Maximum speed of dissipation

We derive statistical-mechanical speed limits on dissipation from the classical, chaotic dynamics of many-particle systems. In one, the rate of irreversible entropy production in the environment is the maximum speed of a deterministic system out of equilibrium, S[over ¯]_{e}/k_{B}≥1/2Δt, and its inverse is the minimum time to execute the process, Δt≥k_{B}/2S[over ¯]_{e}. Starting with deterministic fluctuation theorems, we show there is a corresponding class of speed limits for physical observables measuring dissipation rates. For example, in many-particle systems interacting with a deterministic thermostat, there is a trade-off between the time to evolve between states and the heat flux, Q[over ¯]Δt≥k_{B}T/2. These bounds constrain the relationship between dissipation and time during nonstationary processes, including transient excursions from steady states.

Density matrix formulation of dynamical systems

Physical systems that are dissipating, mixing, and developing turbulence also irreversibly transport statistical density. However, predicting the evolution of density from atomic and molecular scale dynamics is challenging for nonsteady, open, and driven nonequilibrium processes. Here, we establish a theory to address this challenge for classical dynamical systems that is analogous to the density matrix formulation of quantum mechanics. We show that a classical density matrix is similar to the phase-space metric and evolves in time according to generalizations of Liouville's theorem and Liouville's equation for non-Hamiltonian systems. The traditional Liouvillian forms are recovered in the absence of dissipation or driving by imposing trace preservation or by considering Hamiltonian dynamics. Local measures of dynamical instability and chaos are embedded in classical commutators and anticommutators and directly related to Poisson brackets when the dynamics are Hamiltonian. Because the classical density matrix is built from the Lyapunov vectors that underlie classical chaos, it offers an alternative computationally tractable basis for the statistical mechanics of nonequilibrium processes that applies to systems that are driven, transient, dissipative, regular, and chaotic.

Conservative dynamics in a novel class of 3D generalized thermostatted systems

This paper reports a method to derive a novel class of 3D generalized thermostatted oscillators from a simple damped harmonic oscillator. Its detailed procedure is obtained through a mathematical derivation. Then, we propose an example system to show the effectiveness of the method. Furthermore, the numerical analysis is performed to investigate its rich conservative dynamics, including chaotic sea, hierarchical invariant tori, and the coexistence of chaotic seas and invariant tori with islands-around-islands hierarchy, even if there are three dissipative terms in the example system. To verify the existence of conservative chaos at the physical level, an analog circuit is presented to observe the existing conservative chaotic flows in National Instruments multisim. We finally provide two systems, which can produce conservative chaotic flows with more complicated topologies, and draw our conclusions.

Equilibrium distribution functions: connection with microscopic dynamics

Standard textbook derivations of the equilibrium distribution function rely on assumptions that may not satisfy all readers. Here, we present a straightforward approach to derive the equilibrium distribution function from the microscopic dynamics, and review how it can be used to obtain the expected expressions. In molecular dynamics simulations the equations of motion are often modified to simulate different ensembles or phenomena. We show that in some cases these equations will sample an equilibrium ensemble whereas in other cases they will not. For example, we find that for charged particles driven by a field, an equilibrium distribution is only possible when the system is confined. Furthermore, the approach correctly predicts that neither SLLOD shear flow dynamics nor constant temperature dynamics with a Berendsen thermostat sample any time-independent phase space distributions.

Stochastic sampling of the isothermal-isobaric ensemble: Phase diagram of crystalline solids from molecular dynamics simulation

A methodology to sample the isothermal-isobaric ensemble using Langevin dynamics is proposed, which combines novel features of geometric integrators for the equations of motion. By employing the Trotter expansion, the methodology generates a robust, symmetric, and accurate numerical algorithm. In order to show that the proposed method correctly samples the phase-space, simulations in the isotropic NPT ensemble were carried out for two analytical examples. Also this method lets us study a solid-solid phase transition by conducting a fully flexible-cell molecular dynamics simulation. Additionally, we present an efficient method to determine the Gibbs free energy in a wide interval of pressure along an isothermal path, which allows us to determine the transition pressure in a driven by pressure solid-solid phase transition. Our calculations show that the methodology is highly suitable for the study of the phase diagram of crystalline solids.

Entropy production and volume contraction in thermostated Hamiltonian dynamics

Patra et al. [Int. J. Bifurcat. Chaos 26, 1650089 (2016)IJBEE40218-127410.1142/S0218127416500899] recently showed that the time-averaged rates of entropy production and phase-space volume contraction are equal for several different molecular dynamics methods used to simulate nonequilibrium steady states in Hamiltonian systems with thermostated temperature gradients. This equality is a plausible statistical analog of the second law of thermodynamics. Here we show that those two rates are identically equal in a wide class of methods in which the thermostat variables z are determined by ordinary differential equations of motion (i.e., methods of the Nosé-Hoover or integral feedback control type). This class of methods is defined by three relatively innocuous restrictions which are typically satisfied in methods of this type.
