomer ligand N,N′-dimethyl-N,N′-dioctyl diglycolamide (LI), 1 : 3 Nd(iii)/LII complexes formed. Under the same experimental conditions, the distribution ratio and limiting organic concentration of LII towards Nd(iii) were smaller than those of LI, but the critical aqueous concentration of LII was larger, which implies that LII exhibited poorer extraction and loading capabilities towards Nd(iii) than LI, and LII has a tendency to be less likely to form the third phase. The quasi-relativistic density functional theory (DFT) calculation was performed to provide some explanations for the differences in their extraction behaviors. The electrostatic potential of the ligands indicated that the electron-donating ability of the amide O atoms in LII displayed certain differences compared with LI. This inhomogeneity in LII affected the interaction between LII and Nd(iii), as supported by QTAIM and bonding nature analysis, and it seemed to reflect in the extraction performance towards Nd(iii). The inhomogeneous interactions of M–Oamide in the LII ligand result in differences between the metal-ion extraction performances of two isomeric ligands.![]()

Abstract
Selectivity between Am3+ and Cm3+ was investigated after their aqueous complexation with three structurally tailored hydrophilic bis-(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl) ligands followed by their extraction with N,N,N'N'-tetraoctyl diglycolamide (TODGA) dissolved in an ionic liquid (C4mim·Tf2N). The three hydrophilic ligands used were SO3PhBTP, SO3PhBTBP, and SO3PhBTPhen. It was evident from the solvent extraction studies that SO3PhBTP formed a stronger complex with Cm3+ than with Am3+, but SO3PhBTPhen showed better complexation ability for Am3+ than for Cm3+, and SO3PhBTBP showed no selectivity for the two actinide ions. DFT calculations indicated that the coordinating 'N' atoms in BTP were more co-planar in the complex and this co-planarity was higher in the Cm3+ complex as compared to that in Am3+. In the case of BTBP and BTPhen ligands, on the other hand, the co-planarity was more pronounced in the Am3+ complexes. Mayer's bond order calculations of M-N bonds in the complexes also indicated a reversal of the complexation ability of the BTP and BTPhen ligands for Am3+ and Cm3+. Calculations of the complexation energies further supported the higher selectivity of the BTP ligand for Am3+ by -52.0 kJ mol-1, and better selectivity of the BTPhen ligand for Cm3+ by -24.7 kJ mol-1.

Abstract
The design and development of a water-soluble heterocyclic ligand are believed to be an alternative way for improving the separation efficiency of actinides from lanthanides. Herein, we designed and synthesized a novel hydrophilic multidentate ligand: disulfonated N,N'-diphenyl-2,9-diamide-1,10-phenanthroline (DS-Ph-DAPhen) with soft and hard donor atoms, as a masking agent in aqueous solutions for Am(III) separation. The combination of N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide in kerosene and DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous phases could separate Am(III) from Eu(III) across a range of nitric acid concentrations with very high selectivity. The coordination behaviors of Eu(III) with DS-Ph-DAPhen in aqueous solutions were studied by UV-vis titration, electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. The results indicated that Eu(III) ions could form both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand in aqueous solution. Density functional theory calculation suggests that there are more covalent characters for Am-N bonds than that for Eu-N bonds in the complexes, which supports the better selectivity of the DS-Ph-DAPhen ligand toward Am(III) over Eu(III). This work demonstrates a feasible alternative approach to separating trivalent actinides from lanthanides with high selectivity.

Abstract
The complexation and selectivity of N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)-diglycolamic acid (HDEHDGA/kerosene, HA) toward the light lanthanides, La(III), Ce(III), Pr(III), and Nd(III), are presented for the extraction from chloride media. In the low pH region (pH 1.8-2.8), the obtained data reveal that the extraction of Ln(III) is governed by cation-exchange mechanism and is driven by the negative change in enthalpy. The results from the slope analysis method suggest the formation of LnA3·(HA)1or2 in the extraction process. As major extracted species with a core of LnA3 in the first coordination sphere, LnA3 might connect with one or two additional HA molecules in the second coordination sphere by hydrogen bonding. The LnA3 core might share similar coordination geometry to those of 1:3 Ln(III) complexes (LnA'3) with water-soluble N,N-dimethyl-diglycolamic acid (HDMDGA, HA') formed in aqueous solutions or in solid-state compounds. The correlation between the extraction with HDEHDGA (HA) as an extractant and the complexation with HDMDGA (HA') as a chelator has been explored by interpreting the separation factors for HA with the difference in the stability constants for HA'. Consequently, the ratios of the stability constants of the corresponding 1:3 complexes (LnA'3) with HDMDGA could be reasonably translated to the separation factors (SFs) with HDEHDGA, providing a valuable approach for understanding the origin of the extraction/separation mechanism. By comparing the extraction selectivity of HDEHDGA with that of the currently deployed extractants in the industry such as P204, P507, and Cyanex 272, HDEHDGA offers outstanding selectivity with considerable SFs (SFCe/La = 6.68, SFPr/Ce = 2.79, and SFNd/Pr = 2.65) for light Ln(III) pairs under conditions of low acid concentrations.
