Parents' religious coping styles in the first year after their child's cystic fibrosis diagnosis

"In God We Trust": An Exploratory Study of the Associations Between Religiosity and the Caregiving Experiences of Parents of Children with Rare Diseases in Poland

Most children with a rare disease are cared for by their family members but parenting such a child is extremely demanding due to the complexity and severity of symptoms, with serious physical, emotional, social, and financial consequences for caregivers. Although religion may serve as a positive coping strategy, little is known about its role in helping caregivers manage the stress related to the burden of caregiving in Poland. Therefore, we surveyed 925 Polish family caregivers of children with rare diseases to understand the association between caregivers' religiosity and their caring experiences. The findings suggest that parents' religiosity is associated with a more positive caregiving experience, perceived quality of life, and experienced caregiving burden. While religious caregivers reported experiencing less distressing emotions and stressed the encouraging impact of their child's disease on their life more often, non-religious caregivers experienced role captivity and role overload more frequently. Since religion may serve as a source of strength and a protecting factor against mental health problems and the burden of caregiving, healthcare professionals should be aware of the importance of religious and spiritual care, and caregivers' religiosity should be considered an integral part of a holistic approach.

The Relationship Between Psychological Distress and Religious Practices and Coping in Malaysian Parents of Children with Thalassemia

STUDY PURPOSE

This study was conducted to examine the relationship between religious practice, religious coping methods and psychological distress among parents caring for children with transfusion-dependent thalassemia.

DESIGN AND METHODS

This is a cross-sectional survey. Data were collected on 162 parents of children diagnosed with thalassemia aged 12 years and younger in thalassemia day care centers of three public hospitals in Sabah, Malaysia. Data were collected using questionnaires, including General Health Questionaire-12 (GHQ-12), Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) and Brief RCOPE.

RESULTS

Forty-two percent of parents had psychological distress with GHQ score ≥ 3 (mean score of 2.85 ± 3.17). Ninety-five percent of parents used positive religious coping methods (mean P-COPE score 22.35 ± 2.33) more than negative religious coping methods (mean N-COPE score was 12.19 ± 5.23). They used Organized Religious Activities (mean ORA score of 4.20 ± 1.27), and Non-Organized Religious Activities (NORA, the mean was 4.17 ± 1.37). Positive and negative religious coping methods were significantly related to parents' psychological distress (P-COPE and GHQ-12 scores (r_s (df) = 0.19, p < .05; N-COPE and GHQ-12 scores r_s (df) = 0.38, p < .001)).

CONCLUSION

The study findings showed the parents experienced psychological distress. They used positive religious coping methods more than negative religious coping methods. Psychological distress was significantly related to organized religious activities, non-organized religious activities and positive and negative religious coping methods.

PRACTICE IMPLICATION

The study findings facilitate understanding of psychological distress and how parents use religious coping strategies to deal with the stress caring for their child.

Overcoming psychosocial challenges in cystic fibrosis: Promoting resilience

Individuals living with cystic fibrosis (CF), and their families, have experienced significant improvements in treatment and related research that have enhanced outcomes and survival. Despite such advancement, the burden of living with CF still exists. Many psychosocial stressors and risk factors are associated with the impact of CF. The identification and treatment of such risk factors are discussed throughout this review, with an emphasis on strategies to address psychosocial risk and the importance of promoting resiliency in those touched by CF.

A consensual qualitative research analysis of the experience of inmate hospice caregivers: Posttraumatic growth while incarcerated

A growing number of correctional facilities train inmates to provide end-of-life care for dying inmates. This study explores the phenomenological perspective of inmate-caregivers participating in an inmate-facilitated hospice program (IFHP) with regard to meaning and purpose in life, attitudes on death and dying, and perceived personal impact of participation. Twenty-two inmate-caregivers were interviewed at a maximum-security state correctional facility in the United States. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research Methodology. Results suggest that participating in an IFHP may facilitate personal growth and transformation that mirrors the tenets of posttraumatic growth.

Increased congregational support for parents of children with cystic fibrosis

Positive health outcomes are related to adults' religious congregational participation. For parents of children with chronic disease, structured daily care routines and/or strict infection control precautions may limit participation. For this exploratory study, we examined the relationship between congregational support and religious coping by parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) compared to parents for whom child health issues were not significant stressors. CF parents reported higher levels of emotional support from congregation members and use of religious coping. Within-group differences were found for CF parents by denominational affiliation. Congregational support for parents dealing with child chronic disease is important.

Testing the Validity of a Protocol to Screen for Spiritual Struggle among Parents of Children with Cystic Fibrosis

Spirituality is important to many Americans and is used to cope with adverse events. Some forms of spiritual coping are maladaptive or troubling, and are known as negative spiritual coping or spiritual struggle. These forms of spirituality are often associated with poorer physical and mental health outcomes. Thus, in clinical contexts there is a need to identify persons who may be experiencing spiritual struggle and, if indicated, offer spiritual care that may address that struggle. Twenty-two parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF) completed semi-structured interviews and questionnaires exploring spirituality's role in their child's illness. Interviews included oral administration of a protocol to screen for spiritual struggle. The parents also completed the negative religious coping subscale of the Brief RCOPE, a commonly used measure of spiritual struggle. Descriptive statistics were obtained. The screening protocol identified 18% of the parents as potentially having spiritual struggle. Thirty-two percent had negative religious coping scores suggestive of spiritual struggle. Comparison of results with both measures found the screening protocol had good specificity (87%) but relatively low sensitivity (29%). Using either measure, indications of spiritual struggle were associated with higher levels of depressive symptoms. The screener's administration was acceptable and feasible. The low sensitivity may be due in part to differences between the focus of the screener and that of the negative religious coping subscale, which focuses on struggle with the Divine. Further work is needed to establish the best approach to screening for spiritual struggle.
