A Study of the Stability of Emulsion with Mixed Surfactants using Electrolytic Conductivity

Effect of Electrolytes on Solution and Interfacial Behaviors of Double Chain Cationic-Nonionic Surfactant Mixtures for Hydrophobic Surface Wetting and Oil/Water Emulsion Stability Applications

The solution behaviors of the binary mixture of double chain cationic surfactant didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB) with nonionic surfactants of varied head groups, EO-9 and EO-40, in the presence and absence of electrolytes were studied and found nonideal behavior. The different physicochemical properties such as Gibb's surface excess (Γ), minimum area per molecule (A_min), and interaction parameters at bulk (β^M) and interface (β^σ) were calculated. In the presence of nonionic surfactants, lowering of CMC, CVC, and surface tension at these two concentrations of DDAB were observed. The β^M and β^σ values indicate strong interaction between DDAB and EO-40 mixed system. Further, addition of electrolytes to the mixed systems show increased interaction and change of physicochemical properties because of the combination of electrical and salting out effects.

Effect of long-chain alcohols on SDS partitioning to the oil/water interface of emulsions and on droplet size

The effect of long-chain alcohols (C(n)OH for n=8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18) on the partitioning of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to the oil/water interface in oil-in-water macroemulsions was investigated and related to emulsion droplet size and total interfacial area (TIA) contributed by SDS. Alcohols were solubilized in hexadecane and emulsified in SDS solutions. Ultrafiltration was carried out in centrifuge tubes having nanoporous filters with a 30,000 molecular weight cutoff (MWCO), so that emulsion droplets would not pass through, and only SDS that is in the bulk water phase as monomers or micelles (i.e., not at the interface) could pass through. The results showed a chain-length compatibility effect; the maximum amount of SDS partitioned to the interface when dodecanol (C(12)OH) was added to the oil. The results also showed that partitioning of SDS is affected only when dodecanol is added. All other alcohols had no significant influence on SDS partitioning to the oil/water interface. Droplet size measurements revealed a minimum in droplet size for emulsions with added C(12)OH. In order to explain the results, it was proposed that the penetration of alcohol molecules into the interfacial film occur at the interface, resulting in more cohesive molecular packing at the interface, and the minimum droplet size and maximum partitioning of SDS at the oil/water interface for C(12)OH/SDS emulsion system. The TIA provided by the SDS molecules, as determined from our ultrafiltration method, was two orders of magnitude greater than that calculated from the droplet size measured by light scattering. Possible explanations for this disparity are discussed.

Ternary systems of nonionic surfactant Brij 35, water and various simple alcohols: Structural investigations by small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering

Structural properties of ternary systems composed of nonionic surfactant dodecyl-poly(ethylene oxide-23) ether (C12E23, commercial name: Brij 35), water and various alcohols from ethanol to 1-decanol have been investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. All measurements were performed at the temperature 25 degrees C. SAXS experimental data were put on absolute scale using water as a secondary standard. The data of water-rich mixtures at low to moderate surfactant concentrations were evaluated using the generalized indirect Fourier transformation method (GIFT), which is based on the simultaneous determination of the intra- and inter-particle scattering contributions. In this way, the size and the shape of interacting scattering particles in real space could be deduced. The systems with a relatively low surfactant concentration (5 mass%) were studied most extensively. In these cases, the water-rich regions of the phase diagrams could be investigated into more detail, since in the alcohol-rich regions problems with the GIFT evaluation of the SAXS data were encountered. The presented results demonstrate the level of structural details that can be obtained on the basis of scattering methods and point out the specific stages of data evaluation and interpretation where one must be extremely precautious. As such they reveal the inner structuration of the complex ternary systems of our present interest. In parallel, they also indicate that the longer chain alcohols actually behave as real oil phases in the studied systems, as one might expect, and also confirm the well-known properties of different short to medium chain alcohols that act as co-solvents and/or co-surfactants in microemulsion systems depending on their chain length.
