Midwife gender proclivity: Differential effects of expectant mothers' demographic factors in Zimbabwe

A survey of 300 expectant mothers, in their third trimester, was conducted in Bindura district of Zimbabwe. The causal study was done over a period of 6 months with the intention of determining the differential effects of various demographic factors of expectant mothers on midwife gender preferences. Data was collected using a short questionnaire on demographic factors and expectant mothers' preferences of male or female midwives. A binary logistics regression and odds ratios were used to analyse data. Our results revealed that specific demographics show preferences regarding the gender of midwives. Older women (aged 40 and above), who are married, having their first child, members of the African religion, and with less formal education, tend to prefer midwives of the same gender. Younger women (aged 18-39), those with prior pregnancy experience, Christians, and urban residents, generally were indifferent to midwife gender. Implications of the study were proffered.

Topics Included in Health Literacy Studies in Asia: A Systematic Review

The study aimed to review general and specific health literacy studies in different countries in Asia to understand the progress of health literacy researches in the region. English-published studies with quantitative measurements of health literacy were collected through a systematic search in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and Web of Science, without publication dates limitation. A total of 156 articles on general health literacy, oral, mental, disease-specific health literacy, and eHealth literacy were collected. General health literacy was the most covered topic in 89 articles, followed by eHealth Literacy. Health literacy studies have been conducted in 16 countries and have been increasingly concerned in most of the countries in Asia. China had the largest number of articles, followed by Taiwan. Four studies had participants from more than one country. Education, age, health status, incomes, and living/residential area were significantly associated with health literacy levels in 156 studies, with the prevalence of 55.8%, 28.2%, 20.5%, 17.9%, and 10.9%, respectively. Lower health literacy was related to poorer health outcomes or lower quality of life in 71 studies.

Assessment of the oral health literacy and oral health behaviors among nurses in China: a cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

Oral health is important for general health; nurses are expected to possess good oral health awareness and work together for public oral health promotion. The purpose of this study is to investigate oral health literacy (OHL)and oral health behaviors of nurses, and explore the association between oral health literacy with demographic variables and oral health behaviors.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study in a tertiary hospital was conducted using a short-form Health Literacy in Dentistry-14 (HeLD-14) and a 16-items oral health behaviors questionnaire. Information about the subjects' demographic details including age, gender, place of residence, marital status, marital status, education level, monthly household income, working experience, etc. were collected. Independent sample t- test, One- way ANOVA, and multivariable regression were used to identify the association of oral health literacy with demographic variables and oral health behaviors.

RESULTS

A total number of 317 nursing nurses participated in the survey, with a mean OHL score of 36.72, SD10.531, 21.8% were categorized as good, 34.1% medium and 44.2% poor oral health literacy; monthly household income, self-rated oral health, brushing time, use of fluoride toothpaste, and regular oral examination were signficantly associated with OHL scores.

CONCLUSION

The overall oral health literacy of the nurse population is at a moderate to low level. These findings may help to map and design an oral health education intervention to improve oral health literacy amongst nurses, especially nurses with low monthly household income and poor self-assessed oral health status. Nursing administrators and nursing educators should pay more attention to the oral health status of the nurse population.
