Effects of gender and motivations on perceptions of nonmedical use of prescription stimulants

Assessing motivations and gender as factors in college students' views of nonmedical prescription stimulant use

Introduction: Two prominent motivation categories of college student nonmedical prescription stimulant use (NMUPS) are for academic and recreational purposes. However, little research focuses on these motivations' association with college students' NMUPS views. Further, limited research assesses if user gender influences views. Methods: The current online scenario study implemented a 2 × 2 factorial design assessing 148 college undergraduates' (75% females; M_age = 19.18; SD_age = 1.30) NMUPS views based on user motivation and gender. Participants reported their drug use stigmatization, prescription stimulant expectancies (ie, anticipated drug use beliefs and outcomes), and personal substance use. Results and Discussion: Results showed that user gender did not influence participants' NMUPS views; however, participants viewed academic use less negatively compared to recreational use, thus highlighting the need to educate students on the negative consequences of NMUPS, even when use is for academically related tasks. Furthermore, exploratory analyses showed drug use stigmatization and prescription stimulant expectancies predicted participant NMUPS views.Supplemental data for this article can be accessed online at https://doi.org/10.1080/07448481.2021.1942005.

Descriptive, observational study of pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical arrests, use, and overdoses in Maine

OBJECTIVES

The Maine Diversion Alert Program grants healthcare providers access to law enforcement data on drug charges. The objectives of this report were to analyse variations in drug charges by demographics and examine recent trends in arrests, prescriptions of controlled substances and overdoses.

DESIGN

Observational.

SETTING

Arrests, controlled prescription medication distribution and overdoses in Maine.

PARTICIPANTS

Drug arrestees (n=1272) and decedents (n=2432).

PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURES

Arrestees were analysed by sex and age. Substances involved in arrests were reported by schedule (I-V or non-controlled prescription) and into opioids, stimulants or other classes. Controlled substances reported to the Drug Enforcement Administration (2007-2017) were evaluated. Drug-induced deaths (2007-2017) reported to the medical examiner were examined by the substance(s) identified.

RESULTS

Males were more commonly arrested for stimulants and schedule II substances. More than two-thirds of arrests involved individuals under the age of 40. Individuals age >60 were elevated for oxycodone arrests. Over three-fifths (63.38%) of arrests involved schedule II-IV substances. Opioids accounted for almost half (44.6%) of arrests followed by stimulants (32.5%) and sedatives (9.1%). Arrests involving buprenorphine exceeded those for oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, tramadol and morphine, combined. Prescriptions for hydrocodone (-56.0%) and oxycodone (-46.9%) declined while buprenorphine increased (+58.1%) between 2012 and 2017. Deaths from 2007 to 2017 tripled. Acetylfentanyl and furanylfentanyl were the most common fentanyl analogues identified.

CONCLUSIONS

Although the overall profile of those arrested for drug crimes in 2017 involve males, age <40 and heroin, exceptions (oxycodone for older adults) were observed. Most prescription opioids are decreasing while deaths involving opioids continue to increase in Maine.

Illicit Use of Prescription Stimulants: Gender Differences in Perceptions of Risk

Background: Little research exists on gender differences regarding the relationship between illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) and perceptions of risk of illicit use. Risk perception is a common target for both prevention and intervention programs. Objectives: To measure gender differences in prevalence rates of illicit use and perceptions of legal, health, and social risks of illicit use. Method: Data from undergraduate students at a large, southeastern university (N = 1,714) were examined for gender differences in prevalence of illicit use and related risk perceptions. Results: More men engaged in illicit use than women (26.2% vs. 18.7%). Overall, men perceived lower legal, health, and social risks related to illicit use. Further, illicit users also perceived lower legal, health, and social risks. Nonusing men perceived lower legal and health risks than nonusing women, but similar levels of social risks. Within the subgroup of illicit users, men perceived lower health risks than women, but similar levels of legal and social risk. Conclusions/Importance: There were significant gender differences in IUPS and risk perception, with particular importance of lack of social risk perceived for all groups and lower health risk perception for men who had engaged in IUPS. It is unclear if the lower risk perceptions are present prior to or after illicit use begins and whether risk perceptions affect the development, maintenance, or termination of illicit use behaviors. Future research is needed to clarify these relationships and to evaluate whether increasing risk perceptions is a viable target for prevention or intervention efforts.
