Supportive care needs after surgery in patients with breast cancer

PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine supportive care needs and related factors after surgery in patients with breast cancer.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted with 98 breast cancer patients in a Training and Research Hospital in Istanbul between September 2022 and November 2023. The Personal Information Form and the Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form Turkish version were used to collect data. One-way variance analysis, post hoc (Tukey, LSD), and t-test were used to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The total scale mean score for women who underwent surgery for breast cancer in the study was 83.95 22.97. Statistically significantly higher total scale scores were observed in younger women and those who received chemotherapy and radiotherapy than in others. The mean physical and daily living subscale scores of those who received chemotherapy and radiotherapy were higher than those who did not (p < .05). The psychology subscale mean scores of those who were young and unemployed were higher than the others (p < .05). The mean sexuality scores of those who were young, those with high education levels, and those who received chemotherapy were higher than the other groups (p < .05). Age factor affects SCN scores in women with breast cancer.

CONCLUSION

Supportive care needs are higher among women with breast cancer who are younger and receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The physical needs of those who receive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the psychological needs of those who are younger and unemployed, and the need for support regarding sexuality were greater among those who are younger and with higher education. Nurses should be aware of the specific needs of these disadvantaged groups and provide individualized holistic care.

Embodying loving kindness: Examining self-compassionate writing tasks and body satisfaction among transgender and non-binary people

Using an experimental posttest-only control group design, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-compassionate writing exercises on transgender and non-binary participants' body satisfaction, gender identity pride, and internalized transphobia. A total of 238 transgender people participated in this study (Mage = 28.27, SD = 8.12). Participants were randomly assigned to a self-compassionate writing task focusing on their gender identity, a self-compassionate writing task focusing on their body image as a transgender person (i.e., gendered body image), and a control condition, which required them to write about a neutral day in their lives. Results demonstrated that those in the gendered body image self-compassionate condition reported higher state-level effects of body satisfaction following the intervention than those in the control condition. No significant effects were observed for condition on state-level gender identity pride or internalized transphobia. Results also demonstrated that non-binary participants reported higher levels of gender identity pride than trans femme participants. Exploratory post-hoc analyses revealed that gender identity pride moderated the effect of condition on body satisfaction. Compared to those in the control condition, participants in the gendered body self-compassionate condition with moderate and high levels of gender identity pride reported higher levels of body satisfaction. Results demonstrate potential beneficial effects of brief self-compassionate writing exercises on transgender peoples' body satisfaction.

Virtual reality rehabilitation in patients affected by multiple sclerosis: Impact on quality of life and sexual functions

BACKGROUND

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can present several neurological symptoms with a progression that often leads to loss of cognitive and physical abilities. Sexual dysfunctions are frequent, although underestimated, MS symptoms significantly affecting the quality of life of these patients. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of VR rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life in individuals with MS. The secondary objective aimed to investigate whether the improvement in quality of life would also lead to enhanced sexual satisfaction and sexual function.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Patients diagnosed with relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive MS and attending from November 2018 to March 2020 the Rehabilitation Laboratory of IRCCS Neurolesi "Bonino Pulejo" in Messina, Italy were enrolled in this study. All patients were randomized into either the control group (CG: 35 patients) that received traditional cognitive rehabilitation (CR) or the experimental group (EG: 35) undergoing VR.

RESULTS

The EG showed substantial improvements in various aspects of Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life (MSQOL) between T0 and T1. Sexual function significantly improved, along with sexual satisfaction. Conversely, the CG achieved significant changes only in overall quality of life. Pearson's correlations highlighted the positive associations between sexual function and satisfaction, as well as with physical and mental well-being, underscoring the importance of improving sexual function as a marker of overall health.

DISCUSSION

This study is meant as exploratory as it addresses a fundamental yet overlooked aspect of rehabilitation, i.e., sexual function and sexual satisfaction, which could potentially be enhanced through rehabilitation in a VR environment. Registration DOI number: DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/NB4MJ.
