Review of material properties of (Mo/W)Se2-layered compound semiconductors useful for photoelectrochemical solar cells

Fabrication of 2D-MoSe2 incorporated NiO Nanorods modified electrode for selective detection of glucose in serum samples

Layered molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) nanosheets were formed by the weak Van der Waals forces of attraction between Se and Mo atoms. MoSe2 has a larger space between the adjacent layers and smaller band gaps in the range of 0.85 to ~ 1.6 eV. In this study, MoSe2 nanosheets decorated nickel oxide (NiO) nanorods have been synthesized by hydrothermal method using sodium molybdate and selenium metal powder. NiO/MoSe2 composite formation was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction analysis. In addition, the presence of MoSe2 nanosheets on NiO nanorods were confirmed by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Nyquist plots of NiO/MoSe2 coated glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was indicated that it had lower charge transfer resistance compared to NiO/GCE and MoSe2/GCE. Furthermore, as-prepared NiO/MoSe2/GCE was used to detect glucose in alkaline solution by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry techniques. The NiO/MoSe2/GCE was exhibited a linear response for the oxidation of glucose from 50 µM to 15.5 mM (R2 = 0.9842) at 0.5 V by amperometry. The sensor response time and the limit of detection were found to be 2 s and 0.6 µM for glucose. Moreover, selectivity of the NiO/MoSe2 sensor was tested in the presence of common interferent molecules such as hydrogen peroxide, fructose, lactose, ascorbic acid, uric acid, and dopamine. It was found that NiO/MoSe2/GCE did not respond to these interfering biomolecules. In addition, NiO/MoSe2/GCE had shown high stability, reproducibility and repeatability. Finally, the practical application of the sensor was demonstrated by detecting glucose in human blood serum with the acceptable recovery.

Efficient hydrogen production at a rationally designed MoSe2@Co3O4 p-n heterojunction

During the past several years, transition metal compounds have shown high activity in the field of photocatalysis. Therefore, the MoSe₂@Co₃O₄ with excellent photocatalytic properties through simple hydrothermal and physical mixing methods was prepared. This composite material was composed of n-type semiconductor MoSe₂ and p-type semiconductor Co₃O₄. After optimizing the loading of Co₃O₄, the optimal hydrogen production can reached 7029.2 μmol g^-1h^-1, which was 2.34 times that of single MoSe₂. In addition, some characterization methods were used to explore the hydrogen production performance of the composite catalyst under EY sensitized conditions. Among them, the UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra suggests that MoSe₂@Co₃O₄ exhibits stronger visible light absorption performance than the single material. Fluorescence performance and photoelectrochemical characterization experiments further prove that, the special structure formed by MoSe₂ and Co₃O₄ and the existence of p-n heterojunction effectively accelerate the separation and transfer of carriers meanwhile inhibit the recombination probability of electron-hole pairs. Combined with other characterizations such as XRD, XPS, SEM and BET, the possible hydrogen production mechanism was proposed.

C Fibers@WSe2 Nanoplates Core-Shell Composite: Highly Efficient Solar-Driven Photocatalyst

Recently, WSe₂ as a typical transition metal dichalcogenide compound has attracted extensive attention due to its potential applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, WSe₂ alone cannot be directly used as a photocatalyst due to its inferior performance possibly caused by the strong recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. Here a novel C fibers@WSe₂ nanoplates core-shell composite (NPCSC) was successfully synthesized via facile, one-step thermal evaporation, in which numerous WSe₂ thin nanoplates were in situ, densely and even vertically grown on the surface of the C fibers. Such composite presents highly solar-driven photocatalytic activity and stability for the degradation of various organic aqueous dyes including methylene blue and rhodamine B, and highly harmful gases like toluene, showing the great potential for environmental remediation by degrading toxic industrial chemicals using sunlight. Under simulated sunlight irradiation, comparing with commercially available WSe₂ powder, the as-synthesized C fibers@WSe₂ NPCSC presents significantly enhanced reaction rate constants by a factor of approximately 15, 9, and 3 for the degradation of aqueous methylene blue, aqueous rhodamine B, and gaseous toluene, respectively, due to the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs promoted by the rapid transfer of photogenerated electrons through C fibers. Moreover, this one-step thermal evaporation is an easy-handling, environmentally friendly, and low-cost synthesis method, which is suitable for large-scale production.

Colloidal 2D nanosheets of MoS2 and other transition metal dichalcogenides through liquid-phase exfoliation

This review focuses on the exfoliation of transition metal dichalcogenides MQ₂ (TMD, M=Mo, W, etc., Q=S, Se, Te) in liquid media, leading to the formation of 2D nanosheets dispersed in colloids. Nowadays, colloidal dispersions of MoS₂, MoSe₂, WS₂ and other related materials are considered for a wide range of applications, including electronic and optoelectronic devices, energy storage and conversion, sensors for gases, catalysts and catalyst supports, biomedicine, etc. We address various methods developed so far for transferring these materials from bulk to nanoscale thickness, and discuss their stabilization and factors influencing it. Long-time known exfoliation through Li intercalation has received renewed attention in recent years, and is recognized as a method yielding highest dispersed concentrations of single-layer MoS₂ and related materials. Latest trends in the intercalation/exfoliation approach include electrochemical lithium intercalation, experimenting with various intercalating agents, multi-step intercalation, etc. On the other hand, direct sonication in solvents is a much simpler technique that allows one to avoid dangerous reagents, long reaction times and purifying steps. The influence of the solvent characteristics on the colloid formation was closely investigated in numerous recent studies. Moreover, it is being recognized that, besides solvent properties, sonication parameters and solvent transformations may affect the process in a crucial way. The latest data on the interaction of MoS₂ with solvents evidence that not only solution thermodynamics should be employed to understand the formation and stabilization of such colloids, but also general and organic chemistry. It appears that due to the sonolysis of the solvents and cutting of the MoS₂ layers in various directions, the reactive edges of the colloidal nanosheets may bear various functionalities, which participate in their stabilization in the colloidal state. In most cases, direct exfoliation of MQ₂ into colloidal nanosheets is conducted in organic solvents, while a small amount of works report low-concentrated colloids in pure water. To improve the dispersion abilities of transition metal dichalcogenides in water, various stabilizers are often introduced into the reaction media, and their interactions with nanosheets play an important role in the stabilization of the dispersions. Surfactants, polymers and biomolecules usually interact with transition metal dichalcogenide nanosheets through non-covalent mechanisms, similarly to the cases of graphene and carbon nanotubes. Finally, we survey covalent chemical modification of colloidal MQ₂ nanosheets, a special and different approach, consisting in the functionalization of MQ₂ surfaces with help of thiol chemistry, interaction with electrophiles, or formation of inorganic coordination complexes. The intentional design of surface chemistry of the nanosheets is a very promising way to control their solubility, compatibility with other moieties and incorporation into hybrid structures. Although the scope of the present review is limited to transition metal dichalcogenides, the dispersion in colloids of other chalcogenides (such as NbS₃, VS₄, Mo₂S₃, etc.) in many ways follows similar trends. We conclude the review by discussing current challenges in the area of exfoliation of MoS₂ and its related materials.

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide alloys: preparation, characterization and applications

Engineering electronic structure of atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) materials is of great importance to their potential applications. In comparison to numerous other approaches, such as strain and chemical functionization, alloying can continuously tune the band gaps in a wide energy range. Atomically thin 2D alloys have been prepared and studied recently due to their potential use in electronic and optoelectronic applications. In this review, we first summarize the preparation methods of 2D alloys (mainly on transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) monolayer alloys), including mechanical exfoliation, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and chalcogen exchange. Then, atomic-resolution imaging, Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy characterization of 2D alloys are reviewed, in which band gap tuning is discussed in detail based on the PL experiments and theoretical calculations. Finally, applications of 2D alloys in field-effect transistors (FETs), photocurrent generation and hydrogen evolution catalysis are reviewed.

Thermal Oxidation of WSe2 Nanosheets Adhered on SiO2/Si Substrates

Because of the drastically different intralayer versus interlayer bonding strengths, the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials are highly anisotropic between the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. The structural anisotropy may also play a role in chemical reactions, such as oxidation, reduction, and etching. Here, the composition, structure, and electrical properties of mechanically exfoliated WSe2 nanosheets on SiO2/Si substrates were studied as a function of the extent of thermal oxidation. A major component of the oxidation, as indicated from optical and Raman data, starts from the nanosheet edges and propagates laterally toward the center. Partial oxidation also occurs in certain areas at the surface of the flakes, which are shown to be highly conductive by microwave impedance microscopy. Using secondary ion mass spectroscopy, we also observed extensive oxidation at the WSe2-SiO2 interface. The combination of multiple microcopy methods can thus provide vital information on the spatial evolution of chemical reactions on 2D materials and the nanoscale electrical properties of the reaction products.
